KEY STAT: Germany have lost just one of their last 25 matches

EXPERT VERDICT: Algeria's dynamic display against Germany may have taken a great deal out of Joachim Low's team, but they should still have enough to beat France. The Germans are the masters at getting the job done without playing well and there was little from Les Bleus display against Nigeria to suggest they can cope against superior opposition.

RECOMMENDATION: Germany

KEY STAT: Colombia are unbeaten in their last 11 matches

EXPERT VERDICT: The host nation breathed a huge sigh of relief after Brazil’s penalty shootout success over Chile but their joy could be short-lived. Luis Gustavo’s suspension will disrupt the Brazilian midfield which functioned so much better against Chile, and quarter-final opponents Colombia are playing well enough to take advantage.

RECOMMENDATION: Colombia

KEY STAT: Holland have won their last six internationals, scoring 15 goals

EXPERT VERDICT: Costa Rica's remarkable run to the quarter-finals has set up a clash with Holland and both teams may be weary after their exertions in the last 16. A low-scoring game looks likely – Costa Rica's last three matches have featured only three goals – and Holland's quality in attack could be decisive.

RECOMMENDATION: Holland 1-0

FOR FILLIES AND MARES THREE YEARS OLD AND UPWARD WHICH HAVE NOT WON A RACE SINCE JANUARY 2. THREE YEAR OLDS, 119 LBS.; OLDER, 124 LBS. CLAIMING PRICE $4,000.

RECOMMENDED CHOICES

The Walker Group Picks

# 6 BLINGS RISING STAR 7/2

# 3 DOUBLE THE SILK 3/1

# 2 REGARDING OPAL 5/2

BLINGS RISING STAR looks strong to best this field. She ought to be given a shot given the competitive speed numbers. The Equibase Speed Figure of 58 from her last affair looks very good in here. Has a solid shot in this event if you like back class. DOUBLE THE SILK - Look for a solid performance with the class drop. The winning percentage shown by horses entered by Salim running at this distance are the most competitive in this field. REGARDING OPAL - Must be given a chance given the class of races run as of late. Looks very strong to be close to the lead at the first call.

RECOMMENDED CHOICES

The Walker Group Picks

# 1 GRANDSON T. 3/1

# 3 BURST OF GLORY 5/2

# 4 PRIMER PORTENTO 2/1

GRANDSON T. looks to be a very good contender. Has decent Equibase Class Figures relative to this group of animals - worth a look. Mercado has this horse racing well and is a formidable selection based on the formidable speed figures garnered in sprint races lately. I like the rider on this horse - quite good chance to win the race. BURST OF GLORY - Must be carefully examined based on the competitive speed fig put up in the last outing. Should best this field here, showing competitive numbers of late. PRIMER PORTENTO - Has formidable Equibase Speed Figures and has to be considered for a wager in this race. Will almost certainly come out sharp - I have liked the way this gelding has moved swiftly to the front end recently.

Thistledown - Race #1 - Post: 12:55pm - Claiming - 5.5 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $8,700 Class Rating: 72

Rating: Golden Dollar

Go grab a hot dog or a beer. This race isn't worth betting

Vulnerable Contenders: #1 PRAYER SALUTE (ML=5/2), #5 SUSIE'S PRAYER (ML=3/1), #7 WELL NOTED LADY (ML=4/1),

PRAYER SALUTE - This probable favorite ran on June 6th and hasn't had a workout after that. SUSIE'S PRAYER - Don't feel this horse will make an impact today. That last speed rating was run-of-the-mill when compared with today's class rating. WELL NOTED LADY - Didn't meet expectations when backed as the favorite in back to back races.

#4 COMEONLETSPLAY (ML=6/1)
#5 BY HIS WORD (ML=4/1)

COMEONLETSPLAY - This gelding is tried right back into a race in less than 10 days; this is a positive sign. Got to appreciate a good work horse. This gelding's last workout was second fastest of the day for the distance. Trainer, Casey, has been deliberate with this gelding off the layoff. Look for a solid effort today. As long as Ramirez keeps this horse off the pace, I have to believe this one could be a winner. BY HIS WORD - This horse could be tough this race, especially since Acosta rode in the last race and now should be better acquainted with this one. Sprinters that come back to the races quickly are generally good plays. I'm optimistic this gelding will run well today. Last work was 2nd fastest of the day, which tells me he's sharp right now. This thoroughbred coming off a solid try in the last month or so is a serious competitor in my humble opinion. You have to like that last race figure, 80, which is the best latest race fig of this group.

Vulnerable Contenders: #6 SEA OF ROSES (ML=5/2), #9 YES I SEE (ML=4/1), #7 CHASIN RUSH (ML=9/2),

SEA OF ROSES - I forecast a setback for this animal in this race. YES I SEE - Granted the last race was nice, finishing first. The lack of any recent activity raises some concerns though. This horse ran a most unsatisfactory fig last out. He shouldn't improve and will likely lose in today's event running that rating. CHASIN RUSH - Mediocre speed figure last out at Charles Town at 6 1/2 furlongs. Don't believe this horse will improve too much in today's event.

