This week's hottest and coldest NBA bets

Each week, we look back on the NBA betting scene and give you the best - and worst - basketball bets, as well as some spots to keep an eye on with the upcoming schedule.

For the week of Jan. 27-Feb. 2

Hottest ATS - Phoenix Suns (4-0 SU, 4-0 ATS)

Not even a long-term injury to talented guard Eric Bledsoe has been able to slow down the Suns, who remain one of the best stories in the NBA so far this season. The Suns used a four-win week to vault past the Golden State Warriors and into second place in the Pacific Division, 3.5 games back of the first-place Los Angeles Clippers. Two of the covers were by one point or fewer, but a double-digit victory in Philadelphia and a surprising win in Indiana showed that the Suns' most recent hot streak is no fluke.

Coldest ATS - Cleveland Cavaliers (0-3 SU, 0-3 ATS)

Things are quickly going south for the Cavaliers, who looked like contenders for a playoff berth early in the season but are flaming out so far in January. Things reached a new low last week, when Cleveland lost home games against Phoenix and New Orleans before heading out on the road and getting beaten soundly by New York and Houston. Rumors persist that there is friction in the locker room, though franchise point guard Kyrie Irving quelled some of the scuttlebutt by insisting he'd like to remain in Cleveland - at least for now.

Best Over play - Atlanta Hawks (2-1 SU, 3-0 O/U)

Atlanta has consistently been one of the best Over plays in the Eastern Conference this season and last week saw a continuation of that trend. After opening the stretch with a heart-wrenching 111-109 defeat at the hands of the Oklahoma City Thunder, the Hawks regrouped to defeat Philadelphia 125-99 and topple Minnesota 120-113. The team has been relying on a balanced scoring attack, as 10 players scored at least seven points against the 76ers and eight reached the plateau against the Timberwolves.

Best Under play - Chicago Bulls (1-2 SU, 0-3 O/U)

Chicago has assumed its perch as the best Under play in the NBA following yet another low-scoring week. Despite boasting some of the lowest totals of the week, the Bulls delivered three straight Unders with a 95-86 loss to the Timberwolves, a stunning 96-86 triumph in San Antonio and an 88-79 defeat at the hands of host New Orleans. Chicago has gone under in four consecutive games and six of the previous eight, showing off its trademark stingy defense but having trouble generating much in the way of offense.

Surveying the schedule

The Los Angeles Clippers have had one of the most grueling schedules of any NBA team over the past two and a half weeks, playing eight of their previous 10 games away from the Staples Center. You can make it nine of 11 when the Clippers kick off the new week in Denver Monday night. But that's followed by a five-game homestand that includes games against Miami, Toronto and Philadelphia. With Los Angeles having seen its lead in the Pacific shrink, the run of home games couldn't have come at a better time.

This week's hottest and coldest NHL bets

Every week, we update you on who's hot, who's not and situational betting spots in the National Hockey League.

For the week of Jan. 27-Feb. 2

Hot team

Calgary Flames (3-0 SU)

Flames fans can't be blamed for wondering if their team would ever end up on this list. But a perfect five-game home stand has Calgary going into the first full week of February as the hottest team in the league. The Flames wrapped up the unbeaten home stretch with a 5-4 overtime win over the Chicago Blackhawks, a 4-1 triumph over the San Jose Sharks and a 4-3 OT decision over the Minnesota Wild. Goal-starved Calgary scored 21 goals in the five victories and will try to carry that momentum into the start of a three-game road trip in Montreal Tuesday.

Cold team

New York Islanders (0-3 SU)

Every time the Islanders appear to be making positive strides, they hit a rough stretch, and last week was no different. The New York offense managed just five combined goals in a loss to the Boston Bruins and back-to-back defeats at the hands of the rival New York Rangers, extending the club's overall losing streak to five games. The final three games before the Olympic break offer little hope of a bounceback, as the Islanders visit high-scoring Washington before hosting red-hot Calgary and powerhouse Colorado.

Best Over play

Washington Capitals (4-0 O/U)

Watching the Capitals certainly hasn't been dull. At least, not over the past seven days. After playing four straight Unders, Washington became the top Over play of the week, recording a 5-4 overtime win over the Buffalo Sabres and a 6-5 OT triumph over the Detroit Red Wings bookending a 5-2 loss to Columbus and a 4-3 shootout loss to Detroit in the opener of their back-to-back. Superstar winger Alex Ovechkin remains one of the most dangerous players in hockey, leading the league with 40 goals and making the Capitals an Over threat each time out.

Best Under play

Montreal Canadiens (0-3-1 O/U)

Montreal has returned to form after playing three straight Overs earlier in the month, going 0-4-2 O/U in its last six games. While that's partially a reflection on the struggles of the Canadiens' offense, it's also a tremendous relief to fans of goaltender Carey Price, who struggled mightily at the beginning of January but has fared much better of late. Price earned the shutout in a 3-0 win over Carolina before dropping consecutive 2-1 decisions to Tampa Bay and Winnipeg. Backup Peter Budaj was also sharp in his only game of the week, a 4-1 triumph over Boston.

Surveying the schedule

The Winnipeg Jets have defied the naysayers, winning eight of their last 10 games to propel themselves into the conversation in the crowded Western Conference playoff standings. The next week will go a long way in determining whether the Jets, who have thrived under new head coach Paul Maurice, are a legitimate threat for a postseason berth or simply a team on a brief roll. Winnipeg faces a tough task in the final week before the break, playing road games in Carolina, Washington and St. Louis - teams that are a combined 49-24-11 at home.

