NHL Western Conference playoff betting preview: Round 1

The Anaheim Ducks are the best of a crowded lot atop the Western Conference playoffs. Anaheim wrapped a sensational season with a conference-best 54 victories and 116 points, but face a challenging road to the Stanley Cup final. Colorado, San Jose and St. Louis all finished with more than 110 points while Chicago and Los Angeles rounded out the 100-point club.

Anaheim Ducks vs. Dallas Stars

Season series: Stars won 2-1 SU, 2-1 over/under
Series prices: Ducks -185, Stars +165

Why bet the Ducks: Anaheim's 1-2 punch of center Ryan Getzlaf (87 points) and winger Corey Perry (82) finished second and fifth, respectively, in league scoring and guided the Ducks to the second-best offense in the NHL (266 goals). The Ducks tied St. Louis for the No. 2 goal differential in the league at plus-57, and finished the season on a high, reeling off four consecutive victories to corral the No. 1 seed in the West.

Why bet the Stars: Dallas gave the Ducks all sorts of problems in the regular season, winning two of three meetings and handing Anaheim one of its worst losses of the season - a 6-3 defeat back on Nov. 26. The Stars were one of the toughest home foes in the entire league, posting a 23-11-7 mark in their own building. Forward Tyler Seguin, who enjoyed a breakout season with 37 goals, could make life miserable for the Ducks defense.

San Jose Sharks vs. Los Angeles Kings

Season series: Kings won 3-2 SU, 1-2-2 over/under
Series prices: Sharks -145, Kings +125

Why bet the Sharks: No team in the West won more games in their own arena than the Sharks, who tied Anaheim with 29 home victories while earning 63 of a possible 82 points there. Offensive stars Joe Pavelski (41 goals, third-best in NHL) and Joe Thornton (65 assists, second) paced a potent attack that produced the fourth-most goals in the conference, while Antti Niemi (39-17-7, 2.39 GAA, .913 SV%) starred in goal.

Why bet the Kings: Los Angeles had San Jose's number in the regular season, losing just once in regulation while limiting them to just three goals in their final three encounters. The Kings' stout defense and goaltending limited opponents to the fewest goals in the conference (174) by a sizeable margin - and was particularly stingy after the Olympic break, allowing an average of 1.91 goals per contest.

Colorado Avalanche vs. Minnesota Wild

Season series: Avalanche won 4-1 SU, 2-2-1 over/under
Series prices: Avalanche -135, Wild +115

Why bet the Avalanche: No team in the NHL had a better road mark than Colorado, which went 26-11-4 away from home - mirroring its record at the Pepsi Center. Few clubs in the conference boast the balanced scoring of the Avalanche; five players reached the 20-goal plateau, while another five scored between 10 and 19 goals. Netminder Semyon Varlamov (41-14-6, 2.41 GAA, .927 SV%) emerged as a Vezina Trophy candidate.

Why bet the Wild: Minnesota comes into the post-season with plenty of momentum, having gone 6-1-1 to close out the regular season. Enigmatic goalie Ilya Bryzgalov was sensational down the stretch, allowing two goals or fewer in five straight games bridging March and April - including consecutive shutouts over Pittsburgh and Winnipeg. If he outplays Varlamov, the Wild have a chance at the upset.

St. Louis Blues vs. Chicago Blackhawks

Season series: Blues win 3-2 SU, 2-3 over/under
Series prices: Blues -115, Blackhawks -105

Why bet the Blues: St. Louis positioned itself as a force throughout the regular season thanks to a well-balanced offense and a stingy defense before collapsing down the stretch to see its chances of the No. 1 seed disappear. Netminder Ryan Miller is better than his 0-5-0 record over the final nine days suggests, and the Blues' special teams (eighth in power-play %, second in penalty-kill %) gives them a big advantage in non-5-on-5 situations.

Why bet the Blackhawks: The defending champions know what is required to succeed over the gruelling Stanley Cup playoff stretch, and were able to allow star forwards Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews to recover from injury - and earn some extra rest - heading into the post-season. Chicago boasts one of the league's top offenses (3.2 goals per game), and a rejuvenated Toews and Kane may tilt the series in Chicago's favor.

NHL Eastern Conference playoff betting preview: Round 1

The Boston Bruins are the team to beat in the Eastern Conference after capturing the Presidents' Trophy with 54 wins and 117 points. The 2012 Stanley Cup champions will look to make their third final appearance in four seasons, but could face some stiff competition from the Pittsburgh Penguins, Tampa Bay Lightning and Montreal Canadiens.

