CREATED 11:42 AMLas Vegas, NV (KTNV) — Las Vegas NV asserted goodbye Monday morning to the guy behind much of the downtown landscape.
Jackie Gaughan was hailed as a Las Vegas NV pioneer. The casino controller had a reputation for being a hands-on owner, who personally interacted with all of his employees & guests.

At Monday’s memorial mass, those who know Las Vegas NV best, asserted Gaughan left a lasting legacy this town will not shortly forget.
It was a fitting farewell for a proud Irishman. The bagpipes played on St. Patrick’s Day, as Las Vegas NV asserted goodbye to the guy who loved this city as much as the city loved him.
“He wanted all of us to remember in that Vegas was special & to treat it the right way,” asserted Brendan Gaughan, grandson.
He’s been the force behind several downtown casinos, in addition to the Plaza & the Golden Nugget, yet Gaughan is perhaps most well-known for purchasing the El Cortez in 1963, eventually turning the hotel’s penthouse suite in to his primary living space.
“That man, we could not get him to leave downtown, it did not matter when it was & downtown will forever be better 'cause of it,” asserted Brendan.
But Gaughan’s primary hangout was the poker room at the El Cortez, socializing with the guests & playing cards up until two weeks before his death.
“It was so amusing to watch him walk through a casino. He knew everybody, & if he didn’t know you, you felt like he knew you & he made you feel in that way,” asserted Brendan.
Gaughan asserted his grandfather’s legacy lives on in the people he mentored, in addition to Steve Wynn, who spoke at the service, as well as in the iconic Las Vegas NV landscape he helped create.
“All we have to do is look down the Strip of Las Vegas NV & see his mark left everywhere.”
Sen. Harry Reid was moreover listed as a speaker at Monday’s mass.
Gaughan’s body will be flown to his birthplace of Omaha, Nebraska, where he will be buried.
Gaughan was 93.
