Odds are it's just an idiot that plans on using your card and wouldn't even know how to truly steal an identity.

Besides the obvious like canceling all your cards, it would probably be worthwhile to sign up for one of those identity theft monitoring services. Then you would at least get a heads up if all the sudden "you" applied for a loan or credit card or anything else fishy. The nominal cost would be worth your peace of mind.

It's a little late, but you never should carry your SS card with you. This is the one thing you DON'T want stolen. You can call your credit card companies. But now you could have somebody who might try to steal your identification. And that can be a real pain in the ass.

Yea man...First time in my life it's been in my wallet and thats the day I decide to lose it. Do you recommend signing up for that service you mentioned? It would be nice to have this burden off my mind. Thanks again for the feedback.

First thing I would do is call the Social Security office tomorrow morning and see if they can give you any sound advice on what to do next.

Do you know where the charge was? It wouldn't surprise me if it was a gas station. Seems to be the most common thing thieves do when they get a hold of credit cards is fill up with gas.

I noticed this as well....don't most gas stations have cameras that can either record a picture of someone swiping a card? Or if not then something that can make out the plate of the car being fueled?

In theory, yes but I seriously doubt many gas stations/credit card companies/police officers will actually bother doing that level of "investigation" for a credit card charge. They absolutely should but generally they will not.

I had a a sibling who had their credit card number stolen somehow. The thief went so far as to pay his own cell phone bill and even his tuition at a small college. Of course on the credit card bill, all we could see was the charge to AT&T and the random school. We called both AT&T and the school and neither would release information on the account without a subpoena or something equivalent. Long story short, neither police office really cared and even my sibling's credit card company who was fraudulently charged several thousand dollars didn't care. They seemed to be ok just writing it off instead of actually pursuing the thief.

Im guessing that's pretty common and one of the main reasons identity theft is so prevalent nowadays.
