I will be posting some off-season news about SEC football teams. Some good and some not so good. Feel free to add any news you think will be of interest to the CFB Forum.

Tennessee

Two Tennessee football players were arrested on alcohol related charges and resisting arrest. Linebacker A.J. Johnson and defensive lineman Danny O'Brien were taken into custody late Saturday night. Johnson, a first team all-SEC selection last season, was charged with purchasing alcohol for a person underage and resisting arrest. O'Brian, a redshirt freshman nose tackle was charged with criminal impersonation, resisting arrest and underage consumption of alcohol.

Mississippi State

The Bulldogs have hired Utah assistant Brian Johnson to be its quarterbacks coach. Johnson had several titles during his four year coaching tenure at Utah, including offensive coordinator. Johnson replaces OC Les Koenning, who took a job at Texas. The 26 year old Johnson has a long relationship with head coach Dan Mullen, who used to be an assistant at Utah under Urban Meyer. Mullen actually recruited Johnson to Utah where he was a three year starter at quarterback.

Auburn

Malzahn has added a piece to its 2015 football recruiting class less than a week after a strong closing to the 2014 class. Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College cornerback Tony Bridges announced yesterday he'll play for the Tigers. The 6-2, 180 pound Bridges, is the third commitment to Auburn's 2015 recruiting class, joining fellow MGCCC athlete Jason Smith and quarterback Tyler Queen.

Kalvaraz Bessent, a cornerback at Camden County (GA) who signed a Letter of Intent with Auburn on Wednesday, was one of four men arrested and charged with two drug related felonies and a misdemeanor during a traffic stop in Florida on Friday night. Upon searching the vehicle, authorities found 340 grams of marijuana along with scales and a handgun. Bessent was a four-star prospect and one of five defensive backs in Auburn's signing class. What a dumbass!

Alabama

Former Clemson defensive coordinator Kevin Steele has been promoted from his behind the scenes work as director of player personel at Alabama to linebackers coach. Steele was on his way to Louisville as the DC earlier this off-season, but changed his mind. With Steele taking over as LB coach, defensive coordinator Kirby Smart will move to the secondary along with Nick Saban.

that's a ton of weed to be caught with. gotta be an "intent to distribute" charge for 3/4 of a pound.... fn barners

A total of 9 UT players arrested - the result of some party. Underage drinking is such a BS charge....but there was some other circumstances; fake ID's, AJ Johnson put his hands on a cop, resisting arrest, etc. Can't imagine the punishment will be too severe.

The Auburn signee from Camden, GA will probably get out of the charges. There were 4 people in the car and none of them claimed ownership of the drugs, so they all got charged.

SEC Leads In Attendance

Once again, the Southeastern Conference led all conferences in overall attendance during the 2013 season. The average SEC stadium drew 75,674 fans per game. Second best was the Big Ten at 70,431 per contest. The Big 12 was third at 58,899, followed by the Pac 12 53,619 and ACC 49,982 of the five power conferences.

Georgia Recruiting Snapshot

The Dawgs made a bigger commitment to defense and the running game over the past few weeks, signing defensive coordinator Jeremy Pruitt away from national champion Florida State, then inking two of the top 10 running backs in the country. Sony Michel and Nick Chubb, both clones at 5-10, 210 pounds will now join the best one-two punch in the conference in Todd Gurley and Keith Marshall. Heavy recruited tightend Jeb Blazevich should play immediately in the position vacated by starter Artie Lynch. Lorenzo Carter, a 6-5, 232 pound end, appears to be a gem of the Dawgs' defensive class.

South Carolina Recruiting Snapshot

Things looked somewhat bleak on the recruiting trail for Steve Spurrier until National Signing Day, when the Gamecocks loaded up with five defensive players who rate four-star from most rating services, including linebacker Bryson Allen, a coveted tackling machine from Ellenwood, Georgia, and cornerbacks Chris Lammons and Wesley Green, who were among the nation's heaviest recruited at their position. JuCo defensive lineman Abu Lamin and Jhaustin Thomas will help ease the blow of losing All-American Jadeveon Clowney and defensive tackle Kelcy Quarles as the Gamecocks chase a fourth straight 11 win season.

