Cleveland owner Jimmy Haslam says the Browns have told Johnny Manziel to start acting "like a backup quarterback."

Haslam praised Manziel for being an "ultracompetitor" but reiterated that Brian Hoyer is the team's starting quarterback and Manziel will have to beat out the veteran in training camp. Haslam made it clear that Manziel "is not the starter. Johnny's the backup."

Cmonnnn get real...... Even with his legs alone he's better than what you've already got Cleveland.

Throw this guy into the fire and see what you've got in 2,3,4 years and you know whether to keep him or cut your losses...

Once Hoyer starts sucking in a game the fans will be yelling for Manziel. Hoyer is in a no-win situation, he won't be allowed to make very many mistakes otherwise the Manziel chant will start up. Soon enough Hoyer will be sidelined.

That's too bad, but you are probably correct. I only like when that happens to the J-E-T-S.

In reality, they probably should calm him down a little and tell him that he is taking the Aaron Rogers approach. Maybe year 2 he can try to beat the Veteran out of the job. It will do him and the organization a ton of good.

Browns doing brown things. Kill the buzz early, who'd want excited fans over your shitty franchise.

He 'll likely backup, but Jesus this franchise sucks the life out of everything. At least let the football people make the statements about this stuff.

Even Johnny Manziel can't make the Browns good. He should be happy he'll be the backup.

Brian Hoyer is a winner believe it or not. He just needs a legitimate chance. He was showing what he could do before he got hurt.

exactly.. coach is covering his ass from being fired too.. blame it on hoyer and then put in manziel whenever the fire gets hot.. sucks for fans until it happens, but up until then he is free-rolling that cleveland can compete prior to Manziel taking the field.

Jerry Jones Syndrome is becoming a epidemic

why would an owner say this? why should an owner say this? is he trying to suppress the kid's confidence?

STFU and let the coaches you hired make that decision when the decision needs to be made

I know I'm gonna be called crazy, but I think Connor Shaw has something to say about that backup spot as well.

Manziel surely better watch and learn his work ethic and field IQ. This boy plays hard, and is very smart with the football. Better take some notes, Johnny.

GOOD CALL HOpEFULLY:

Hoyer threw a 51-yard touchdown pass to Jordan Cameron and improved to 6-2 as Cleveland's starter as the surprising Browns (3-2) beat the Steelers for just the third time in 23 games. Cleveland hadn't beaten Pittsburgh so soundly since a 51-0 shutout in 1989.

Hoyer, the hometown kid quickly turning into a hero, ran off the field to loud cheers and exited near a banner that read: ''This Is Hoyer Country.''
And it's only growing.
''I think the last time the Browns beat the Steelers, I was the backup quarterback for the Steelers that day,'' said Hoyer, referring to Cleveland's win on Nov. 25, 2012.