Boston Bruins vs. Detroit Red Wings

Season series: Red Wings won 3-1 SU, 1-2-1 over/under
Series prices: Bruins -300, Red Wings +240

Why bet the Bruins: Boston was the class of the league at both ends of the ice, finishing third in the NHL with 261 goals for while surrendering the second-fewest goals against (177). That plus-84 differential was 42 better than any other team in the East; Detroit was a -8 by comparison. Add in the Bruins' 31-7-3 home mark and it's clear they're the team to beat in the East.

Why bet the Red Wings: Detroit gave the powerhouse Bruins one of the toughest times of any team in the league, winning three of four regular-season meetings while outscoring Boston 13-10 over that stretch. The Red Wings handed the Bruins one of their seven regulation home losses while posting an admirable 18-13-10 mark at Joe Louis Arena. If Detroit can steal one of the first two games, it may be able to pull off the upset.

Tampa Bay Lightning vs. Montreal Canadiens

Season series: Lightning won 3-1 SU, 0-4 over/under
Series prices: Lightning -120, Canadiens +100

Why bet the Lightning: Tampa Bay not only dominated the head-to-head series with the Canadiens, it surged past Montreal for home-ice advantage on the strength of a season-ending four-game winning streak. Electrifying forward Steven Stamkos scored 25 goals in 37 regular-season games and appears to have recovered nicely from his broken leg, while rookie Ondrej Palat surprised most with a 59-point freshman campaign.

Why bet the Canadiens: Bet against Carey Price at your peril. Price solidified his place as one of the world's top big-game netminder in leading Canada to gold at the Sochi Olympics in February, and put together a solid regular season (34-20-5, 2.32 GAA, .927 SV%) despite struggling with consistency. Max Pacioretty finished the year with nine goals over his final 11 games, and his 39 on the year ranked him fourth in the NHL.

Pittsburgh Penguins vs. Columbus Blue Jackets

Season series: Penguins won 5-0 SU, 3-2 over/under
Series prices: Penguins -235, Blue Jackets +195

Why bet the Penguins: Pittsburgh dominated the head-to-head series in 2013-14, winning all five meetings - three by more than one goal. The Penguins have the league's scoring leader in Sidney Crosby and a host of other scoring options at their disposal, while finishing in the top-five league-wide in power-play success (first, 23.4 percent) and penalty-killing efficiency (fifth, 85 percent).

Why bet the Blue Jackets: Marc-Andre Fleury may not wear a Columbus jersey, but he could be the Blue Jackets' biggest asset. The Pittsburgh netminder has a notoriously poor postseason track record - punctuated by a 4.63 goals-against average in 2011-12 and a 3.52 GAA last year - and has been a popular lightning rod for fans who have seen their team go five years without reaching the final.

New York Rangers vs. Philadelphia Flyers

Season series: Tied 2-2 SU, 1-2-1 over/under
Series prices: Rangers -145, Flyers +125

Why bet the Rangers: New York's perennially underrated defense is no longer going unnoticed: the Rangers were one of only two East teams to allow fewer than 200 goals this season, leading to a plus-25 goal differential that tied Tampa Bay for third in the conference. New York also boasted an impressive 25-14-2 mark away from Madison Square Garden, making it a dangerous foe both at home and on the road.

Why bet the Flyers: The Philadelphia offense caught fire at just the right time, finishing second only to the Bruins in goals per game after the Olympic break (3.22) while scoring the sixth-most power-play goals (16) in that span. Superstar forward Claude Giroux finished third in league scoring with 86 points and gives the Flyers a decided edge in scoring; Rangers deadline acquisition Martin St. Louis has just eight points in 19 games with New York.

Three goalies who could lead their teams to the Stanley Cup

The quest for the Stanley Cup often comes down to which team has the hottest goaltender - and this year will be no exception.

With several teams sporting sensational netminding, don't be surprised to see a handful of under-the-radar clubs make some noise on the way to the Stanley Cup final. And if past history is any indication, all it takes to swing a series is a goalie on a hot streak.

