June Pitchers Report

May 31, 2014

April – May

If it’s June, school is out and so too should the NBA playoffs be concluding sometime later this month… we think. It’s also the time of the season when MLB pitchers look to ace exams in hopes of keeping their teams in the pennant chase. To get a better feel on what to expect, let’s examine their results from exams in the past.

Listed below are hurlers that have enjoyed a two-to-one or better success ratio in team starts the last three seasons during the month of June. On the flip side, we’ve also listed pitchers that struggle in June team starts, winning 33% percent or less of their efforts. To qualify pitchers must have made a minimum of 10 starts, with at least one start each June over the last three years.

Note: * designates pitcher was on this list last year.

I’ll be back next month with July’s Good Month Pitchers. Until then, hey batter, batter…

GOOD MONTH PITCHERS:

*Buchholz, Clay (9-0)

The Boston right-hander is in the midst of a horrific season at 2-4 with a Godzilla-sized ERA of 7.02. On May 28 he was placed on the DL for a hyperextended left knee and his return is not known.

Burnett, A. J. (9-4)

After escaping the pressure of the Yankees, Burnett has evolved into a more complete pitcher and really mixes his pitches well. No reason he cannot continue his success of the past this month if he does a better job either working further inside or staying away from left-hand hitters, who are batting .297 against Burnett.

Colon, Bartolo (9-2)

The rotund righty from the Dominican just turned 41 years old and has not had the same kind of success in New York as the past couple of seasons in Oakland. He can have another strong June if he spots his fastball better to hit the catcher’s target.

*Dickey, R. A. (12-4)

While the knuckleballer has not been terrific, he’s lowered his ERA a run and been part of the reason Toronto leapfrogged into first place in the AL East. With the Rogers Centre having the roof open more frequently with summer here, that should add a little more “dance” to Dickey’s main pitch to help his club keep posting wins.

*Sabathia, C. C. (12-4)

The big left-hander was placed on the DL on May 14 with degenerative changes in his right knee and according to manager Joe Girardi, the soonest Sabathia will be back with New York is July.

Scherzer, Max (11-4)

While Scherzer has not been as devastating as he was in 2013, he’s still allowing fewer hits to innings pitched and on pace to have well over 200 strikeouts. Right-hand hitters are right on the Mendoza Line with a .204 batting average against him. Expect the positive results to continue.

*Verlander, Justin (13-5)

It has been unusual season to say the least for Verlander. For the first time since 2008, he’s well below a punch-out per inning (27.2 percent lower) and if he continues to dole out free passes at this rate, he could set a career high for walks. The velocity and command have not been there, will the warmer weather help Verlander heat up, or is something simply not right?

*Wilson, C. J. (13-3)

Though he’s behind the pace that made him a 17-game winner a season ago, Wilson’s other numbers are all better to this point of the season which suggests he could be a big winner the rest of the way. In his past 10 outings he has a sharp 2.54 ERA and he’s devouring those to the left side of the plate in the batter’s box, holding them to a .194 average.

Zimmermann, Jordan (13-3)

The Wisconsin native season has gone like his team, not so hot, surrendering 38 base hits in 26.2 innings in May, not once getting beyond the sixth inning. This is uncharacteristic for Zimmermann who is usually very consistent. Let’s see if he turns it around this month and throws like he has in the past compared to opposing hitter’s raking him for .307 BA this season.

BAD MONTH PITCHERS:

Bailey, Homer (2-9)

The Reds righty might be 5-3 as the month starts, but his winning record will not last long if his ERA is still remains around 5 and opposing batters continue to club him at a .295 BA rate. Bailey’s been like a batting practice pitcher versus lefties, who are hitting an astonishing .380 against him.

*Fister, Doug (3-10)

Fister did not join the Washington rotation until May 9 because of injury and has thrown fairly well to this point. A good chunk of the losses in June were thanks to sorry Seattle clubs he toiled for. But given the Nationals scoring woes and disturbing defense, Fister might have to be great to alter his previous fortunes.

*Guthrie, Jeremy (4-9)

A middle of the rotation starter, Guthrie had a couple poor outings in May to help ‘raise’ his ERA to 4.14; however, he’s also been a victim of lack of run support and should have a better record than 2-4. While it is not a vast number of starts, be aware Guthrie has an ERA of over 6 in day games this season.

*Nolasco, Ricky (4-12)

Minnesota must have no pitching prospects ready to join the big club because how else could you explain starting Nolasco with a 6.12 ERA, with opponents hitting a robust .322 against his very hittable tosses.