Auburn

The Tigers return a strong nucleus of starters from its 2013 SEC Championship team, but there are still opportunities for talented newcomers in its 2014 recruiting class to make an early impact. Here are five who should contend for early playing time this fall.

1. D'haquille Williams. He was a top rated junior college prospect in the nation, a 6-foot-3, 215 pound receiver with 4.4 speed who could add another dimension or at least another weapon to an Auburn offense that may be a little more diverse in 2014.

2. Tre Williams. Auburn was in need of a talent infusion at linebacker and they got it with signing of this five star prospect from Mobile. Not only is Williams a tackling machine, but he's a former safety whose skills in pass coverage means he doesn't have to leave the field.

3. DaVonte Lambert. Auburn returns a lot of talent on the defensive line, even with the losses of ends Dee Ford and Nosa Egnae, but this junior college transfer brings versatility in that he can play either end or tackle and that could help him work his way into the rotation.

4. Roc Thomas. Star running back Tre Mason is headed to the NFL and Alabama's Mr. Football is on the way. Auburn has other candidates to fill Mason's lead role in the running game, most notably Cameron Artis-Payne and Peyton Barber, but Thomas has the ability and versatility to carve out some role in the offense.

5. Derrick Moncrief. Defensive coordinator Ellis Johnson was on the hunt for bigger athletes to play the Star position in its 4-2-5 defense and tried to sell 5 star Rashaan Evans on the ideal of filling that position. Evans instead chose to play linebacker at Alabama, but Auburn had already landed a commitment from another jumbo sized safety in 6-foot-3, 226 pound Moncrief.

Alabama

Alabama's 2015 recruiting class is shaping up to be very promising. The Crimson Tide has seven commitments out of the 25 athletes it can sign next February, and all are high caliber players. 247Sports already ranks this recruiting class as No. 2 in the nation, but that will change during the course of the next year. One five-star athlete has committed, as have six four-star players. Only SEC rival Texas A&M ranks slightly ahead of Alabama with the same number of commitments. Tennessee is third and LSU fourth. The Tigers, however, lead in five-star commitments with two.

Defensive end Mekhi Brown from Columbus, Ga., highlights Alabama's class as the five-star athlete. He's considered the No. 3 end in the country. Running back Desherrius Flowers is the top in-state player committed. He's a four-star player ranked No. 4 at his position and No. 3 in the state. The other in-state player is offensive guard Lester Cotton from Tuscaloosa. He's the No. 17 guard in the nation and No. 8 prospect in the state. Safety Deionte Thompson of Orange, Texas, and defensive tackle Jonathan Ledbetter of Tucker, Ga., are players the team needs to maintain its depth. Thompson is ranked the No. 5 safety in the nation. Receiver Daylon Charlot from Patterson, La., continues the string of recruits coming from Les Miles back yard. Offensive guard Dallas Warmack from Atlanta will follow his brother Chance Warmack (NFL) and play for the Tide.

Top JUCO Transfers

Several junior college transfers will be added to SEC teams this fall. Most coaches recruit these players to come in an start...not to sit on the bench. Nick Saban among others has has nice success with this approach. The following list are JUCO players who should have an immediate impact for the team.

Contavious Blair, Offensive Line, Tennessee

Blair is just one recruit in Tennessee's whopping 35 man 2014 class, but he may be one of the most important signings. The Vols lost all five starters on the offensive line (OUCH). Blair ranked as the No. 8 prospect in the 247Sports Composite junior college ratings and comes to Knoxville after a two year stint at Garden City Community College. At 6-foot-8, and 300 pounds, Blair has the necessary size to start at one of the tackle spots this fall.

