A day after commenting in the negative when asked if he was distracted or worried about the alleged death threats facing Dodgers outfielder Yasiel Puig after a magazine article detailing his escape from Cuba surfaced, manager Don Mattingly is changing his tune.

Mattingly backs Puig, says outfielder hasn't changed a bit.

According to reports, Puig owes 20 percent of all his baseball earnings to a Miami businessman and a connected criminal who played a role in his harrowing journey from Cuba to the United States.

"If you care about Yasiel, you worry about it," Mattingly said. "There's some serious stuff that he has to deal with. I think you have to worry about it if you care about him as a person. You worry about what he's going through."

Mattingly also insinuated he wasn't aware of any of this drama when he took over the Dodgers' clubhouse, and couldn't say whether L.A. ownership knew about Puig's unseemly connections.

"If it was news to anyone above me, I don't know that, but it was definitely news to me," Mattingly said. "I think it was news to anybody in our clubhouse. I know a lot of people check in on Yasiel that know a lot more than I do. I'm the manager of the baseball team. I'm not running the whole organization. I'm not the president or ownership."

Puig, who has been controversial since he entered the league for other issues that seem PG-rated compared to this mess, has clammed up on the topic. He released a prepared statement that read, "I'm represented on this matter, and I'm only focused on being a productive teammate and helping the Dodgers win games."

After a win over the San Francisco Giants on Thursday night, Puig did address the matter very briefly.

"I feel normal," Puig said. "I'm focusing on baseball and I'm giving my best for my team so things go well on the field with the preparation I've had, so those things that are happening don't torment me." He was 1-for-4 in the game with a strikeout, and is hitting .250 with one home run and five RBIs on the year.

There was a big feature on espn about it last night. One of the middlemen gut cut off from money and is raising a stink. Obviously the MLB doesn't want to deal with this problem in the future with these street agents pimping out talent for money. The Puid deal is insane, like 20% of his contract was to go to these agents.

Well, one thing is for sure, being Cuba and all, Puig does have to worry about family members that still live there. This Miami "business man" criminal is probably getting greedy and wants more from Puig. Find it hard to believe this guy would be able to threaten Puig's life and get away with it here in the States but maybe he has the power and connections to make sure Puig's family back in Cuba isn't so safe. Like Defying said, need more info on this matter.

When Jesse Ventura was a wrestler he was interviewed and asked about death threats phoned in about him. He said people who kill people don't give a warning ahead of time.

Only Dodger fans would want to kill Puig. He will kill their team sooner or later with his self-centered foolishness.

Due to his demeanor.... he might very well get sucker punched out cold by a teammate.

Is he really causing that much turmoil with the team or are you just referring to his play like when he hits the ball and runs for an extra base when he clearly shouldn't?

Has to be a problem. His half-assed and disrespectful approach to baseball is disgraceful. Yea, he is young, foreign, and may have faced some challenges..... But if he can't learn a few basic things (or won't try).... watch..... When they feel like they have enough of the roster healthy.... they will start to quietly shop him around.

Or maybe I am out of touch. Maybe they want to attract more gang banging turds to the ballpark and he is the perfect draw.

Dodger brass do not know how to handle him....Mattingly hates him......he would be better off on another team that would take the time to teach him the game....
