Not even sure what I'm really looking for. IN this day and age with Camera Phones, haven't bought a Camera in a Long time.

But I shoot pictures for the wife for one of her sites. Using a Light box, so either a decent SLR ( under $1,000 ) or a Good Point and shoot

I have a Nikon 3200 and its fantastic. Got a great deal at best buy for $699 with a 200mm lense added in. I know a ton of people that use the same camera and not a single complaint. The 5200 is probably the best but I didnt want to shell out that type of money before learning how to use an slr. I shoot Nascar and with some additions my photos are great.

I have the Nikon D5100. Have been into photography my whole life since I was a little kid went to college for it as well. Funny now I barely grab The Nikon unless I'm on vacation. Sad to say I use my camera phone more than anything else these days. Seems to be a pain to haul around my giant backpack with all my camera gear everywhere I go. Also I'm worried about it getting stolen here in Costa Rica.

Yeah agree, wanted to spend less than $1,000 on a SLR because this will be my first one
I've been shooting Jewelry for over 10 years with a Point and shoot and the picture are nice, but time to upgrade from my Fujifilm FinePix 2800 2MP Digital Camera w/ 6x Optical Zoom. That shit is OLD.. lol

I prefer Nikon over Canon but that's just a personal preference. Have owned Nikon's my whole life.

Cannon has the software side figured out.
If you have any plans on doing any kind of work on the internet with your camera cannon is good.

depends on what you'll be doing with the camera. Not a photography guy? get a good point and shoot. You'll save a ton. And it will meet your demands. Press the button it does all the work. Haven't seen the latest point-and-shoots, I'm sure they're stacked.

Digital- SLR- of course these can behave like a point and shoot--just put it in auto-mode and voila you have an ultra-expensive point-and-shoot camera, :). However, if you're 'into' photography, DSLR is the camera for you. Price range runs the full gamut- introductory DSLR (they give information/feedback, 'light to low' etc ) to advanced pro-beasts (Nikon D4). The two upper echelon companies are Canon, Nikon. DSLR's allow you to be the quarterback -- can run it on full manual if you like, or just control certain settings (aperture, shutter speed, have scene modes...). Thy also allow for introducing new lenses (interchangeable)- this is huge. But again, only needed if your into photography. I know a few people who have pricey DSLR cameras and run them like point-and-shoot'. :)

I own the Nikon D7000. Fantastic camera. Video on it is pretty good too!! Got the telephoto zoom AF-S VR Nikkor 70-200mm 2.8G lens-outstanding for indoor sports photography

My friend had told me all I need is a good point and shoot because I am shooting into a light box.
but I'm looking for something better.

then you'll be buying a DSLR, :). For what's it worth, I'd stick to either of the two gorillas in the industry: Canon or Nikon. Main reason being the breadth of available elite lenses. For the most part, the body (sensor) of most DSLR are great . The LENS is the limiting factor. Put a so so or even poor lens on a brilliant sensor? Shots are compromised. Most lenses sold with a body (a kit lens) are average. Choosing between Canon or Nikon? can't go wrong with either. Check their functionality; at a camera store see the back of both--which do you prefer? fiddle with the buttons, their set-up. Now choose the camera ya want (entry level....mid pack.....high end DX/entry full frame......pro beast). I can't speak of the Canon lineup, I'm a Nikon fella. Candidly, the Nikon D3300 plus 18-55mm VR II lens and you're set. :) It will give you outstanding pictures (great sensor). Only reason to pay for a more pricier camera would be for added controls/features.

wonder what your semi-pro friend will recommend? :)
