The San Diego Padres spent a pick Saturday in the baseball draft on an infielder better known for his football prowess.
Cleveland Browns quarterback Johnny Manziel was selected in the 28th round as the 837th overall pick by the Padres. Manziel didn't play baseball in college while at Texas A&M but discussed the possibility with coaches before deciding to stick with football.
Manziel last played baseball as a junior at Tivy High School in Kerrville, Texas. He was a middle infielder.
Manziel, who won the Heisman Trophy after his redshirt freshman season with the Aggies in 2012, was picked in the first round of the NFL Draft in May by the Browns. He is currently practicing with the team in Organized Team Activities.
The last Heisman winner to be selected in the baseball draft was Florida State's Jameis Winston by the Texas Rangers in the 15th round in 2012. Other Heisman winners who have been drafted include Ricky Williams, Charlie Ward, Chris Weinke and Bo Jackson.
Quarterbacks have been popular baseball draft picks in the past few years. Among the latest are Russell Wilson of the Seattle Seahawks, Colin Kaepernick of the San Francisco 49ers and Jake Locker of the Tennessee Titans.
Wilson was drafted by the Baltimore Orioles in 2007, the Colorado Rockies in 2010 and in the Rule 5 Draft last winter by the Texas Rangers. Locker was selected in the 10th round by the Angels in 2009.