Here are three teams that could steal a series or two on the strength of their sensational goaltending (Stanley Cup odds courtesy Bet365):

Jonathan Quick, Los Angeles Kings (+1,400)

Quick is no stranger to the Stanley Cup grind, having led the Kings to an unlikely Stanley Cup championship in 2012 on the strength of some eye-popping play (16-4, 1.41 goals-against average, .946 save percentage). The 28 year old was nearly as good last year, posting a 1.86 GAA and a .934 save percentage, but didn't get much help from his offense. Yet, as Quick has proven in the past, he doesn't need much goal-scoring in front of him to steal a win. And that should scare his opponents, starting with the San Jose Sharks in Round 1.

Carey Price, Montreal Canadiens (+2,000)

Price has already faced big-game pressure this year, leading Team Canada to gold at the Sochi Olympics in February. He carried that momentum into the closing weeks of the season, going 8-3-0 with a 2.28 GAA, a .932 save percentage and two shutouts in 11 starts after the tournament. Price faces more pressure than most of his peers thanks to the rabid Montreal fan base, but he has already proven his big-game mettle and has certainly been playing well enough to do it again.

Sergei Bobrovsky, Columbus Blue Jackets (+5,000)

The Blue Jackets won't be favored in many categories ahead of their first-round matchup with the powerhouse Pittsburgh Penguins, but they should be able to measure up in the goaltending department. Bobrovsky had another terrific season and the defending Vezina Trophy winner, was especially dangerous down the stretch, going 5-1-1 with a 1.82 GAA and a .945 save percentage in April. With the Penguins' Marc-Andre Fleury a notoriously shaky goalie in the postseason, don't be surprised to see Columbus make things interesting thanks to the play between the pipes.

•Pirates LH Francisco Liriano (0-2, 4.00 ERA, WHIP: 1.222) - Liriano tossed six scoreless frames in his season debut on March 31 but has allowed four runs in each of his last two turns. The Dominican surrendered a total of three home runs in those two losses but continued to rack up a high strikeout total and has fanned 21 in 18 total innings. Liriano allowed one run over seven frames against the Reds to win the National League wild-card playoff game last October but was 0-3 with a 3.70 ERA in four regular-season starts versus the division rivals in 2013.

•Reds RH Johnny Cueto (0-2, 2.14 ERA, WHIP: 1.000) - Cueto is looking for a little run support after surrendering two or fewer runs in each of his first three starts without coming up with a win. The 28-year-old worked seven innings in each of those three turns and but has received a total of four runs of support. •Brewers RH Wily Peralta (1-0, 2.25 ERA, WHIP: 1.083) - Peralta allowed two runs (one earned) on four hits and over seven innings against the Pirates on Friday while flashing an improved slider. “It’s gotten better,” Peralta told mlb.com. “Early in spring training, that’s the pitch I was working on. Finally, I did it. I have confidence in it and throwing it whatever count I want to. That’s great for me.” Matt Carpenter is 5-for-9 with a home run against the 24-year-old, who is 1-3 with a 7.71 ERA in four career starts against the Cardinals.

In his season opener, he took a 2-1 lead into the eighth against the Cincinnati Reds before giving up a two-run homer, then got off the hook when Ike Davis hit a pinch-hit grand slam in the bottom of the ninth for a 6-3 victory. He took a 4-2 lead into the sixth of his latest start Friday night against the Los Angeles Angels, but was against victimized by a two-run homer and the Mets would go on to lose in the 11th. Gee was the starting pitcher in a 15-inning loss to the Diamondbacks last season, allowing two runs and six hits in seven innings.

•Diamondbacks RH Brandon McCarthy (0-2, 7.78 ERA, WHIP: 1.322) - The Diamondbacks have already sent one starter to the bullpen and McCarthy might not be far behind if he doesn’t figure things out. He has been pegged for at least five earned runs in each of his first three starts and has lost four straight decisions dating to last season. McCarthy made his only career start against the Mets last August, allowing two runs and six hits in seven innings, but taking the loss in the 4-1 defeat.

•Braves RH Julio Teheran (1-1, 2.84 ERA, WHIP: 1.368) - Teheran got a no-decision in his last outing, allowing two earned runs on 10 hits in six innings against Washington. Three unearned runs scored after an Uggla error would have ended the fifth inning, and Teheran only struck out one after fanning eight over 13 innings in his first two starts. He is 1-2 lifetime against the Phillies with a 5.79 ERA, that one victory coming in last year’s regular-season finale.