STRAIGHT WAGERS:
Putting our cash on #4 COMEONLETSPLAY to win. Have to have odds of at least 3/2 or better though

# 6 NATIVE COUNTRY 2/1

# 8 CYBER COWBOY 5/1

# 5 BEN N AL 6/1

Really keen on the likelihood of NATIVE COUNTRY taking down the winner's share in this race. Could surprise us at a good price. Don't leave out. Could very well provide us a win based on really good recent speed figs - earning an avg of 75. This fine animal has shown us some prior ability, just look at the 74 average class number. Should play well today. CYBER COWBOY - That 73 speed rating clocked in the last race puts this standardbred in the mix in this race. BEN N AL - Have to give the nod to a nice horse coming out of the Running Aces 5 hole. The win percentage is excellent, way above normal. When Miller sends this contender out you can bet they'll be in the money, numbers show them there 68 percent of the time.

# 4 GALE FORCE HANOVER 3/5

# 5 NOAH COUNT 4/1

# 7 TEXAS RIDGE 10/1

If you want a really good play in this race, feast your eyes on GALE FORCE HANOVER. May be the best in the field of horses here, showing really good figures of late. Average speed is a solid 85. The group noted a clear-cut race out of this entrant last time. Hoping for a duplicate of that to end up in the winner's circle. Recently Wrenn has been hot as a pistol, which may give the edge to this gelding this time. NOAH COUNT - Is a clear-cut choice given the 78 speed rating from his most recent contest. The panel of smart guys keenly points out that when Crawford trains this nice horse, the odds of finishing in the top three go way up. TEXAS RIDGE - He has very nice class ratings, averaging 80. Should be considered for a bet in this event. Certainly did like this gelding's last race. Ran a big 73 speed rating. Major player.

Northfield: Wednesday 7/2 Analysis
By Ken Walters

DRF HARNESS

Race 8 - $10,000 Guaranteed Pick Four Pool

Best Bet: GALE FORCE HANOVER (8th)

Spot Play: DVC EASY DOES IT (4th)

Race 1

(1) ROSE RUN JERIAH qualified like a winner and need only stay flat to earn first win this year. (7) BUILDING WEALTH has banged at the door in both races off the qualifier and could pull off the upset with right trip. (4) LUCKY YIM showed improvement taking a drop in company last time and takes another drop down the condition class off that effort in field that has recorded just one win between all nine contestants this year.

Race 2

(1) OIL SLICKER seeks third straight and has the pole. Looks like a quarter move to the top and down the road from there. (5) KATIE AND J has the early speed to get the pocket trip and could be strongest in lane if the top one falters in the late stages. (9) CODYTHECLOWN has been right there in all but one of his last handful of races and would be tough if he gets away from early traffic.

Race 3

(1) CHIPS DREAMER was used to the lead in last getting parked from the six hole. Faces similar but moves in to the rail. (3) ANASTASIA WHINNIE showed life in last and faces sligthly weaker. A late rally may get it done on her best. (9) ROYAL CAT should get away well enough despite the post and if close in the stretch can prove interesting at the wire.

Race 4

(8) DVC EASY DOES IT qualified twice at the Meadows and won most recent. Toured the track in two pari-mutuel races and ships in primed to give it a go. The post hurts but at the price he is worth a long look. (1) ART GENTA has the rail and ships in from Scioto dropping far down in company. That is enough to make him the one to beat. (3) EXPRESSO FORTE was scratched in last when dropped to this level. This field is not one of the most daunting ever assembled.

Race 5

(3) TALLERTHANWOODY was out forever in latest and wider than that a long way. Passed a couple of duds in there. Moves in for this after the win two back and looms large for the whole ball of wax. (9) ZOOMIN JESSE was second to a tough-to-beat winner in last. He should be tighter this evening and looks like the main threat despite a modest jump in company. (4) TUSCARORA BLUEROAN has been competitive facing this kind in some recent and can take a piece.

Race 6

(7) JUNES SUNNY BOY faces one the weaker fields on the card and has closed well last two efforts. (1) LUCKY BRAD has the rail and enough speed to hit the engine but staying power has been lacking. (9) EARLYMORNINARRIVAL just seems faster than the rest of these and it's that simple.

Race 7

(3) BAY SHARK showed marked improvement in last but was outfinished with a win in sight. If he is tighter tonight he will be hard to run down. (2) STORMY GHOST has shown speed and will argue the early point. (4) AUTO PILOT has been nailed in the late stages two of last three.

Race 8

(4) GALE FORCE HANOVER is nothing but sharp right now wins all over the card. (1) HAPPY GO JAMIE has the rail and speed and could get lucky. (2) FRIDAYSCOMIN needs to stay flat but that has been a problem.

