Goalpost dunks will draw flags

Not only is the New Orleans Saints' Jimmy Graham redefining the tight end position, but he has also inspired an NFL rule change. According to the league's vice president of officiating, players will no longer be allowed to dunk the ball over the goalpost after touchdowns.

Dean Blandino confirmed the rule change during a radio interview with "The Dan Patrick Show" on Tuesday. He said dunking the ball over the crossbar will now be considered a foul along with other touchdown celebrations that involve props.
Previously, dunks were grandfathered in as a legal celebration, along with the Lambeau Leap.

"We grandfathered in some, the Lambeau Leap and things like that, but dunking will come out," Blandino said, according to NFL.com. "Using the ball as a prop or any object as a prop, whether that's the goalpost, the crossbar, that will come out and that will be a foul next season."

Graham is clearly the main inspiration for the rule. Twice in his career, his celebratory dunks have knocked the uprights off balance. Last season in Atlanta, a Thursday night game had to be delayed while workers releveled the crossbar.
And no player in the NFL will be more affected by the rule change than Graham, who has caught more touchdown passes over the past three seasons (36) than anyone else in the league. A former basketball player at the University of Miami, the 6-foot-7 Graham has made the goalpost dunk his trademark celebration.

Graham responded to the news in a tweet Tuesday afternoon, saying: "I guess I'll have to lead the @nfl in penalties next year!" along with a photo-shopped picture of a referee jumping to block his attempt to dunk a ball over the crossbar. He later deleted the tweet

Why don't they just raise the goalpost 3 feet? It would help in making FG calls and also not making 50-yard FG's quite so automatic.

The NFL is sickening. I hate their hypocrisy. They want to be some wholesome product but in the end it's a sport where every play the players are risking brain injury and paralysis. That to me is more offensive than some guy celebrating in the end zone.

I saw that, he said he didn't think fantasy football was more than a fad.

He is 1 of the smarter businessmen in the world but that seems like a reach. Tough to predict the future but that seems like sour grapes....

NFL continues to come up with idiotic rules & ideas...

But if it's knocking cross bars out of level and slowing the game down??

I agree with FairWarning cross bars should be raised, so should the height of the up rights.

i think they need to even the playing ground and give the defense some help and not trying to give the offense all the help as we all know they want to see a lot of pts to keep the rating up....the modern day nfl is like the arena league pts and pts and pts....very boring

Happy they did this. Why should this guy be allowed to fuck up the cross bars and slow the game down. It's annoying.

What Graham (or any other player) should do is go to make the goal-post dunk and just stop right before the "dunk" part. Essentially doing the actual dunk, but pulling back at the last second...just to mock the rule. Would a flag be thrown on that?

No dunking but they can still throw a 50MPH fastball at the wall after a TD? I swear one of these times someone will be severely hurt.
