Balmer, who was chief executive of Microsoft for 14 years, was chosen over competitors that included Los Angeles-based investors Tony Ressler and Steve Karsh and a group that included David Geffen and executives from the Guggenheim Group, the Chicago-based owner of the Los Angeles Dodgers.

</aside>A person with knowledge of the negotiations said the Geffen group bid $1.6 billion and Ressler at $1.2 billion.

The sale price is almost four times the highest previous NBA franchise sale price -- the $550 million paid earlier this month for the Milwaukee Bucks. It is second only to the Dodgers 2012 sale for $2.1 billion as the highest price for any sports team in North America.

The prospective sale by Clippers co-owner Shelly Sterling comes five days ahead of an NBA hearing to oust her family from ownership following a controversy in which Donald Sterling insulted African-Americans in a secret audio recording.

The tentative deal still must receive the blessing of her husband, Donald Sterling, who has waxed and waned on the question of whether he would allow his wife to sell the team he has controlled for more than three decades.

The deal also needs the eventual approval of 29 other NBA owners, but is expected to clear that hurdle as long as Ballmer reaffirms his pledge to keep the team in Los Angeles and not move it to home in Seattle.

</aside>Ballmer, 58, left the software giant in February and has an estimated net worth of $20 billion. Unlike other bidders, he did not immediately seek out partners for the purchase of the Clippers.

Ballmer last year joined a group, led by hedge fund manager Chris Hansen, to bid on the Sacramento Kings, intending to move the team to Seattle. NBA owners voted to reject the proposed move.

The businessman said in a recent interview that he had no intention of moving the Clippers. He said that the high valuations for the team only made sense in Los Angeles—the second biggest media market in the country.

Once again, Donald Sterling must agree to sell the team. All indications are he won't. Why is it being reported the guy is buying the Clippers?

It's hilarious watching people like Willie or Loomis claiming Sterling won. Dude was kicked out of the league and forced to sell the team he's owned for 30 years. His name will forever be a black eye for the NBA and his family will forever have to live with his legacy as one of the most hated men in the country!! I guess as long as you have money... integrity and respect mean nothing to these guys.

Well Ak, Sterling is going to make money. Financially it's a win but in terms of losing his toys and ego he probably loses like you said and probably isn't going to be able to hang in the same circles as he once did. As far as lifestyle he's going to "survive" and the way this country is all he has to do is go away for awhile on a long vacation away from media. Soon enough America will be more worried about who's going to win American Idle, Big Brother, or worried about downloading the latest app. This story will disappear and people will forget soon enough. The next time we will hear of him is when he dies and we'll all see his legacy summed in in a ESPN media clip of the Clippers throwing their workout gear in mid-court of a playoff game.

So is he moving the team to Seattle?

I'm pretty sure he has to agree not to for the owners to approve it and he has already said he wouldn't because the price paid is for an LA market and would be ridiculous to take it to Seattle.

Calm down with the insults bro. No need. And it's not like he needs cash to pay his mortgage, lmao!!! You act like this is some rags to riches story. He's been a multi millionaire for decades and a billionaire for a while. He was forced out and disgraced. No one wants that in their life. He's definitely the loser in this.

I mean, there is no doubt turning 12 mil to 2 bil is a solid investment to say the least, lol. But he didn't want to sell, he wanted it in his families name, it was his social baby. Imagine being the owner of an NBA basketball team, that's like having a 20 inch dong. Guarantee he had no thoughts whatsoever of selling and he was going to end his life with his baby and the power that comes with it. I actually am starting to feel sad for the guy... but when you read his history it is just impossible for the NBA to keep him in. Anyone claiming that Sterling won out of this situation is out of their mind. He's an 80 year old billionaire... he doesn't need cash.