*Norris, Bud (4-10)

No hiding from this fact, any baseball bettor would at least consider Norris when he’s pitching at home, but put a road uniform on him and he is 15-32 for his career and definite play against material.

*Sanchez, Anibal (4-8)

Throughout his career, Sanchez has never been a pitcher who has received proper run support. Though the Tigers offense has been solid most of the season, Sanchez has a .500 record with a stellar 2.49 ERA and opposing batters have a feeble .183 BA against him. If Detroit scores, he could reverse past indiscretions. If not, another losing month could occur.

Pirates, Dodgers clash

June 1, 2014

Pittsburgh (25-30) at Los Angeles Dodgers (30-27)

First pitch: Sunday, 8:05 p.m. ET

Sportsbook.ag Line and Total: Los Angeles -175, Pittsburgh +155, Total: 7 (Under -125)

The Dodgers and Pirates do battle under the bright lights of Los Angeles in their series finale on Sunday night.

Pittsburgh has been playing much better baseball of late, winning six of its past nine games after defeating L.A. by a score of 6-3 in the opener of this four-game series on Thursday. The Pirates homered twice off of Dodgers’ starter Dan Haren in the game, once from 3B Pedro Alvarez and then later from C Russell Martin. They brought a tie game into the seventh inning and were able to get to the Los Angeles relievers, scoring three times in that frame while the Pittsburgh bullpen closed out the game. OF Andrew McCutchen (.307 BA) was 0-for-4 in the victory but is still a stellar 11-for-36 (.305) over his past 10 games.

On Friday, Francisisco Liriano tossed a gem as the Pirates defeated Josh Beckett the Dodgers 2-1. On Saturday, Los Angeles stopped the bleeding with a 12-2 rout behind the red-hot bat of Hanley Ramirez. The shortstop went 4-for-4 which included a two-run homer in the fourth.

The Dodgers are still struggling in the NL West, and are tied with the Rockies at 6.5 games behind the Giants. They come into this contest as winners in six of their past 10 games, but have lost the last two while scoring a combined five runs. The offense did have four extra-base hits on Thursday, and OF Yasiel Puig (.348 BA) was 2-for-4 with two doubles to make him 16-for-35 (.457) with five doubles, two homers, 5 RBI and eight runs in his most recent 10-game stretch. 2B Dee Gordon (.288 BA) swiped two more bags in the loss and now has a league-leading 32 steals on the year.

Toeing the rubber on Sunday for the visiting Pirates will be RHP Edinson Volquez (2-4, 4.30 ERA) as he goes up against one of the top arms in the game, RHP Zack Greinke (8-1, 2.18 ERA).

Even with the win on Thursday, Pittsburgh is just 9-16 in away games this season while Los Angeles is a poor 12-16 at home.

Going back three seasons, the Dodgers are now 11-5 in this matchup and that includes a 7-2 record at home.

Edinson Volquez has put together two solid starts in a row while giving up just seven hits and three runs in 11 innings, but has struggled with control, with seven walks in that time. His last start came against the Mets, as he earned a no-decision and walked a season-high five batters, which is surprising due to his career-low walk rate of 7.9% this year. With his improved control, he has seen his strikeout numbers decrease, as Volquez is mowing down just 5.6 batters per nine innings in 2014, which is well below his 8.2 K/9 career rate.

He has had seven career starts against the Dodgers, going 2-3 with a 3.86 ERA and horrible 1.61 WHIP, due to walking 29 batters in just 39 frames. OF Matt Kemp (5-for-12, 1 HR, 2 RBI) and 1B Adrian Gonzalez (4-for-12, 2 HR, 4 RBI) have had plenty of success against the 30-year-old, while middle infielders Hanley Ramirez and Dee Gordon have combined to go just 4-for-26 (.154) with seven strikeouts in the matchup.

Going into Friday’s game, the Pirates bullpen has gone 16-7 with a 2.88 ERA and 1.27 WHIP, and are 16-for-26 (62%) in their save chances. Jason Grilli (3.27 ERA, 6 saves) notched his second save since returning from the DL on Thursday and is 6-for-9 in save opportunities this year.

