Idiot soccer fan question #4

With the points system and 2 teams that advance with draws or get eliminated with a loss what's to stop these 2 teams from getting together before a game and saying to each other lets have a draw?

I mean this is in the best interest of both teams. Why should either team take the risk of losing and getting knocked out when a tie is just as good?

I think this points system is flawed.

Very real chance of this happening in the USA v. Germany game tomorrow.

the only reason to prevent this from happening is that the first seed in the group wont have to face another first seed from the other group, 1st and 2 nd seeds in group G (usa/germany/portugal/ghana) will face 1st and 2nd seeds in group H (belgium/south korea/russia/algeria) now this group H is not the toughest in the world cup but you'd rather face russia/algeria/south korea than the most likely first seed belgium in the knockout stage.

I don't know crap about soccer. Don't care either. And I am sure MONEY is the answer to my question.... like virtually all questions in sports!

But....... wouldn't it be better to play the thing down somehow to far fewer teams before bringing them together. Seems to me a sports where anyone can beat anyone 1-0 with just the slightest spark of luck..... really leaves too much room for stupid outcomes.

Again.... don't care..... it is more or less just a competition about conditioning only.

it is playd to fewer teams, thats why the qualifying rounds are played, for the CONCACAF area if im not mistaken it starts with the caribbean qualifying rounds, they a groups stage with caribbean central and north american teams divided into 3 groups of 4 teams each playing home and away, the first and second seeded at each group qualify to the final stage consisting of 6 teams playing each other home and away and the first three of this stage qualify directly to the World Cup. And this happens on every zone/region the FIFA has Euro Asia Africa, and thats the reason is held every 4 yours, must of you americans dont really get how big soccer really is worldwide, you think the superbowl is the biggest sporting event but is actually the World Cup, im not the biggest fan of soccer but it is like that

This post is idiotic. So, if you go get 11 of the most conditioned athletes in the world and throw them in a game against USAMNT your conditioned team will win? Lol

Kenya is ranked #108 in the world.......Not even in the Top 100 Countries and Kenya has never qualified for a World Cup.....Maybe a recent tie against Comoros for AFCON2015 Qualifcation will get them back on track

A couple of them would fall down and roll around in agony for a minute every 10 minutes....they are conditioned to do that.

I think the excitement level would be about the same. The only difference is that there would be about 1 fewer goals

I think this points system is flawed.

It has happened in the history of soccer...most notably in 1982 when West Germany played Austria. Germany needed a win to advance, Austria only needed to not lose that game by more than three goals. Germany scored early, neither team did anything on offense after that and both went on to the next round after the 1-0 final. That game was the entire reason FIFA started playing group stage matches at the same time on the last day. I really hope the US doesn't get themselves into the Round of 16 like that through some backdoor deal...it's totally lame and I'd rather earn it legitimately. To answer your question of what's to stop them from reaching some secret agreement...nothing. You just have to hope the players go all out...out of respect for the game.

But by the same logic, the NFL playoff system is also flawed. Once a team clinches home field or a playoff spot, they may rest starters for the last few weeks. How is that any different than not trying to win a meaningless WC group stage game?

With that in mind, what is flawed about the points system? I can't think of a better method than what they use now...