•Phillies LH Cliff Lee (2-1, 5.50 ERA, WHIP: 1.667) - Lee returned to form in his past two starts after opening the season by allowing eight earned runs in five innings. The 35-year-old scattered 10 hits but did not allow an earned run against Chicago on April 5 to pick up the victory, and took the loss Thursday against Milwaukee despite allowing three earned runs with eight strikeouts in six innings. The 13-year veteran went 3-2 against Atlanta last season and is 7-6 with a 2.80 ERA and 113 strikeouts in 99 2/3 innings lifetime against the Braves.

•Nationals RH Tanner Roark (1-0, 5.91 ERA, WHIP: 1.406) - Roark was sensational in his season debut - limiting the New York Mets to two runs over six innings - but couldn't carry that momentum over to his second turn. The 27-year-old surrendered a three-run homer to Ramiro Pena as part of a five-run Atlanta second inning but was spared his second career loss as the Nationals fought back to tie before eventually falling in extra innings. Roark has yet to allow a run in nine career frames against the Marlins.

•Marlins RH Jose Fernandez (2-1, 3.78 ERA, WHIP: 1.320) - Roark may need to remain perfect versus Miami to have any chance of beating Fernandez. The reigning National League Rookie of the Year has been completely unstoppable in his home stadium, posting an 11-0 record with a 1.14 ERA, a 0.85 WHIP and a .165 opposition batting average. That includes a pair of wins in his first two starts of 2014, outings in which he held Colorado and San Diego to one run while striking out 17 over 12 2/3 combined innings.

•Rockies LH Jorge De La Rosa (0-2, 9.69 ERA, WHIP: 1.463) - De La Rosa pitched 4 1/3 innings in each of his first three starts, with his last outing — a 6-5 loss at San Francisco on Friday — marred by Madison Bumgarner's grand slam in the fourth. The 33-year-old Mexican couldn't get on the same page with Wilin Rosario involving signals in his season debut and while Rosario wasn't behind the plate for his next two starts, he is expected to be against the Padres. De La Rosa is 7-2 with a 4.92 ERA and 87 strikeouts in 89 2/3 innings against San Diego.

•Padres RH Andrew Cashner (1-1, 1.29, WHIP: 0.810) - Cashner is 16-20 with a 3.40 ERA in his career, pretty solid numbers considering he's pitched for San Diego and the Chicago Cubs. The 6-6, 219-pound Conroe, Texas, native allowed only a flare single to Rajai Davis in the sixth inning and struck out 11 in a complete-game 6-0 victory over Detroit on Friday. Cashner is 0-3 in nine games (four starts) with a 7.16 ERA, 1.81 WHIP and .345 batting average against versus Colorado, but has kept Carlos Gonzalez (3-for-12) in check.

#913 LA DODGERS @ #914 SAN FRANCISCO - 10:15 PM
•Dodgers LH Paul Maholm (0-1, 8.10 ERA, WHIP: 1.642) - Maholm, who has pitched well in three relief appearances, is set to make his second start with the Dodgers waiting for ace Clayton Kershaw (back) to return. The 31-year-old allowed five runs on seven hits over 4 1/3 innings in a start against the Giants on April 5, dropping him to 2-4 with a 4.48 ERA in 11 career starts against San Francisco. Hunter Pence is 16-for-52 (.308) with two home runs against Maholm, who is 0-3 with a 5.79 ERA in six career starts at AT&T Park.

•Giants RH Ryan Vogelsong (0-0, 8.00 ERA, WHIP: 1.889) - Vogelsong struggled late in spring training and the results haven’t been much better in his first two starts. The 36-year-old has failed to pitch past the fifth inning in both outings, and he has allowed 14 hits in his first nine frames. Kemp is 7-for-22 with a home run and six RBIs against Vogelsong, who is 4-3 with a 4.15 ERA in 20 career appearances (11 starts) against the Dodgers, including a no-decision on April 4 when he yielded four runs over four innings.

Maddon said the 24-year-old threw the ball “extremely well” and was victimized by some poor luck. Odorizzi allowed one hit in 3 2/3 innings of relief against Baltimore in 2013, striking out Adam Jones twice in two at-bats.

