ATLANTIC CITY, N.J.

— A northern New Jersey man's penchant for cheating at craps has earned him a lengthy prison sentence.
Derek Bethea was sentenced to 17 years in state prison on Friday after a jury found him guilty of cheating at three Atlantic City casinos last summer. The incidents occurred weeks after Bethea had been released from prison on a previous cheating conviction.
After a weeklong trial last month, Bethea was convicted of swindling and cheating at casino gambling. Prosecutors introduced evidence that showed the 57-year-old Bayonne resident had posted bets at the craps tables after the dice had already come out. The incidents occurred at the Borgata, Resorts and Revel casinos last August.
Bethea was convicted in 2001 and 2005 for similar crimes.

This seems a little overboard to me, even with the past convictions. 3-5 years with probation and then a lifetime ban from all casinos makes more sense to me.

Agree with this. Maybe even throw in 6 months in jail, because he did it before. But 17 years ?? Really ??

lets see...counting card is illegal even though you dont touch the cards and only relying on your brain to try to beat the casino. the casion getting you hammered out of your mind with alcohol and losing all your money is just fine. yea equality for all...

I never understood that. So basically you cant use your brain to beat the game. It is just expected that you are too lose and if somehow you win, they kick you out. What a joke. I dont bet for any kind of joy or pleasure, I do it to attempt to win $$.

Total BSBut somehow it's ok/legal for casinos to cheat everyone...
They don"t actually cheat. Just take advantage of every form of flaw in human nature and ignorance. In Nevada they would have probably given the guy life.

Counting is never "illigal". They can just refuse you as a client for any reason they damn please. Might as well realize it.... they will shut us down anywhere in the casino if they see us beating them. Table games, spoetsbook, probably even the buffet if you stuff your neck full enough.

Going by his age, he basically received a life sentence. Big time counterfeiters don't get 17 years. They do a few months at a Fed prison camp and then get a job at the FBI working in fraud.

I know the laws in Nevada are pretty heavy when it comes to casino cheating. It's the lifeblood of the state so they feel they have to protect it with harsh penalties. I can only imagine that New Jersey does the same although gambling isn't as essential to the state's economy that gambling is to Nevada.
