[h=1]No... Put away the champagne... Not Romo...

Cowboys' Orton ready to walk away from millions to retire?[/h]
The Dallas Cowboys want Kyle Orton to remain with the team this upcoming season and pay him $3.25 million; however the backup quarterback has reportedly said he wants to retire, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

The question is; can Orton afford to retire now?

Orton, who is reportedly not showing up to OTAs, would be forced to pay back $3 million of the $5 million signing bonus money he collected two years ago when signing with the Cowboys. If losing $3 million wasn't incentive for Orton to stay in Dallas, the backup quarterback would also miss out on his salary of $3.25 million for the '14 season.

While it would certainly be an expensive choice, Orton is certainly within his rights to retire from the NFL, even if that means starting his post-playing career in a $6.25 million hole, but the Cowboys are hoping the money will help lure Tony Romo's backup to return for one more season.

If Orton chooses to leave the game, the Cowboys will turn toward former Cleveland Brown quarterback Brandon Weeden to take over the backup duties in Dallas.

What an idiot. He'd regret "retiring" early the rest of his life. Not just financially, but looking back saying "Man, I wish I could have just one more season."

Not quite the same, but I didn't play HS football my senior year of HS and I still regret that decision (I was a lifeguard in Jax Beach and was getting too much pussy and getting high to worry about football!).

Whenever any possible outcome of a decision you are weighing involves "paying back $3 million" you are safe to strike that course of action off the list.

My goodness, how bad can being the backup be?

He already has millions so an extra 3.5 mill is not as enticing to him as it is to us.

He won't have that many "millions" after repaying the advance.

He was already retired and got picked up by the Cowboys late in the season last year. Didn't he like donate his one game paycheck to some charity or school?

You're kidding right? This neck-bearded moron will be broke at age 40 and working a 50k/yr job, probably willing to eat dog turds 40 hours a week for 3.5M

Wow you gotta keep playing. Being backup QB is like the best job in the world.

When he took that Dallas contract though I remember thinking he probably didn't love football and just happened to be very good at it. Then probably tolerated it because he was pretty good. He could've easily gone to a team that year that would've given him a better chance to start.

I don't think he ever got the "big" payday that most upper echelon QBs get. He may have "millions"...but it may be more like $3-6 million...if that. He'd be NUTS to give up that kind of money. It's one season. He'll probably not take one snap.

The Guy went to Purdue for 4 years and probably graduated. He most likely invested his monies wisely and is now sitting pretty. I think some of you guys are putting him on the same level as a Vince Young, who probably never attended class and had an Entourage of at least 10.