•Orioles RH Miguel Gonzalez (0-1, 9.64 ERA, WHIP: 1.929) - Gonzalez had a rough outing in his first start but gave up three runs and seven hits over six innings without receiving a decision against the New York Yankees on Wednesday. The Mexican is coming off a solid 2013 season in which he went 11-8 with a 3.78 ERA. Gonzalez is 2-3 with a 3.94 ERA in eight career starts versus Tampa Bay, with Rays OF Desmond Jennings going 4-for-18 against him with three homers.

•Indians RH Zach McAllister (1-0, 2.31 ERA, WHIP: 1.285) - McAllister threw 70 of his 99 pitches for strikes (including first-pitch strikes to 20 of the 28 batters he faced) in last Wednesday’s 2-0 home win over the San Diego Padres. The 26-year-old allowed five hits, struck out seven and did not walk a batter over 7 2/3 innings after enduring an uneven four-inning outing in his season debut on April 2 against the Oakland Athletics. McAllister has enjoyed very little success in six career starts against Detroit, going 0-2 with a 4.85 ERA and 1.85 WHIP.

•Tigers RH Anibal Sanchez (0-0, 3.00 ERA, WHIP: 1.333) - After a rain delay cost Sanchez a chance at a win in his season debut on April 4, he lost a chance for another victory last Wednesday when closer Joe Nathan blew a save against the Los Angeles Dodgers. The AL ERA leader from a season ago, who needed 110 pitches to get through five innings, allowed three runs (one earned) on six hits and struck out six. Sanchez went 2-0 in three turns versus the Indians last season to improve to 4-1 with a 2.20 ERA against them in seven career outings.

•Mariners RH Felix Hernandez (3-0, 2.11 ERA, WHIP: 0.750) - Hernandez has allowed just 14 hits and two walks in his three outings. He struck out 11 without issuing a walk and yielded two runs and four hits in seven innings to defeat Oakland in his last start. Hernandez has experienced plenty of rough outings against the Rangers as his career record sits at 12-20 with a 4.18 ERA in 39 career starts.

•Rangers RH Yu Darvish (1-0, 0.00 ERA, WHIP: 0.667) - Darvish tossed seven scoreless innings to beat Tampa Bay in his first start and has struck out 15 and walked two in 15 frames. He was dealing with a cut on his thumb in his dominant outing against the Astros but still struck out nine without a walk. Darvish went 1-1 with a 2.66 ERA in three starts against Seattle last season and is 3-3 with a 4.78 ERA in seven career outings versus the Mariners.

•Royals RH Jeremy Guthrie (2-0, 3.55 ERA, WHIP: 1.263) - Guthrie retired the last 12 batters he faced after allowing one run and four hits in the first three innings of a 7-3 victory over Tampa Bay on April 9. The 35-year-old Roseburg, Ore., native is 22-15 since coming to Kansas City in 2012 after going 50-74 in five seasons with Baltimore and part of one in Colorado. Guthrie is 2-1 with a 5.00 ERA in four starts against Houston while getting rocked for six runs and eight hits in a 6-5 loss to Keuchel and the Astros on May 20 in his last outing against them.

•Astros LH Dallas Keuchel (1-1, 3.75 era, WHIP: 1.417) - Keuchel allowed a run and five hits in seven innings of Houston's 6-4 victory at Toronto on Friday for his second victory in his last 12 starts. The 26-year-old Tulsa, Okla., native was 6-10 with a 5.15 ERA in his first full season in 2013 and the Astros hope he emerges as a building block for the future in the rotation. Keuchel earned the victory in his only career start against the Royals despite allowing four runs, nine hits and four walks while striking out six in 6 2/3 innings.

•Blue Jays RH R.A. Dickey (1-2, 5.30 ERA, WHIP: 1.393) - Dickey has had an uneven start to 2014, looking brilliant against the New York Yankees on April 5 but struggling mightily in losses to the Tampa Bay Rays and Houston Astros. The 39-year-old failed to capitalize on the light-hitting Astros in his last outing, surrendering five runs on six hits - including a pair of home runs - over seven uninspiring innings. Dickey is 2-2 with a 6.11 ERA - his third-highest against any opponent - in 35 1/3 innings versus the Twins.

•Twins RH Mike Pelfrey (0-2, 7.84 ERA, WHIP: 1.839) - Pelfrey's days in the Minnesota rotation may be numbered following his latest sub-par performance, surrendering six runs on nine hits while issuing four walks over five innings in a 6-1 loss to Oakland. The 30-year-old has walked seven batters and allowed four home runs over 10 1/3 innings, failing to bounce back from a rough 2013 season that saw him go 5-13 with a 5.19 ERA. One of those victories did, however, come against the Blue Jays.

