Jay Gruden inherits a Redskins team that went 3-13 last season.

The Washington Redskins hired former Bengals offensive coordinator Jay Gruden as head coach Thursday, FOX Sports 1 Insider Jay Glazer has confirmed.

Gruden interviewed with the team Wednesday and the two were reportedly closing in on a deal early Thursday, which has now been completed. The deal is for five years, Glazer reports.

The team will hold a news conference Thursday to introduce its new coach.

The Redskins endured a rocky season in 2013, finishing 3-13 after making the playoffs in the 2012. Washington opted to fire head coach Mike Shanahan once the season ended.

FOX Sports 1 Insider Mike Garafolo reports that early indications point to Redskins tight end coach Sean McVay will be Washington's offensive coordinator and Hue Jackson will replace Gruden as the Bengals' offensive coordinator.

Interesting...Let's see if a younger coach can get that massive RGIII ego under control and in the right direction...Lot of work to be done on that team. He needs at least 2 years IMO prob 3. Good coach though. I see Cincy taking a step back now offensively.

Im not surprised he is getting a shot. Will be interesting to see how he handles RG3.

I could see another Jeff ragging on Dwight w/Stan Van Gundy situation if RG3 continues his outspoken ways when things aren't going well.

Not excited about this pick, simply because I don't know anything about Jay Gruden. But at the same time that's probably a good thing. The skins continue trying the experienced old boring coaches. Really wanted Art Briles, but he is too loyal to Baylor. Think this will work out hopefully, get some freshness in to the team. The most excited part for me is Kyle Shanahan is no longer calling plays.

Based on his press conference you can tell he'll be putting his foot in his mouth on a weekly basis

3 year contract max.... Why would anyone invest in anyone for 5 years? Is he worth the it, I don't know anything about him but I 'm sure he's out celebrating tonight!

You wonder if Snyder is like Jerry Jones. If he takes the players side over the head coaches side on any issues, then it will never work.

I don't think they gave the game plan to Dalton. It was up to Gruden to let his QB know what color jerseys to throw it to.
