The Boston Red Sox have signed shortstop Stephen Drew to a one-year $10M deal, according to FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal.

The amount is prorated from the $14M qualifying offer the Red Sox extended to Drew during the offseason, according to sources. Drew will be exempt from a qualifying offer at the end of the year.

Drew played 124 games for the Red Sox last season, but was unable to come to terms on a new deal with the team and tested free-agency. No teams bit and now he rejoins the defending World Series champion Red Sox, who at 20-23 are off to a sluggish start to the season.

Ken Rosenthal @Ken_Rosenthal Follow Again, by signing mid-season, Drew exempt from qualifying offer at end of year. Getting $10M (pro-rated $14M QO), per @joelsherman.

#RedSox do not get pick they would have received if Drew had signed elsewhere before draft. But that wasn’t happening and now they get Drew.

Ken Rosenthal @Ken_Rosenthal Follow Drew will NOT be in uniform for #RedSox tonight but will be at Fenway.

nobody wanted him because they would have had to surrender a first round draft pick. The thinking was that teams were going to wait until after the draft to do something but looks like Sox pulled the trigger early

this still doesn't address our need for a #5 hitter and probably spells the end of the Will Middlebrooks era in Boston.
