Red Sox vs. Cubs
Recommendation: Red Sox -150
Bostonlooks to avoid getting swept by the Cubs on Wednesday and they’ll turn toBrandon Workman to help them get the job done. After coming out of the bullpen tostart the season, Workman has proved to be much more efficient as a starter. Hehas a solid 3.21 ERA in his 9 career starts. He pitched well against theYankees his last time out, despite running into some home run trouble in the 4[SUP]th[/SUP]inning. Workman has proven that he can get out of jams, continually getting histeam off the field with runners on base.
The Soxstarters have also pitched very well at home this season, with the 3[SUP]rd[/SUP]lowest home ERA in the league. Their main problem has been run support. Workmanhas been on the short end of that stick a lot, but they should be able to turnit around tonight against Cubs starter Travis Wood.
Woodhad a stellar year in 2013, but this year has been very inconsistent. He’scurrently only had 9 quality starts in his 16 YTD. One of the biggest problemsfor wood has been his command, as he walked 5 batters against Washington in hislatest start. Free passes are exactly what the Sox need to help their offensecome alive tonight. Despite losing the first two games of this set, Bostonremains solid at home, winning 10 of their last 14 games at Fenway. I’ll lookfor them to add to that total tonight. Take the Red Sox.
Giants vs. Cardinals
Recommendation: UNDER 6.5
Despitethe Giants win yesterday, this club is playing terrible ball right now. Just amonth ago, give or take, San Fran was 9.5 games ahead of the Dodgers in the NLwest. Going into last night’s contest, they were tied for the division lead. The problem is opposite than in recent years. In the recent past, the Giantshave always had stellar pitching but the offense has always been an issue. Theywent years where it was hard to find a way to score runs. This year, the Giantsjumped out of the gate with some great lineup production, only to find that thepitching staff wasn’t up to the standard that it has been for so many years.
RyanVogelsong does not fall into the category of bad starting pitching as of late. The back of the rotation starter held to Reds to a single run his last timeout, but got no help from the offense, which is currently in a huge funk. Itwon’t help that they have to face Adam Wainwright on Wednesday, a guy who isfighting with Clayton Kershaw for the early season CY young predictions.
Wainwrightis 2-1 with a 1.16 ERA in June. He’s no question one of the best pitchers inthe game and that will make runs very hard to come by for the Giants. At firstglance I was looking to play the Cards on the side, but with St. Louis beingshut out in consecutive games and plating only 1 run over their last 3, I thinkthe total is the better way to go. Take the Giants-Cardinals UNDER.
Padres vs. Reds
Recommendation: UNDER 6
Thiswrite-up is pretty short and sweet. I’ve gotten beat two nights in a row by theFriars, who shut out the Reds in game 1 of the series and decided to score someruns for once last night. I’ll look to the total tonight because I absolutelylove these two starting pitchers.
I’m notgoing to bore you with stats in this one. Every sports bettor knows that Cuetois one of the biggest talents in the league. He’s fully capable of shutting outthis Padres lineup even if he doesn’t have his best stuff. On the other side, Ibelieve that Tyson Ross in one of the most underrated pitchers around. This guyhas electric stuff and should have no problem dealing with the Reds lineup thatapparently forgot to bring their bats to San Diego. This game has UNDER writtenall over it. Take the Padres-Reds UNDER.
