Los Angeles -108 over Arizona
10:00 PM EST. The Dodgers took the opener in the this series by a score of 3-1 and that was against Arizona’s best pitcher, Wade Miley who struck out eight batters but who lasted just five innings because of a high pitch count. The Dodgers lineup is loaded with patient hitters and they figure to find the going much easier today against Trevor Cahill. 2013 was a year to forget for Cahill, who saw his ERA rise near 4.00 and missed all of July with hip and shoulder problems. Despite the recent struggles, Cahill is still just entering his age-26 season and has put up better numbers in the past. Do his skills point to a turnaround? No. Cahill’s skils indicate he deserved the 2013 setback. He wasn't able to sustain 2012'sstrikeout gains, as it fell back to below-average levels in 2013. Cahill's control spiked as well, which resulted in another poor level, his fourth drop over the last five seasons. His calling card has always been an elite groundball rate. Cahill has made his living off a sinking fastball with heavy downward movement—he threw the pitch over half the time in 2013. It's been a double-edged sword for Cahill, however, as it generates plenty of groundballs at the expense of control. Much like his pitch movement, Cahill's downward-trending skill set points to another ERA near 4.00 without many strikeouts and that’s a profile we don’t want to back against Hyun-Jin Ryu.

Seemed like Ryu had the deck stacked against him as he entered 2013. He was a MLB rookie pitcher from the Far East without Yu Darvish’s stuff or fanfare and there were questions about the level of competition in the Korean League he came from. One season in, it’s obvious he belongs: Not only did Ryu have a terrific debut at this level but there are great signs going forward. His second half skills gains across the board bode well, as does his two disaster outings the entire season. Ryu’s groundball lean helps keep the ball in the yard and he performed even better on the road. Ryu has gotten a bit of help from a mildly fortunate 77% strand rate, but there are no alarms from his ERA/xERA gap. The 26-year-old has been amazingly steady and looks like a potential mid-rotation mainstay behind the Kershaw/Greinke duo for the next several years. All signs point to a legit starter in 2014. Invest.
