The brainchild of a young Ford executive named Lee Iacocca in the early 1960s, the Ford Mustang was conceived as a compact car with style and flair. Small, sporty and offered with V8 power, the Mustang blazed a trail for a new type of automobile, the pony car. The Mustang debuted at the World's Fair in New York fifty years ago, on April 17, 1964. The design was an instant hit with the public, making Mustang one of the most successful product launches of all time. Over the years, Ford's iconic thoroughbred has remained a uniquely American car that continues to offer power and panache. Let's look at some favorites through the years.

After watching a hard fought HAYDEN FRY coached Smu Mustangs team give Michigan all they could handle, Lee Iacocca walked into the SMU lockerroom after the game and stated to coach FRY that he and his board would be naming a new car in their honor..................the Ford MUSTANG.

Just curious, I'm fairly young (will only be able to say that for so long) so I didn't grow up when Mustangs were considered "the" muscle car or considered "the" cool car to have.

But what is the general consensus of Mustangs now in your area? I ask because around here (the south), opinions of them differ wildly. Overall they seem to be still pretty popular just based on the number you see on the road. But there are a lot of people that look down on them and even consider them a little trashy. Not sure when or how that started but was curious if other areas looked at them similarly?

as regular Ford Mustangs the 67-68 and 69-70 are the only years that rock

the first 2 years are ugly rims and paint really can't help them much

71-73 long nose the II and the box years really come on now

I personally think they're junk, not to mention slow and not a real sports car( if burnouts are your thing, I guess). No matter what you do to them, they all sound the same. They sell well, but that doesn't mean they're good cars. The Ford truck is apparently the best selling truck of all time, but far from the best truck, IMO of course.

I wouldn't own one if you gave it to me, but they have quite a following. That can't be denied.

Well for you Younger folk .... Back in the day they were Very Cool. IMHO the Shelby GT500 was the best. even the 65 GT350 was nice.
To me Today's Mustangs are not the same.

as far as Fast... we had plenty of Fast cars back then. Tons of Hot Rods. I still liked the Charger ( back then ) even the Vets were nicer.
