It's scary using a local....

I've have networked quite a bit with locals in my hometown... I actually helped 2 of them set up a pph site, proper tracking tools, and other small things for them... now I'm constantly hearing stories about their dealings...

It's scary out there. In the last couple weeks, I've heard of two (different from above) locals booking action yet can't pay there own debt. One was for $1k and debt is 30+ days old, says doesn't have the money. the other is for a measly $200 and doesn't have it to pay until he collects from someone else. This isn't the excuse he gave either, it's someone in the know that passed on the information.

Can't pay $200 but books.

Scary stuff using a local, just be careful out there guys.
Pay when you owe.. Win and good chance these guys can't pay.

You have to do your home work when using a local.I personally only used gents that have been around for a while and had good reps for paying off.Sounds like the guys you mention have short rolls,and think I,ll just start a book and make money,because no one wins.......What a ridiculous attitude.....Cant pay a $200.00 bet? Absurd.

A lot of them are just bad gamblers who happen to be sitting on the other side of the phone. They are not smart enough to just write, or write X amount and then move. If it weren't for the threat of the knock on the door, or battering ram through it, being a local book would be the easiest job in the world.

3 skills a local book needs:

1) Ability to size people up for authenticity/trustworthiness - A bettor needs that skill as well.
2) Check your opinion at the door.
3) Dealing to faces - Who do I give -10 to instead of 9.5, etc.
Locals still open between 6-6:30 Eastern. That hasn't changed in many years. What has changed? Since Billy shut off his walkie-talkie the Lines in Hoops never seem to move after 6PM anymore, unless Lebron comes out in a suit. That's why I'm typing here with neither eye on the screen.

think youre a little off of this assement...

#1 needs a network of gamblers
#2 needs the ability to collect
#3 need to have the bankroll to support
#4 needs accurate record keeping

pph shops are what make it so easy for anybody with a pulse to claim to be someone that can book your action. pph shops should do a better job policing their clientele for shot takers.

guess my point, is if I didn't know as much as I do about my current locals is that I much rather be posted up at EzStreet or Heritage or another trustworthy offshore place than play with a local I don't know much about

I dont play at locals just post up.. better for both ends of the transaction but you still should limit yourself to be careful of course

The better for both ends is that the side less likely to pay should be the one at risk. If the player is more reliable than the book the better is to play on credit. If the book is more reliable, than post up. In today's world I'm not sure the book is more reliable. Offshore and local.

I would never play with a local that I didn't trust 100%.

Have been dealing with with my local for 6-7 years and he has been around for 20+

I can bet 50$-3k a game and no matter what happens I know he will be waiting for me at the bar on Wednesday night with my envelope.
If I won 30k in a week I am 110% positive he would be there with my money. In all 100$ bills. Lol