Zack Greinke is often overshadowed by Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw, but he should not be taken lightly and has been one of the best starters in baseball since 2011, going 54-16 (.771) while having his ERA decrease in each successive season. This year has quite possibly been Greinke's best, with batters hitting just .240 against him while he is striking out 10.4 batters per nine innings, while showing unbelievable control (1.9 BB/9). Greinke has allowed two or fewer earned runs in 10 of his 11 starts this year and is coming off a start against the Reds where he threw 7.2 frames while giving up three runs on eight hits with zero walks and 11 strikeouts.

He has now started eight games against Pittsburgh in his career and is surprisingly 5-2 despite a high 5.29 ERA and 1.18 WHIP against them. Superstar OF Andrew McCutchen has been horrible against Greinke, going 4-for-21 with a double, triple, 2 RBI and four strikeouts, while 3B Pedro Alvarez (2-for-15, 2 HR, 4 RBI, 3 K’s) and 2B Neil Walker (4-for-18, 2 HR, 5 RBI) have hit for power, but not average against him. SS Clint Barmes has had the most success against Greinke, and is 7-for-13 against him with two doubles and 2 RBI.

Even with all of the big names in the Dodgers’ bullpen, they have gone just 4-13 with a 4.12 ERA and 1.41 WHIP while converting 17-of-21 (81%) saves. Closer Kenley Jansen (3.75 ERA, 16 saves) has blown two saves this season while having an incredible 39 strikeouts in just 24 innings on the mound (14.5 K/9).

Armadillo: Sunday's six-pack

-- Before you ordain a modern reliever the greatest closer ever, keep in mind that in the 1974 World Series, Rollie Fingers threw 9.1 innings in four games.

-- Mets-Phillies played 14 innings on consecutive days; of the 209 batters in the two games, 90 of them either walked or struck out.

-- Ryan Howard got his 1,000th career RBI in his 1,230th game.

-- Funny to watch Miguel Cabrera make a nice play on a foul pop in Seattle last night, as the Detroit announcer sounded shocked that he caught the ball.

-- Tampa Bay third base coach Tom Foley is wearing a "Zimnmer 66" jersey in honor of Rays' aide Don Zimmer, who is recovering from a heart ailment.

-- Edwin Encarnacion has come to bat with 186 men on base this season, more than anyone else; Pedro Alvarez (183) in second, Brandon Moss (170) third.

Armadillo: Sunday's List of 13: Things haven't always been this way.........

13) Before Wikipedia there were encyclopedias, 24-volume book sets that guys went door-to-door selling, trying to convince parents that their kids would never get to college unless they bought this cumbersome set of heavy books. Encyclopedia Brittanica was the Cadillac of these books; Lord knows I plagiarized enough from those books to make high school a little bit easier.

12) Until I was 13, you had to get out of your chair to turn the channel on the TV. Seriously. Of course, we also only had four channels and one of them was PBS which no one watched, so my thumb wasn’t as agile as it is now, after years of working the remote control.

11) ESPN didn’t come into being until I was a sophomore in college; remember watching a Lamar-New Mexico State basketball game and thinking, “Wow, this is a great idea.” Little did I know just how great, the best thing ever for college basketball.

10) There used to be phone booths everywhere; some poor bastards invested in those 20-25 years ago and got stuck with something no one needed anymore, once cellphones became the rage. For a dime or a quarter, you could go in the booth and make a phone call. For three minutes.

9) As late as 1974, an NHL goalie played in a game without a mask- seriously. I can remember in the early 80’s, if an NHL player wore a helmet, he was considered a wimp. Now it’s mandated that everyone have proper protection- guy named Bill Masterson died in 1968 when he fell and hit his head on the ice while playing in a game for Minnesota North Stars.

8) First night World Series game wasn’t until 1971; I’m thinking the first night All-Star Game was 1966 in Anaheim, but I’m not 100% sure on that. TV has made all of these events huge money makers but for them to be money makers, they have to be played in prime time, under the lights.

7) Everyone takes selfies now; pictures of themselves with their cellphone. David Ortiz took a selfie with him and the President at the White House. It was kind of a big deal to have a camera a long time ago; now most everyone has one in their pocket or their purse, since most cellphones have cameras in them.

6) The whole idea of reality TV has blown up; now anyone can become a celebrity, which definitely is not progress. Coach of the Cleveland Browns, Mike Pettine, was in a reality show about high school football with his dad 15 years, when he was coaching high school ball in eastern Pennsylvania. Lot of people are becoming celebrities for the wrong reason, or for no reason at all.

5) In 1974 Maryland was #3 in the country in college basketball, but lost the ACC tournament final to NC State in OT and didn’t go to the NCAAs, because back then, only the conference champ went to the NCAAs. Tournament gradually expanded until it got to 64 teams in 1985, which is where it thrived. The current 68 teams is just about the same thing; any more would be too much.

