A Minnesota man who gunned down two teens who broke into his home was found guilty of murdering the unarmed intruders he likened to “vermin.”
A jury took just three hours Tuesday afternoon to find Byron Smith, 65, guilty of the Thanksgiving Day 2012 slayings of Haile Kifer, 18, and Nick Brady, 17. Audio clips of the shootings were captured by a recording system the man had rigged up to capture the burglars in the act.
The Little Falls jury of six men and six women, in a small town 100 miles northwest of Minneapolis along the Mississippi River, found Smith guilty of premeditated first-degree murder and second-degree murder in the deaths of the two teens.

During closing arguments Tuesday, prosecutor Pete Orput likened the killings to deer hunting from a tree stand as he outlined the preparations Smith took before slaying the teens: he stocked up on water, snacks, extra ammo, a book and a tarp in his basement, and even moved his truck away from his home to make it appear he was away.
As Orput showed the courtroom a picture of the chair where Smith waited, he said, “That’s the deer stand, right there.”

The audio recordings, taken from his bugged basement, seemed to hurt the man’s case. He appeared to take pleasure in the murders, prosecutors contended.
A 15-minute clip of the shooting includes the sounds of the teens getting gunned down and Smith dragging their bodies in a tarp to keep their blood from staining his carpet.

You never want to see kids killed, especially after seeing those pics above.

But they were in the wrong.

If he really wanted to catch them in this way, he should have just shot them in the legs or something.

Horrible to say I know, but if he had done that he would likely be a free man, and better yet, those kids would still be alive...

^ i agree with this to a certain extent.....a warning shot would have sufficed though instead of anywhere on the body. I mean...someone can get shot in the legs and hit that artery that runs through it ( the largest in the body ) and they would have bled out

The guy waited in his basement with water and energy bars. I hope he rots in hell. Kids are kids, and I am sure most of us look back to when we were 17 or 18 and shake our heads. He could have easily called the cops the moment he heard something, or set up a video surveillance. Being judge, jury and executioner is not his job.

I'm usually a "defend your home at all costs" guy but this guy wasn't just trying to protect his home. He literally executed them.

It said in another article that he had them over one time for dinner.

What I want to know is how did he know they would be coming to rob him that day? Or did he wait every day just in case.

It also says he parks his car three blocks away to give the appearance that he wasn't home.

That's what I am wondering too???

This is a disturbing case and based on what I've seen I would have voted him guilty.

I just wanted to add that it is never, ever a good idea to fire a "warning shot" as such actions are illegal in many states. Prosecutors are also unlikely to view you with any sympathy at all if you merely injure someone (intentionally or not) with a firearm.

The fact of the matter is that if you're going to pull and fire a weapon, you need to have reasonable fear of death or serious bodily injury.

Guy deserves everything he gets. Fully understand defending your home but to shoot someone in the head after they have already been shot is beyond comprehension.

The defense attorney actually had the nerve to compare these kids to a bad guy in a horror movie saying the defendant was afraid they'd get up and attack him hence the reason he shot them again and again.

I just listened to it King and I change my mind.

It was very disturbing and clear what he intended to do.

What the heck makes him think he would get a pass on this???

He sounds mental...

He's gotta be mental. He says he wrapped them up in a tarp. Thanksgiving was the next day so he wait to call the cops until Friday. He mentioned it to a neighbor like he had done nothing wrong.

They were cousins.

They found evidence on the guy's car of other burglaries in the neighborhood.

My thoughts exactly.....cold blooded.
I hope they put him in general population in a real prison.

Where are the posters who will say if the kids were black the old man would have got off?
