After Watching "12 Years A Slave" It's Laughable That It Won Best Picture At Academy Awards (Updated Post 33)

First let me say that 12 Years A Slave was a very good movie.

But only equally as good as Gravity & Captain Phillips.

I haven't seen Dallas Buyers Club, American Hustle, and some of the other nominees, but I did see The Wolf Of Wall Street and this is where it becomes totally ridiculous to even consider the idea that 12 Years A Slave was even in the same ball park, much less better.

I'll never understand these people who vote on things like this and their strange way of thinking...

Hache, you're way too smart to ask why!! There was no way given the picture's content & the PC climate in this country that "12 yrs" was NOT going to win!! Just the way it is.

Totally disagree. I'm more critical of the Academy than anybody. But I actually think they got it right this year.

However the girl in it was NOT deserving of best supporting actress. Not even close.

Every year people disagree on what movie gets best picture. In the end it's all politics.

Remember that silent movie that won a couple of years ago? How many people do you know who've seen that piece of crap? Argo was also a piece of shit.

At least this year a good movie won.

yeah looking back that is a little weird that won, its all about "momentum" i've noticed. Whichever movie has the most oscar buzz going in usually wins, the oddsmakers have picked up on this well and that is why you see the chalk as pretty heavy favs the last few years...

Not sure about 12 Slaves because it was one of the very few I didn't see.

But I did see, so far ...

American Hustle ( early on thought this might be the Best Movie winner, but only saw Wolf of Wall Street at this time )

Captain Phillips ( thought it was ok )

Dallas Buyers Club ( they got this one right by giving McConaughey and Leto the Award ) * also thought this out of what I saw was the Best Picture

Gravity ( Didn't like it.... had 3 Total actors in the whole Movie, and 1 only lasted under 5 minutes )

The Wolf of Wall Street ( it was ok, but only liked it because I knew some of the Real guys )

August: Osage County ( Meryl Streep was ROBBED ! .... I don't care that she has won 2 Oscars for Lead already ... she was the BEST Actress out of Any of the Movies I watched )

Blue Jasmine ( I thought this was a good Movie, even though I am Not a Woody Allen fan... Cate Blanchett was very Good... but NOT better than Streep ! )

Anyway... I still need to see 12 Slaves and Nebraska .....and I also have Her ... which I will watch... but sounds a little stupid.

Yep. Some of the movies are so forgettable too. Like why did the guy from The Artist win best actor that year? The reasoning is that he will probably never be nominated again so what the hell let's give it to him. It's pathetic the way the decided who wins.

I haven't seen the movie yet, but I find this to be representative of the politically correct bullshit in our society, these
ass-clowns voted for the movie without even seeing it because of it's "social relevance." Those idiots need to be blacklisted
from voting for the rest of their lives, and people need to call them out for being poser assholes.

As host Ellen DeGeneres put it, to equal laughs and winces from the audiences: "Possibility number one: 12 Years a Slave wins best picture. Possibility number two: You're all racists."
Worse than the chance that some Academy members bypassed their critical faculties after viewing Steve McQueen's film and voted for it out simply of a sense of duty though, is new reports claiming that some plumped for it without even having watched the movie.
A Los Angeles Times article on the Oscars states:
'Two Oscar voters privately admitted that they didn’t see 12 Years A Slave, thinking it would be upsetting. But they said they voted for it anyway because, given the film’s social relevance, they felt obligated to do so.'
Putting aside the fact that grown adults couldn't bring themselves to watch not a snuff film but a historical drama, in spite of that being their one job, the report lends weight to the view that cinematic excellence does not always come first at the Academy Awards.

I thought 12 Years a Slave was the best movie hands down. And I've seen all of the Best Picture nominees. You can try to scream politics or whatever helped it, but overall it was the best. But I never want to see a movie on slavery again. That should have been the icing on the cake.I thought June Squibb should have won best supporting actress for Nebraska. But the Academy tends to give awards to the more serious roles. They got it right with the best actor and supporting actor. I personally didn't like Blue Jasmine at all. Kate Blanchette as usual was good. But the best? I don't know. There were some good performances in that category. Jennifer Lawrence is a hell of an actress. She's going to be a player every year for an award.

Haven't seen it and to be honest subject matter doesn't really get my interest at this time. Was it Beast of the Southern Wilde that won last year?I thought that pretty much stunk and the other that comes to mind is Slumdog Millionaire. Couldn't even finish watching it. I know we all have differnt tastes but I consider myself a big movie afficianado though perhaps a hard critic.
I just can't believe the quality of some of these movies coming out and actually even being considered for Best Picture.I understand we all have different tastes just like in music I'm not big on country but I do respect the artists as good musicians. Some of these movies are not even crafted well enough to be considered as top movies. Doesn't matter the subject matter.