4) Hand sanitizing lotion is a new thing you see around a lot, as people protect against spreading germs. They even have stands with lotion in them here at work; you look at a door in a public place, lot of different hands have touched those doors and you don’t know where those hands have been.

3) Cars have GPS systems now so drivers don’t get lost; I’m not that fond of them, but some people really like them. Back in the day, our GPS were paper; they were called maps.

2) Viagra was originally invented as a heart medicine, but found its way into more recreational use; people who sell this must make a freakin’ fortune. It’s a little unnerving to me to take a pill that changes how the blood flows in your body, but that’s just me.

1) Online shopping is a huge change in the last couple decades; you can sit at home and go nuts buying stuff, and it gets delivered to your house. It can also be a problem, if it becomes an addiction but for the most part, this has been a very positive change, since you can save time sitting at home shopping on the computer.

MLB roundup: Cardinals promote OF Taveras
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The St. Louis Cardinals called up prized outfielder prospect Oscar Taveras on Saturday.

With a calf injury that placed first baseman Matt Adams on the 15-day disabled list, the 21-year-old Taveras made his major-league debut against the San Francisco Giants. He was in the lineup starting in right field and batting sixth.

Taveras is batting .325 with seven home runs and 40 RBIs at Triple-A Memphis this season.

Adams' injury allows for Craig's move to first base.

---New York Yankees first baseman Mark Teixeira left Saturday's game against the Minnesota Twins after aggravating his surgically repaired right wrist.

Teixeira, who missed three games earlier this week with inflammation in the wrist, was pulled in favor of pinch-hitter Brian Roberts in the fifth inning after striking out and grounding out in his first two at-bats. Roberts took over at third base and Kelly Johnson moved from third to first base.

Teixeira played just 15 games last year. This season, he is batting .242 with nine home runs and 25 RBIs in 128 at-bats in 37 games.

---San Francisco Giants catcher Buster Posey was out of the lineup Saturday for the third straight game with nerve irritation in his lower back.

Hector Sanchez got the start against the St. Louis Cardinals, batting fifth in the lineup.

Posey also missed two other games earlier in the month with the same injury. He is off to a slow start on offense, hitting just .254 with seven homers and 25 RBIs.

Sunday, June 1

Robinson Cano, Seattle - Ques Sun

Cano missed the last three games due to an illness and is questionable to play Sunday against the Tigers.

Stiff back sidelines Angels' Trout

Angels center fielder Mike Trout was a late scratch from the lineup Saturday night because of upper back stiffness and might miss Sunday's series finale as well, manager Mike Scioscia said.

Trout's back flared up Saturday morning, but he was in the initial lineup at designated hitter, batting second.

"We were going to try to see if he could go out there and swing, but it's just not quite loose enough to where you want to risk any further injury," Scioscia said before the Angels lost to the A's 11-3 on Saturday. "Hopefully, it's something that quiets down and he'll be ready to go tomorrow.

"He'll get treatment on it and we'll see."

Trout is hitting .294 with 11 home runs and 38 RBIs. He has an 11-game hitting streak that has brought his average back up after it had dipped from .314 in April down to .263.

Broken hand sends Diamondbacks' Pollock to DL

Arizona center fielder A.J. Pollock suffered a fractured right hand Saturday night and will be placed on the disabled list, manager Kirk Gibson said.

Pollock was struck by a pitch from Cincinnati ace Johnny Cueto with one out in the eighth inning of the Reds' 5-0 victory.

Pollock, who is hitting .316 with six home runs and eight stolen bases, could be out awhile. Arizona second baseman Aaron Hill missed 10 weeks after undergoing surgery on his fractured left hand last season.

Armadillo: Monday's six-pack

-- Former Texas football coach Mack Brown is joining ESPN as an analyst.

-- NBA Finals are back to a 2-2-1-1-1 format, after years of 2-3-2.

-- Mets/Phillies played 14-14-11 innings the last three days. Puts a lot of strain on both pitching staffs, with teams playing again on Monday.

-- Last time teams played consecutive 14+ inning games against each other was in 2003, when Indians-Pirates did it.

-- Phillies lost seven of Cole Hamels' eight starts this season.

-- In Chris Sale's last four starts, opposing hitters are 4-78 against him.

**********

Armadillo: Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports weekend.........