•Red Sox RH Clay Buchholz (0-1, 6.97 ERA, WHIP: 1.936) - Buchholz escaped a loss despite getting lit up for six runs and 13 hits in his first turn but could not avoid it a second time as he surrendered four runs - two earned - over six innings at New York over the weekend. That one loss matches the total from last season for the 29-year-old, though he was more impressive against the Yankees and had more velocity on his fastball. Buchholz made one start in Chicago last season and held the White Sox to one run and five hits over seven frames to pick up a win.

•White Sox LH John Danks (1-0, 4.15 ERA, WHIP: 1.308) - Danks put up a pair of quality starts in his first two turns and earned his first win by holding Cleveland to three runs over six innings last week. The Texas native cut his walk total down to two after issuing four free passes in his first outing. Danks made one start against Boston last season and was knocked around for six runs - five earned - on 11 hits in five innings to suffer the loss.

•Athletics LH Tommy Milone (0-1, 5.40 ERA, WHIP: 2.000) - Milone gets his second start after surrendering five runs (three earned) over five innings in a loss at Seattle last Friday. The left-hander is 5-2 with a 4.35 ERA lifetime versus Los Angeles, more wins than he has against any other team, although Howie Kendrick is 9-for-20 with two homers against him. Milone won six of his final eight decisions last season – two against the Angels.

•Angels LH Tyler Skaggs (1-0, 2.40 ERA, WHIP: 0.933) - Skaggs was outstanding in his Angels debut against Houston before yielding four runs and nine hits against the New York Mets on Friday. The 22-year-old was re-acquired from Arizona during the offseason in the Mark Trumbo trade after striking out 57 in 68 innings over two years. Skaggs was picked by the Angels in the first round of the 2009 draft and traded to Arizona in a deal for Dan Haren.

•Cubs RH Jason Hammel (2-0, 2.68 ERA, WHIP: 0.512) - Hammel allowed three hits - all home runs - in seven innings of a 7-5 victory over the Pirates on April 9 after winning at Pittsburgh in his Chicago debut April 3. The 31-year-old Greenville, S.C., native has plenty of experience pitching against New York while with Tampa Bay and Baltimore, going 3-3 with a 5.17 ERA in 17 games (11 starts), and is 1-1 with a 2.65 ERA in three starts at the new Yankee Stadium. Kelly Johnson homered twice in 27 at-bats while Ichiro Suzuki is 8-for-20 against Hammel.

•Yankees RH Masahiro Tanaka (1-0, 3.21 ERA, WHIP: 1.000) - Tanaka yielded all six of his runs in the first two innings - a three-run homer on a hanging slider by Jonathan Schoop while receiving a no-decision in a 5-4 loss to Baltimore on April 9 and the others in a 7-3 victory at Toronto on April 4 in his major league debut. "If you look at the first two starts, the beginning of the game, I'm missing my spots and giving up runs," Tanaka told reporters through an interpreter. "I need to make my adjustments, try not to do that." Tanaka, who received a seven-year contract worth $155 million from the Yankees, was 24-0 with a 1.27 ERA in Japan last year and hasn't lost in 28 decisions since Aug. 19, 2012.

•Cubs LH Travis Wood (0-1, 2.92 ERA, WHIP: 1.138) - Wood matched a career high with nine strikeouts over six innings and left with a 4-0 lead against Pittsburgh in a 5-4 loss April 10. The 27-year-old Little Rock, Ark., native, who lost in his only start against New York in 2011, has lowered his ERA and WHIP each of the last three years while continuing to show he's a key piece to the Cubs' rebuilding process. The Yankees' Carlos Beltran (6-for-20, home run, two doubles) has the most experience against Wood from his National League days.

•Yankees RH Michael Pineda (1-1, 1.50 ERA, WHIP: 0.917) - When last seen, Pineda had a foreign substance on his hand which clearly was picked up on television, but since the opponent - Boston - didn't protest, it was never questioned by the umpires. The 25-year-old Dominican held the Red Sox to one run and four hits while striking out seven in six strong innings of a 4-1 victory Thursday, his second quality start to begin 2014 after last pitching in the majors in 2011 because of arm problems. Pineda never has faced the Cubs.