Abu Lamin, Defensive Tackle, South Carolina

South Carolina has to replace ends Chaz Sutton and Jadeveon Clowney and tackle Kelcy Quarles on the defensive line. The Gamecocks still have talent in the trenches, led by sophomore end Darius English and senior tackle J.T. Surratt but Lamin is expected to be a part of the solution up front during 2014. At 6-foot-4, 305 pounds, Lamin already has the size to be a factor in the tough SEC, and with South Carolina returning a few experienced options in the trenches, Lamin will be given every opportunity to push for a starting job.

Jermaine Eluemunor and Avery Gennery, Offensive Line, Texas A&M

Even with the departure of All-American tackle Jake Mathews, the Aggies should still have a formidable offensive line. But you can never have enough talent or depth on the O-line in the Southeastern Conference, so the Aggies landed two top-10 players in the signing class. Eluemunor is rated as the No. 7 player out of junior college and Gennesy is rated No. 9. Both players are likely to factor prominently into the Aggies' line play this season.

Dominick Jackson, Offensive Line, Alabama

With left tackle Cyrus Kouandjio and guard Anthony Steen headed to the NFL, Alabama has two significant holes on the offensive line. Enter Jackson who was ranked the No. 2 prospect in Junior college and was a member of the JUCO All-American team. He appears to have the size and skill set necessary to play a big role in Alabama's offensive line development. If you are recruited at Alabama from junior college, you are expected to come in and play.

D'haquille Williams, Safety, Auburn

The Tigers return one of the best receiving corps in the SEC. With the addition of Williams, this group just got deeper. The Louisiana native ranked as the No. 1 junior college prospect after catching 51 passes for 732 yards and 9 touchdowns last season for Mississippi Gulf Community College. Williams is a big target at 6-foot-3 and should be another valuable weapon for Gus Malzahn's offense.

DJ Pettway and Jarran Reed, Defensive Line, Alabama

If you sign as a junior college player at Alabama under Nick Saban, you certainly are not brought in to sit on the bench. Pettway and Reed were standouts at East Mississippi Community College during 2013. Pettway was recruited at Alabama initially but got into trouble and was sent to junior college. Reed ranks as the No. 13 prospect and he and Pettway are expected to make an immediate impact giving the Tide one of the top defensive lines in the SEC.

Jarran Reed signed w/ UF last year but didn't graduate from JUCO in time. Now he's at Bama. Go figure....

Coach, you were right predicting Auburn DB recruit Kalvaraz Bessent would get out of charges from his drug arrest. Bessent, who was one of four charged with felony possession of more than 20 grams of marijuana, possession with intent to distribute and misdemeanor drug paraphernalia in Florida during a traffic stop February 7...all charges have been amazingly dropped. Auburn coach Gus Malzahn has not made a public statement over the last week regarding Bessent's arrest. Malzahn did go out and sign another defensive back Thursday from College of San Mateo. Joseph Turner a former Washington commit visited Auburn earlier this week and committed to the school.

Missouri

The Missouri Tigers shocked the SEC as much or more than Auburn shocking Alabama. Nobody in his right mind thought Missouri was Atlanta bound in 2013. Still, some were quick to point out the Tigers' favorable and lucky schedule last season was the main reason. With starting quarterback, running back, left tackle, top wide receiver, both defensive ends, middle linebacker and 75% of the secondary GONE, nobody really expects Missouri to win the East again this year...except maybe the locker room and coaching staff. The good news is the bulk of the offensive line returns, along with quarterback Matty Mauk, receiver Dorial Green Beckham and two legit running backs in Russell Hansbrough and Marcus Murphy. Defensive Coordinator Dave Steckel has proven he'll put together a formidable defense, but the secondary is most concerning. The Tigers will be an interesting team to watch this season. They certainly won't sneak up on anyone during 2014.

Arkansas

The coaching carousel isn't over for the Razorbacks. Bret Bielema has to replace defensive assistant Taver Johnson, who accepted a job at Purdue, and on-campus recruiting coordinator Chris Hauser, who was recently fired. Johnson and Hauser make Arkansas' third and fourth departures from the staff this off season. Robb Smith replaced former DC Chris Ash after he left for Ohio State, and Rory Segrest replaced Charlie Partridge after he left to become head coach at FAU. Arkansas recruiting class was ranked 30th in the country, according to 247Sports and I'm guessing Bielema believes the staff should have recruited better.