13) Los Angeles Kings win Game 7 in OT at Chicago; they're first team in NHL history to get to the NHL Finals after winning three seven-game series.

12) Nothing in sports is as dramatic as overtime in Game 7 of an NHL series.

11) There was an earthquake (3.8) in the Los Angeles near the end of the hockey game; ESPN announcers at the Pirate-Dodger game said they didn't feel it.

10) Think about Milwaukee Bucks selling for $550M, the Clippers for $2B; only three years ago, the Philadelphia 76ers sold for $280M. What a bargain.

9) I'm not fond of Phillies batting Ben Revere leadoff; he's walked four times in 194 plate appearances. Leadoff hitters have to get on-base. Revere's OB% is .299.

8) Former LSU backup QB Hayden Rettig is transferring, leaving Les Miles with only two QBs on his roster; Philip Rivers' brother also transferred out of Baton Rouge earlier this spring. Rettig could wind up at Boston College, where his brother Chase just graduated after playing QB for the Eagles.

7) Kyle Lohse is 7-1, 2.60 this season, headed to the All-Star Game; he threw a 93-pitch complete game against the Cubs Sunday.

6) Under was 14-1 in the Brewers' first 15 home games this season; it is 3-11-1 in the last fifteen games at Miller Park. Go figure.

5) TCU beat San Houston State in 22 innings in the NCAA baseball tournament late Saturday night; both teams lose there-- lot of strain on the pitchers.

4) Dr James Andrews probably cringed when he heard that the kid who threw 99 pitches for Sam Houston Saturday also pitched in relief Sunday. Oy.

3) Hideki Matsuyama birdied 18th hole at Muirfield Village all four days of the Memorial tournament, first-ever player in 39 years to do that, but his par on 18 on the first playoff hole won him his first tournament on American soil.

2) Matsuyama broke his driver teeing off on 18 first time he played it Sunday, he used a 3-wood on the playoff hole. Kevin Na then hit his tee ball in the water, which was the deciding mistake in the tournament.

1) PGA Tour was saying yesterday that this week was the first time in the last 40 years that the final twosome on a Sunday (Bubba Watson/Scott Langley) were both lefthanded. Neither played very well Sunday.

Game of the Day: Mariners at Yankees
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Seattle Mariners at New York Yankees (+123, 7.5)

Felix Hernandez attempts to continue his stellar pitching as the Seattle Mariners return to New York for one contest against the Yankees on Monday to make up a rained-out game from April 30. Hernandez has won four consecutive starts and fared well in six previous outings at the new Yankee Stadium with a 4-1 mark and 1.18 ERA. Former New York star Robinson Cano (hand) has missed Seattle’s past four games and is questionable for Monday.

The Yankees suffered a devastating loss on Sunday as closer David Robertson blew his second save of the season and Minnesota scored six times in the ninth for a 7-2 victory. New York lost both home games against the Mariners earlier this season when the fans booed Cano every time he batted. Seattle took two of three from the Detroit Tigers over the weekend at home and is making the cameo in New York prior to playing two games in Atlanta and four more at the Tampa Bay Rays.

TV:
7:05 p.m. ET, ROOT (Seattle), YES (New York)

LINE MOVES:
The Yankees opened as +111 home dogs and are currently +123. The total is 7.5.

INJURY REPORT:
Mariners - 2B Robinson Cano (Questionable, illness). Yankees - 1B Mark Teixeira (Questionable, wrist), RF Carlos Beltran (Indefinitely, elbow).

PITCHING MATCHUP:
Mariners RH Felix Hernandez (7-1, 2.57 ERA) vs. Yankees RH David Phelps (1-2, 3.38)

Hernandez has worked eight or more innings in each of his last three starts, allowing only four runs and 16 hits during the stretch. He struck out nine and gave up one run and four hits in 8 2/3 innings against the Los Angeles Angels in his last turn. Hernandez is 8-5 with a 2.89 ERA and two shutouts in 16 career starts against the Yankees.

Phelps has lost consecutive starts to the Chicago White Sox and St. Louis. He gave up five runs (three earned) and eight hits in six innings against the Cardinals on Tuesday in his last turn. Phelps is 1-0 with a 1.23 ERA in two career appearances (one start) against Seattle.

TRENDS:

* Mariners are 4-0 in the last four meetings in New York.
* Under is 15-4-2 in the last 21 meetings.
* Mariners are 5-0 in Hernandezs last five starts as a favorite.
* Yankees are 0-7 in their last seven games as a home underdog.
