I saw a dude wearing a pair of these on an episode of Silicon Valley. Just wondering if anybody had a pair, and how they feel about them?

</figure>Most trainers who work in a gym have seen an increase of people wearing the 5-finger shoes. It seems very popular with the body building crew and the person who sits on the recumbent bike. But surprisingly, this shoe that reminds me of an Aquaman costume has had growing double-digit sales since early 2010 when the shoe became a trend.
<!--more-->Before this shoe started selling out at $80 a pair, the barefoot movement happened. In fact, I can remember presenting at an ECA fitness conference in 2006 when a couple people were lecturing on the benefits of barefoot training. As a martial artist who trained 3/4 of my years barefoot while kicking, jumping and running sprints, I thought the buzz was ridiculous. Although I felt that barefoot training was fine for some, I hardly thought it was the most innovative theory or relevant training adaptation.
Now, I have mentioned the 5-finger shoe alongside barefoot training. Yes, I realize they are two different things. But the question I want to answer is : Is it better to run barefoot or in a 5-finger shoe than our running shoe? Are these less supportive options really better for your feet and body?
ACE Exercise Physiologist Pete McCall also contemplated this question and decided to do a study of runners in running shoes, 5-finger shoes and barefoot. First, you have to ask how is ‘better’ being evaluated. The ACE study essentially looked at injury potential. Runners do something called heel striking. As they make contact with the pavement, their heel strikes with a specific force. Those with a harder heel strike are more likely to generally develop chronic injuries. This was one very important observation that was recorded on all subjects (they used 3-D motion analysis).
The results were fairly predictable. About 50% of the subjects that used the barefoot or 5-finger shoes changed their gate from a heel strike pattern to a forefoot pattern. A forefoot pattern is when the area around the ball of the foot hits the pavement first. This is a healthier stride when you do not have the protection and cushion offered in a running shoe to protect your lower limb. The other 50% simply followed their natural stride, which included heel striking. The ACE research team concluded without changing the place of impact on the foot, it is likely chronic injuries of the foot, possibly shin, knee and hip will develop.
So the recommendation is if you are going to toss the running shoes for the latest color 5-finger shoe or save the $80 all together, you may want to first train your body to change the way you run. Practice running with the ball of your foot contacting the ground first. Keep in mind, this type of change is not as simple as changing your hair. It requires a lot of mental focus and training. If you are going to give it a try, be aware of more than the forefoot strike, but also breathing properly, using your arms and taking a consistent stride that allows you to land squarely and properly on the ball of your foot.

I can see how it might help the average person but i'm slightly flat-footed and instead of stepping heel to ball , i step ball to heel and it would not be good for my pinky toe.

Did you ever get any blistering between the toes? Seems like you would if you did a lot of jogging and sweating in them.

those look horrible. people that lift in them have no clue. drop a hundy on that pinky toe, and you'll learn.

I've worn NB Minimus in the past, and I recently bot a pair of nike free flyknits-these are the greatest running shoe I've probably ever worn. These you wear sockless as well...i'm only about a month into them, but so far no blisters and no funk.
I've also got the NB 990 and some pearl izumi's...but these flyknit's are ridiculous.

This. The shoes mentioned above achieve the same minimalist concept without looking like a complete jack wagon.

Use mine for some light hiking and dog walking. They are pretty comfortable and I haven't had any blister problems. I was worried about the funk and got a couple pair of toe socks, so I never wear them w/o socks and they have no funk at all.

I haven't but also don't wear them all that regularly...mostly just for an occasional insanity workout or a hike with my dogs....did notice that some dirt comes through when hiking on a dusty trail.

i will break it down for you later today Scott, got to finish some work for a call at 10:30 and then 11 and then will respond....definitely more good than bad...she is perfect size so you can still park it in front of your house on the street or at a meter downtown by staples center to tailgate for example, but still has bathroom, shower, kitchen, bed, power, etc...

If you bought these clown shoes for $100, the rate they were going, you may be able to get $94 of it back...

Vibram USA Inc., maker of those glovelike FiveFingers running shoes with separate spaces for each toe, has moved to settle a lawsuit alleging it overstated the shoes' health benefits.
The privately held company offered to pay a total of $3.75 million to people who bought the shoes and said it would stop making health claims in its advertisements.
The class-action plaintiffs in the suit, which was filed in the U.S. District Court in Massachusetts, argued that Vibram was able to charge nearly $100 a pair for the shoes on the basis of unsubstantiated claims that they strengthen muscles and prevent injury.

The proposed settlement was filed last week and is awaiting approval from the court.
If approved, customers who bought Vibram shoes as far back as March 2009 could be eligible for a refund of as much as $94 for every pair they purchased, according to the court filing. More than two dozen models of Vibram shoes would qualify.

In an interview, Vibram USA Chief Executive Mike Gionfriddo said the company proposed the settlement to avoid the costs of prolonged litigation.
"We continue to expressly deny the allegations in the suit," he said.
The proposed settlement comes as sales of minimalist running shoes, such as those made by Vibram, are tanking. The category spiked in popularity around the turn of the decade amid claims that running barefoot was better for the body.
Minimalist shoes were the only segment in the $7 billion running-shoe industry to post a decline in 2013, with sales falling by one-third, according to data tracker SportsOneSource.

The suit against Vibram is the latest dust-up involving shoe-related health claims. In 2012, Skechers USA Inc. SKX +2.90% was ordered to pay the Federal Trade Commission $40 million to settle false-advertising claims regarding its rocking-sole shoes that purportedly helped consumers tone muscles and lose weight.

Skechers didn't immediately respond to a request for comment. At the time of the settlement, Skechers denied the allegations.
