Western Conference Playoffs - Round #1

#717 MEMPHIS @ #718 OKLAHOMA CITY
(TV: 8:00 PM EST, TNT, FSN Memphis, FSN Oklahoma -Thunder -7, Total: 189.5) - The Oklahoma City Thunder were the only home team to win on Saturday’s first day of the NBA playoffs and seek to take a 2-0 lead when they host the Memphis Grizzlies on Monday in the best-of-seven Western Conference series. Oklahoma City jumped out to a big lead and survived a second-half surge by Memphis before using a strong finishing kick to record a 100-86 victory. Forward Kevin Durant started the series strong with 33 points, eight rebounds and seven assists.

Memphis needs better performances from big men Zach Randolph and Marc Gasol, who were a combined 14-of-40 from the field in the opener. Randolph had 21 points and 11 rebounds but was just 7-of-21 shooting and also missed five free throws while Gasol (16 points) was mostly a nonfactor while going 7-of-19 from the field. Oklahoma City’s bench didn’t have a double-digit performer but received decent contributions from guard Reggie Jackson (nine points, eight rebounds, four assists), forward Caron Butler (nine points, five rebounds) and center Steven Adams (three blocks). The Grizzlies got 13 points off the bench from guard Tony Allen but forward Mike Miller had just three points on 1-of-6 shooting.

•ABOUT THE GRIZZLIES (50-33 SU, 36-44-3 ATS): Memphis dominated the first 15-plus minutes of the second half as it cut a 22-point halftime deficit to two early in the fourth quarter. But a poor first half in which it shot just 25 percent from the field crippled matters from the outset. “We’ve got to make adjustments to get off to a better start,” Randolph told reporters. “We can’t exert so much energy trying to come back from 20 points. It’s the first game. We’ve got to stick together. We’ve been here before. We know what we’ve got to do and come out and be ready for Monday.”

•ABOUT THE THUNDER (60-23 SU, 44-37-2 ATS): Point guard Russell Westbrook missed the second-round series in which Memphis disposed of Oklahoma City in five games last season and was intent on making a difference in the opener. Westbrook scored 16 of his 23 points in the first half when the Thunder led by as many 25 points and finished with 10 rebounds. He was displeased with his third-quarter performance but was back on his game in the fourth when Oklahoma City reasserted control. “We did a great job of just coming out and hitting them first,” Westbrook told reporters. “They’re a physical team and we did a great job of going by our game plan.”

•PREGAME NOTES: The Thunder blocked 10 shots in Game #1, led by four from F Serge Ibaka.... Grizzlies F Tayshaun Prince played just four minutes in the opener due to a stomach virus and hopes to play in Game #2.... Durant has scored 30 or more points 23 times during the postseason.... The Grizzlies are 55-37 versus the spread (59.7%) when playing against a team with a winning record over the last two seasons.... The Thunder are 14-3 against the spread (82.3%) versus horrible foul drawing teams - attempting less than 21 free throws/game this season.

#719 GOLDEN STATE @ #720 LA CLIPPERS
(TV: 10:30 PM EST, TNT, CSN Bay Area Golden State, Prime Ticket Los Angeles - Line: Clippers -8, Total: 212) - The Los Angeles Clippers surrendered homecourt advantage by failing to execute down the stretch in Game #1. The Clippers will attempt to clean up those mistakes and keep the Golden State Warriors from gaining a commanding lead in the best-of-seven Western Conference series when they host Game #2 on Monday. Los Angeles managed to contain Stephen Curry in Game #1 but Blake Griffin battled foul trouble and was outplayed by David Lee.

Clippers star Chris Paul committed a turnover and missed two free throws down the stretch in Game #1 and Darren Collison fumbled the ball out of bounds down by three with the final seconds ticking away as Golden State claimed a 109-105 victory. The animosity between the two Pacific Division rivals was the big story before the series and both clubs battled foul trouble in Game #1, with Griffin joining Warriors forward Andre Iguodala in watching the final seconds from the bench after fouling out. Golden State matched a franchise record with 24 road wins during the regular season and was not intimidated by the hostile surroundings in the first-round opener.

•ABOUT THE WARRIORS (52-31 SU, 42-38-3 ATS): Golden State committed 23 turnovers and squandered an 11-point fourth-quarter lead but held the Clippers scoreless over the final 1:30 to lock up the win. Curry was hounded the entire game and finished with 14 points but Harrison Barnes and Draymond Green both hit big shots and Klay Thompson went for 22 points. “We got great shooting but we made great decisions out of it,” coach Mark Jackson told reporters. “They made a decision of trying to get the ball out of (Curry’s) hands by the way they were defending pick-and-rolls. We were patient enough to make the proper plays.” The Warriors are without center Andrew Bogut (broken rib) in the series but still managed a 48-42 advantage on the glass as Lee grabbed 13 boards.

•ABOUT THE CLIPPERS (57-26 SU, 46-36-1 ATS): Griffin scored 16 points in only 19 minutes and fouled out on a loose ball call in the final minute as the referees whistled a total of 51 fouls. “We didn’t play very well,” coach Doc Rivers told reporters. “We were in foul trouble most of the game.... I thought we played hard and we came to win the game, but I thought there were a lot of times where we lost our trust in as far as what we were doing. We made too many mistakes to win the game.” Paul hit a pair of big 3-pointers to get Los Angeles back into the game late in the fourth but committed six turnovers and five fouls while trying to contain Curry and Thompson.

•PREGAME NOTES: Clippers C DeAndre Jordan collected 14 rebounds and five blocks in Game #1.... Golden State beat No. 3 seed Denver in the first round last season after losing Game #1 on the road....