Race 9

(6) LEGAL BRIEF finished well in last after shipping in. Should be tough with modest improvement. (2) SAY IT AINT SOHO seeks third straight and is hard to fault in current form. (3) BOILER BREES won last going away and will be tough with covered trip.

Race 10

(5) LUCKY CHARM has shown some modest improvement last two and ships in to a reduced level. (2) STOLEN CROWN won last with big finish and looms as a solid contender in here. (1) FUTURE PAST has big closing kick on best but was too far back in last to make it matter.

Race 11

(5) PRIME TIME POPPA was claimed in last (a winning effort versus this kind) and seems more than ready to repeat. (9) DRIVEN TO SUCCEED jogged versus weaker and could be tough if he gets in position to launch a late rally. (1) FOX VALLEY MERCURY ships in and draws the rail facing weaker. Gets an automatic look.

Race 12

(5) BIT OF LOOKS was all out to nail third in last. Faces weaker and looks to be the one to beat in here.(2) BEAUTY CHIP has been racing at Hoosier and Hazel against slightly better. (8) NORMAS ROSE has to overcome the post to get involved but has been facing better.

Race 13

(4) SONICPEDIA is sharp now. Shipped in for last, wired the field and was claimed. Seeks fourth win in last seven outings. (1) VISAGE HANOVER has speed and the rail and will be going as far as he can. (7) J F COOKIN has yet to win this year but has shown modest late foot in most recent.

Race 14

(7) BACKDRAFT HANOVER has stepped up his game last two and looks to be a serious late threat. (2) WATTAFINE RUSTY goes better from the inside and here he is. (1) GUNMANS ACE was in the second tier in last and got away decently. Should get away even better from the rail and be close throughout.

Race 15

(1) GO SMARTY BRAND has no excuse tonight. Has been knocking, in fact he has been pounding at the door in all recent. (3) RUFF STUFF JACKSON was parked and pressed in game second two back over this track and will be hard to beat. (5) FREDSABULLDOG has been game but not tough enough last two. They only stay sharp enough for so long at this level.

DRF HARNESS

Race 6 - $10,000 Guaranteed Pick Four Pool

Best Bet ( 25 - 40 / $104.80): ROCK HOLLYWOOD (5th)

Spot Play: JESSE HILL (3rd)

Race 1

(4) MACIE RAE has proven to be the best so far outgaming her opponents; short price. (1) SAY NO MO filly has a big burst of speed if she can stay trotting. (2) BAILEY'S WISH has been on the improve and will be sitting a perfect trip.

Race 2

(3) JOYFUL ROCK filly showed big-time potential in her debut and should show good improvement. (5) GIRLS HUNT TOO makes her first lifetime start off two nice qualifiers; threat. (8) DUNESIDE PERTTIE filly closed up nicely last out and looks to be a threat with some racing luck.

Race 3

(6) JESSE HILL broke last start after coming up empty the start prior, however the Indiana bred has ability when right. (7) OMYGOODNESS mare gets sent out for a hot barn and makes her second start back off a long layoff. (8) ACT OF VALOR well bred trotter has the most upside in the race but could need a start knowing the connections.

Race 4

(8) WATCHBELLEPACE filly has been racing gamely against much better. A similar effort puts the 3-year-old in the winner's circle. (9) MY GIRL PIPPA also faces an easier group and could be one of few threats to the top choice. (2) MEGYN HOTSPUR flashed ability before the time off and gets sent out for a trainer that has them ready when they hit the track.

Race 5

(1) ROCK HOLLYWOOD gelding put in a super effort first start back off a long layoff and will be tough to beat with any improvement. (5) AMEN AMEN five-year-old trotter also needed his last start and finished his mile full of trot. (7) CARDINAL WIND faces older but has flashed some closing ability.

Race 6

In a wide open and tough race to handicap (5) MEAN JD MUSTARD could be sitting on a better effort third start back at a price. (8) SHOOTINFORTHESTARS had a really tough trip last out and things could be different with some racing luck. (6) ITSALLABOUTTONIGHT has just been racing evenly; command price.

Race 7

In another tough race to gauge (5) VIN would fly past everybody late if he minded his manners which is a big if. (7) CLASS STAR raced well being used multiple times last start; threat. (4) MR MUSCLEMANIA has a big burst of speed and is versatile for a provisional driver.

Race 8

(5) ACT OF MAGIC has been unstoppable at this level; fires late. (1) KITTY O'BRIEN is exclusively a back-runner who needs some pace to chase and a live outer flow for her best chance. (6) CARNOUSTIE was once a lot better than these but has not been sharp lately; use underneath.

Race 9

(4) CASINO COMP probably has the most ability in the race but the driver is the question mark. (1) CAMS SAHBRA has been dreadful this year but has put in some big efforts from time to time in the past. The pacer gets the rail and a suspect field to try his luck. (5) SUSAN SARANDUNE just missed last out to the top choice and will look to get some separation early.