This Week's Best NHL Spot Bet Opportunities
by Sean Murphy

Spot bets are classic handicapping practices that have proven profitable no matter what sport you’re betting. Whether it’s a team looking past this week’s opponent, one coming off a hard-fought victory, or a rough patch of schedule, bettors can find value picking their spots.

Sean Murphy points out the best spot bet opportunities on the NHL schedule this week.

Letdown spot

The Lightning are coming off a big overtime win in Montreal Saturday, snapping a two-game skid in the process. Next they'll head to Minnesota for a non-conference tilt against the Wild Tuesday night. I don't believe the spot sets up well at all for Tampa Bay.

Minnesota didn't enjoy a positive road trip, dropping three of four games, capped by an overtime loss in Calgary Saturday night. That's nothing new, as the Wild have struggled on the road all season. At home, they're 19-7-2, and I expect to see them improve on that mark Tuesday.

Lookahead spot

The Blackhawks will wrap up a six-game road jaunt in Phoenix Friday, and could be ripe for the picking against a Coyotes squad that has been playing better lately, and owns a solid 16-9-3 home record entering the new week.

Keep in mind, Chicago has a roster filled with players heading to Sochi to represent their respective countries. This will mark the Blackhawks final game before those key cogs make the trek to Russia. Don't be surprised if the defending champs get caught looking ahead to the Olympic tourney here.

Schedule spot

Now let's consider the flip side of that poor spot for Chicago. The Coyotes will pack up and head to Dallas for their pre-Olympic finale Saturday night, playing on no rest after going toe-to-toe with the Blackhawks. You could chalk this one up as a letdown spot as well.

Phoenix has been average at best on the road this season, and will be facing a rested Dallas team that hasn't played in three nights. The Stars have defeated the Wild, Leafs and Penguins on home ice in the last couple of weeks, and as a bubble team, will undoubtedly be looking to head into the break on a high note.

Game of the Day: Ohio State at Iowa

Ohio State Buckeyes at Iowa Hawkeyes (-6, 138)

Ohio State is trying to prove that a rough end to January is not what the team will look like going forward. Earning a second straight road victory against a ranked opponent when the Buckeyes visit Iowa on Tuesday would go a long way to ease any concerns. The Hawkeyes survived a scare at Illinois on Saturday and are comfortably in third place in the Big Ten with a 6-3 mark that includes an 84-74 triumph at Ohio State from Jan. 12.

That loss to Iowa was the second in a string of four straight and five of six by the Buckeyes, who are hoping a 59-58 win at Wisconsin on Saturday is what the team needs to turn its season back in a positive direction. “We’ll enjoy this for half a day and then we have another tough one on Tuesday,” guard Aaron Craft told the Columbus Dispatch. “There’s not too much over-thinking going on. It’s find a way to be better than Iowa. That’s our only thought.” That is a tough assignment against a Hawkeyes team averaging 80.6 points in its last seven games.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, ESPN

LINE HISTORY: The Hawkeyes were sent out as suggested 6-point home favorites with the total at 138.

COVERS POWER RANKINGS: Ohio State (-9.7) - Iowa (-16.1) + Home Court (-3.0) = Iowa -9.4

KEY INJURIES: Ohio State: N/A. Iowa: N/A

WHAT BOOKS SAY: "Expect Iowa to be a popular play, as the Hawkeyes have covered in six of eight while the Buckeyes have only covered in one of their last six games." - Mike Perry, Sportsbook.ag.

WHAT SHARPS SAY: "Buckeyes in rare dog role (have been favored the last 13 games in row in this series), and are 8-0 SU in games after facing Wisconsin." - Marc Lawrence.

WHY BET OHIO STATE (17-5 SU, 10-11 ATS, 8-12-1 ATS): The Buckeyes will need all the defense they can muster to slow Iowa and may have found it against Wisconsin when they held the Badgers without a field goal over the final 6:43. “We had very good activity,” coach Thad Matta told the Dispatch of the defense. “I thought guys were reading things and we were pressuring the ball where we needed it.” Ohio State gave up 47 second-half points in the Jan. 12 meeting with Iowa and did not help itself by turning the ball over 17 times. LaQuinton Ross was a bright spot with 22 points in that loss and has reached double figures in six straight.

WHY BET IOWA (17-5 SU, 13-7 ATS, 12-7 O/U): Roy Devyn Marble scored 22 points and Aaron White put up 19 on 8-of-12 shooting in the win over Ohio State and the two continue to provide an effective outside-inside combination. Marble scored all 17 of his points in the second half of Saturday’s 81-74 win at Illinois while White chipped in 14 and six rebounds. The Hawkeyes are staring at a tough stretch of the schedule with Ohio State and Michigan at home before heading out on the road for two but are well-equipped to handle the rest of their Big Ten slate if reserves like center Gabriel Olaseni (15 points and 12 rebounds on Saturday) continue to produce.

TRENDS:
* Under is 5-1 in the last six meetings in Iowa.
* Under is 6-2 in the last eight meetings.
* Buckeyes are 2-5 ATS in the last seven meetings.
* Underdog is 5-2 ATS in the last seven meetings.