Top All-Purpose Back Signees

Here's a look at three of the best all-purpose backs in this year's SEC recruiting class (HS recruits only).

D.K. Buford, 5-10 190, Ole Miss
Buford was an in-state battle, as both Ole Miss and Mississippi State wanted this blazing fast back. Buford will be a weapon catching the ball out of the back field, and he's a big play waiting to happen in all facets of the game.

Darrell Scott, 5-11 180, Tennessee
South Carolina wanted Scott badly, but in the end he went with the Volunteers and he will come in with Jalen Hurd to give the Vols an impressive offensive backfield group.

Stanley Williams, 5-8 190, Kentucky
What Williams lacks in size, he makes up for it with spunk. Williams is very quick, and he is one of several four-star prospects coming to play for the Wildcats.

LSU

Last season, the Tigers never quite played up to its talent level, and the team wasn't in the hunt for the national title like it should have been with the improved passing game, but winning 10 games (10-3) and taking the Outback Bowl was still a success. LSU not only beat Auburn, but it won by 14 points doing a better job than anyone of keeping the high-powered attack in check. A sleepy start proved costly against Ole Miss, but the only other losses came on the road against Alabama and in a wild one against Georgia. The Tigers blew away Texas A&M and came up with strong wins over Mississippi State, Florida and Iowa, but it wasn't a BCS season. LSU will have a lot of new faces this season including a new quarterback but the way Miles recruits, I wouldn't ever count his teams out.

Georgia

Injuries, injuries and more injuries. The story of Georgia's 2013 season on the way to an 8-5 season. The Dawgs were a beaten up team that tried its best, but didn't have the personnel in losses to Missouri, Vanderbilt and Auburn. Georgia came within one miraculous pass play against Auburn of changing up the course of the college football season, but they still ended up with a decent season for almost anyone else. For a team with national title aspirations, losing the Gator Bowl to Nebraska wasn't the way the plan was supposed to go.

Tennessee

For all the positives and all the good things that happened under head coach Butch Jones, it was still another losing season (four in a row). The win over South Carolina was the highlight of the year, but that was followed up by four straight losses. The schedulewas not an easy one for a team trying to find new footing. Along with facing South Carolina, there were games against Oregon, Alabama, Missouri and Auburn. Beating Austin Peay to start the year and Kentucky to close out wasn't impressive. The Vols could very well be looking at five straight losing seasons after 2014.

I've been hearing rumors that former Sooners QB Kendall Thompson could be looking to transfer to Vanderbilt. His dad said yesterday on a local radio show that he has made contact and is very interested. Plus he's a very smart kid who is about to graduate. And a grad degree from Vandy wouldn't be bad to walk away with. Plus he heard the SEC was weak and wanted to start right away. ..Kidding! Kidding!

Alabama

Dee Hart, a third year reserve running back during the 2013 season was arrested Sunday in Tuscaloosa and charged with giving false information and possesion of marjiuana. Hart was a five-star prospect out of Orlando, Florida, but suffered two torn ACL injuries before his freshman season. The sophomore was a special teams standout with nine tackles last season. He carried the ball 22 times for 78 yards and a touchdown. Hart is no longer on the team and is reportedly looking to transfer to Central Florida.

Ole Miss

Two Ole Miss starting linebackers were arrested over the weekend in separate incidents. Denzel Nkemdiche was charged with disorderly conduct and disturbing the peace, while Serderius Bryant was charged with public drunkenness and disturbing the peace. Standard response from Hugh Freeze. "The players are suspended until we know more about what happened." Bryant led the team in tackles last season and Nkemdiche was a starter his freshman and sophomore years.

GoSooners, you got me thinking about quarterbacks so I did a little research on signal callers for the SEC this season.

