TAMPA, Fla. -- A spring training game between the Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees created a buzz.
The game was delayed for seven minutes heading into the bottom of the third inning Tuesday because of a swarm of bees in left field.
Red Sox left fielder Mike Carp walked toward the infield to point out the situation to umpires at Steinbrenner Field, and they called out the grounds crew to address the matter.
The grounds crew received a large cheer from the fans, who were told to be patient during the stoppage.
Yankees first baseman Mark Teixeira came out with two bottles of honey.
"I'm a big peanut butter-and-honey guy," Teixeira told reporters after the game, according to the Sporting News. "Love it. So I always know where the honey is [in the clubhouse]."
And what was the purpose of bringing the honey out?
"What I thought was, if you could just do a line of honey out to the parking lot, the bees would maybe follow it, and then just leave us alone."
After the removal process by the grounds crew, New York's Francisco Cervelli tripled to deep left.
Tuesday's delay was the latest on a list of bizarre interruptions in games across sports in recent years.
Among the others:
• An invasion of midges led to a delay during Game 2 of the 2007 American League Division Series. The bugs may have gotten to then-Yankees reliever Joba Chamberlain, who blew the save in an eventual 2-1 win for the Indians.
• A rare rain delay in San Diego didn't stop a swarm of bees from causing a 52-minute delay when the Houston Astros visited the Padres in July 2009.
• San Francisco didn't do much to slow the Baltimore Ravens in the first half of Super Bowl XLVII, but a 34-minute power outage early in the third quarter did the job as the 49ers almost closed a 22-point deficit in an eventual 34-31 loss.
• And things got a little batty in Milwaukee in January, as a bat circling the court caused multiple delays in the second half of Marquette's men's basketball win against Providence.
