Been here for 15 years. Had my ups and downs. Lots of pussy, lots of booze, lots of gambling, lots of fun. Was posting on the Rx when most of you were in short pants. Knew Ken personally

The lights are growing dim now. I know a life of crime has led me to this sorry fate, and yet, I blame society. Society made me what I am.

That sums up life in Costa Rica quite well. The rest, well, even though I don't know you, I hope this isn't a suicide note.

No doubt Raoul.

I was in town a couple weeks ago and it seems every time the changes in scenery become amplified even more. Some observances:

There are less and less gringos around the Central Valley. I went to a bunch of my old haunts I have some fond memories of, and not expecting much as I've outgrown that scene a bit, it was still a let down.

The red light district/down town was a ghost town. Monkey bar, closed. Horseshoe, closed. Even the old Clarion (RIP Graeme), whatever they call it now, closed.

About every restaurant with an exception of a few that were good in 2009, 2010, even 2011, has turned over or closed.

Chef Tony was rumored to be at a new spot, outside of down town. Stopped by, and he was GONE already. (Although the replacement was damn good, the name of the place escapes me but the chef was Andre or Andres or something close.)

Down to Jaco....

Beetle bar, under new management. (Thankfully, that last owner ruined a good thing IMO) The new place was a ghost town. Cocal on the other hand, was NOT. Didn't have energy for Le Loft, but that place is always fun.

Lots of good cuisine. When I visit, this is really the best spot (without going to Guana) in the country for my money. Fun times, lots more to do other than just drink, and great food. I've seen a lot of my old buddies move down that way, and I don't blame them. That area is where it's at socially.

White house? Didn't even inquire about it but was always fun up there for a change of pace to drink or get lunch. Heard it's also dead.

Estribos, TOT, as noted here....gone, moved, or changing direction.

Things sure do change fast down there in comparison to South Florida. I had a lot more fun down there 10-15 years ago, but then again, I'd like to think we all did.

I think a big part of the decline in the Escazu (and Santa Ana) scene is that the sportsbooks have moved away from hiring gringos without papers, and thats normally about 99% of gringos and most of the party animals. Most gringos with papers, have them due to family ties and their play time is limited by the dominant Tica's in their lives. Agree that Jaco is booming. My one complaint (and only cause I'm a little older now then when I arrived) about the spot is its a really really late night place. So unless you are prepared to be fired up and ready to party at 2am, you will probably just hit Cocal for a few drinks, have a good dinner somewhere and call it a night. Although that beats a night in most parts of the world anyhow. With the new Crocs Casino and Resort being built on the north side of the beach, will be interesting to watch this growth accelerate. I'm very bullish on Jaco, even the beaches are clean and it is a blue flag water destination right now.

This is the Mona Lisa Hotel and it is open and has one of the craziest poker games on the planet starting every afternoon, but other than that its a bit of a ghost town.

Just left CR last week....having a good time is never hard....just hang with Judge Wapner.....nothing will be the same as 2000-2007 but that's the way it is....friends with families and other responsibilities taking preference over getting wasted every night as it should be...getting old is a bitch, friends passing and things change....great seeing old friends and making a couple new ones...