SEC Quarterbacks

The Southeastern Conference lost a ton of quarterback talent after the 2013 season. Seven quarterbacks who combined for 20,298 passing yards and 167 touchdowns last season have departed. Included in the group were two time national champion (AL -AJ McCarron), the SEC's all-time leading passer (GA - Aaron Murray), and a Heisman Trophy winner (A&M - Johnny Manziel). Only one of the top eight quarterbacks in the SEC in pass efficiency is back (AU - Nick Marshall). Only one of the league's five 3,000 yard passers is back (OM - Bo Wallace). So, who will be the quarterbacks in the conference this season. Well, Auburn's Nick Marshall is back and should be better than last year with a season under Malzahn's system. Mississippi State's Dak Prescott who passed for 1,940 yards and ran for 829 yards returns. Ole Miss's Bo Wallace returns for a third season after passing for 3,346 yards last year. Missouri will be depending on Maty Mauk who started four games during 2013, and South Carolina's Dylan Thompson will likely start after reserve roles behind Connor Shaw the past two seasons. Others to watch for are Florida's Jeff Driskel. Georgia's Hudson Mason, Vandy's Patton Robinette and LSU's Anthony Jennings. Some starters back who didn't distinguish themselves much in 2013 are Tennessee's Justin Worley, Arkansas' Brandon Allen and Kentucky's Maxwell Smith. Alabama and Texas A&M both have a lot of young talent, but little experience among the candidates to become the starter. It will be fun to watch how some of these quarterback situations develope.

Gosh...I never realized that Alabama can seat more than 100K fans, much-less average more than the Rose Bowl game draws (a once-a-year event). Talk about fan support/participation.......

Mack, both Alabama and Auburn enjoy great fan support from this football crazy state. Last spring, the Tigers and Tide drew more than 160,000 fans to their spring games.

Florida

Florida's disappointing 4-8 season dropped the Gator's out of the top 25 (after starting the season at No. 10) and all the way to fourth in their own state behind national champion Florida State, Miami and Central Florida. But Florida's program remain's among the elite in college football (and No. 1 in the SEC and in the state) in terms of value. In terms of valuation based on revenue, growth and other factors, Florida's football program is No. 5 in the nation with a value of $660.8 million, according to the Wall Street Journal. The nation's No. 1 program is Texas. There are four other SEC teams in the top 10. Alabama is No. 7, Georgia No. 8, Auburn No. 9 and LSU No. 10. Among Florida's in-state rivals, Florida State is 22nd ($277.9) and Miami is 35th ($180.8).

Ole Miss and Texas A&M

Play ON a team that is showing positive signs with a coach in his 3rd year. Some coaching changes do bring about immediate results but that is the exception, not the rule. Many times, a college coach will hit his stride in his 3rd year, especially if the coach has done well recruiting. By year three, his own recruits will be playing first string and the team is well adjusted to all the new systems and techniques that the new coach has implemented. Teams that are not being hyped in a coach's 3rd year despite improvement from year one to year two, should provide tremendous line value.

Florida

Play AGAINST a team with a short term head coach that is on the "hot seat", unless he's beloved and respected by his players. If a coach hasn't turned a program around in the usual 3-year "honeymoon" period and is under fire, the added pressure is not likely to help. He probably worked hard and gave it his best effort since his arrival. If that hasn't been enough, it is not likely to get better. The coach may take drastic measures like firing and hiring new assistants, bringing in new offensive or defensive schemes, and throwing young untested players onto the field...but these are usually signs of desperation. Additionally, unless the team reveres the coach, there is no reason for them to work harder in practice and hustle more in games to save his job. CL, I still can't believe Foley brought Muschamp back for a 4th season. I can't believe Muschamp was able to convince Roper to take the OC job, knowing it's a "win now" situation. If UF doesn't win a minimum of 8 games, he's gotta be fired. Can't really see no other way he stays on.

I like Freeze but I'm still not totally sold. Losing to Miss State was surprising. He'll have a solid stock pile of talent to work with this year. I'm curious to see how Sumlin does post-Johnny Football. His defenses have been very questionable for 2 years and he was 4-4 in the SEC last year (1 game better than Muschamp).
