Rays @ Orioles
Recommendation: Rays -114
Afterunderachieving for most of the season, the Rays have been playing decentbaseball lately. They’ll look to win the series against the O’s on Sunday, ateam that hasn’t fared well at all against Alex Cobb. In fact, Cobb has pitchedbetter against the Orioles than any other team he has faced. He’s 3-1 with a1.36 ERA against them lifetime. Cobb also has a big day/night dichotomy, pitching much more efficient during the day rather than at night.
Thereare many players in the current Orioles lineup that struggle mightily againstCobb. In particular, Chris Davis. Davis has his worst statistical numbersagainst Tampa. Nelson Cruz, who is tied for the league lead with 25 home runs, should struggle in this matchup as well. Cobb has a great knack for makinghitters miss with his changeup. Cruz has a tough time picking up on changeupsin general and will more than likely be fooled by the change in speeds Cobb willthrow at him.
MiguelGonzalez’s numbers look alright on the surface against the Rays. But dig deeperand you will find that he has actually been fairly lucky against this squad.Against the Rays current lineup, Gonzalez has a 6.51 FIP. This extremely highnumber indicates that Gonzalez should struggle Sunday. I’ll look to playagainst the O’s while their bats are down in this favorable matchup. Take theRays.
Angels @ Royals
Recommendation: Angels -108
TheSurging Angels are definitely a “Play On” team right now, especially against theKansas City Royals. The Halos have won 7 of their last 8 ballgames and 6 oftheir last 7 against the Royals. Mike Trout is being, well, Mike Trout, andDavid Freese has recently stepped up. Freese is tearing the cover off of the ballright now. Anaheim’s offense is clicking on all cylinders and they’ll hand theball the C.J. Wilson to get yet another win in this series Sunday.
Wilsonhas struggled lately, hence why this line is where it’s at, but he has neverlost in his career against Kansas City. He has lacked run support most of thetime and that shouldn’t be an issue with the way the Angels are hitting rightnow. Jeremy Guthrie has been a solid pitcher for the Royals this year. My guessis that he won’t be looking forward to this contest though as the Angels havegiven him nightmares in the past. Guthrie has a 7.33 FIP against the Angelscurrent roster! That number is absolutely through the roof. If the odd makerswant to give us near even money in this spot, I will gladly take it. Take theAngels.
