KANSAS CITY — How do you cope with the retirement of the best closer of all-time? Draft his son and hope that in a few years another Mariano Rivera is getting the ball in tight ninth innings in the Bronx.
The Yankees did just that Saturday, taking Mo’s son, Mariano Rivera Jr., in the 29th round of the Major League Baseball draft. Rivera’s son, a 20-year-old junior at Iona, was the 872nd pick overall.
The move made Joe Girardi grin.
“Kind of neat,” the manager said. “I know he comes from good bloodlines.”
Girardi saw Rivera at the Stadium last week and said he spoke to him about his son.
“Got a little scouting report,” Girardi said. “Mo wasn’t sure, if he got drafted, what he would do. But I think it’s neat that he got drafted by the Yankees and we’ll see what happens.”
Asked what the scouting report was, Girardi said. “His velocity — he’s gotten bigger and stronger and it’s increased. Mo didn’t have much to say. He’s always been a humble guy and he wasn’t going to say much about his son, but he likes what he’s doing.”
At Iona this season, Rivera had a 2-6 record with a 5.40 ERA in 13 games (12 starts). He threw five complete games and allowed 72 hits in 70 innings while striking out 50, according to Iona’s website.
