Truck with 16-20 million bees overturns on I95

The ramp from northbound Del. 896 to northbound I-95 near Newark reopened about 6:50 a.m. Wednesday, more than 12 hours after it was closed when a tractor-trailer crashed and released its cargo of live bees -- an estimated 16 to 20 million of them.

The flatbed tractor-trailer was hauling 460 hives of honeybees from Florida to Maine when the load shifted about 6:10 p.m. on the Del. 896 on-ramp to northbound I-95, overturning onto the guard rail, Shavack said.

The two passengers, men ages 24 from Miami and 25 from Hialeah, Florida, were taken by ambulance to Christiana Hospital, Shavack said. He said both passengers suffered 50-100 stings but he had no update on their treatment Wednesday morning.

Nearly an hour after the truck failed to negotiate the on-ramp curve, Shavack said bee swarms were so massive, "we can't even get close to the truck right now."

I see something about bees on Netflix called More than Honey. Interesting stuff about bees.

Out of all the bees the african bees are the most resistant to disease. Bee farmers are using them more and more.

Bees are responsible for pollination of 90% of plants.

No bees = 90% less people.

Most people call wasps and hornets bees. They're not, wasps and hornets are mean critters. Bumble bees and honey bees are not nearly aggressive. If you have bees around you your first instinct is to swat at them. That's what pisses them off, if you stay calm and maintain good vibes with the bees, you shouldn't get stung unless they're disturbed by you/something.

I dont know the answer but wouldn't you think without bees we wouldnt be that much worse off....

What kind of plants do they help pollinate and how essential are those plants to our existence?

I am sure some have seen the video from Florida along time ago that showed a construction worker that went to a house for demolition and he took his machine and intentionally rammed a house...The result? Apparently a colony of bees had established their residence in said house. He died from literally thousands of bee stings as they all stormed him. He didn't have any anti- bee equipment on as it was unexpected. Horrible way to go.

i admit I didn't read up on this. I don't even know how important plants are to our existence... I assume farmers would still do all the fruits and veggies for us... I assume all the trees and grass will give us our oxygen and I figure they don't use bees. Everything else is just looks. I'm okay with 40 less types of flowers and weeds

Bees and flowers have a symbiotic relationship. The bees are dependent on the flowers for food and the flowers need the bees to aid in pollination. Both help the other to survive and reproduce.

Bees have a honey sack that holds the nectar that is taken from the flower. Back at the hive, the nectar is regurgitated and placed into the honeycomb cells. Nectar is the bees' source of carbohydrates.

Pollen is collected at the same time. It is picked up when the hair on the bees' bodies rubs the male anthers of the flowers and is gathered into pollen sacks on the insect's legs. Pollen, rich in amino acids, is fed to the developing larvae back at the hive.

- Not all of the pollen makes it back to the hive. Since the bees visit one flower after another, pollen is rubbed off on the female portion, the pistil, of the next flower visited. Bees revisit the same flowers until the nectar is gone, increasing chances of pollination.

I understand 40 was less....i have more than 40 types of weeds in my yard alone.

I was never arguing saying that bees aren't important....i just wanted someone to help me understand why...."the list goes on and on"...what list? At least BAS tried but that doesn't convince me as much.

now erosion sounds important but I don't understand how or the correlation....(honestly, all i figured we benefit from the plants were food and oxygen...but i'm no scientist)
