I was looking to take a stab at the stock market world! I really know nothing about stocks and what to look for so I thought I would get the opinions of the good ole RX'ers. I'm very skeptical of information if I were to go onto websites etc etc... Seems like sucker bets to me. So for a first timer looking to invest 5-10k what's a good game plan to get started in? Just seems to be so many questions and options on what to do!

1. I am more open to a longer term investment and something I may hold onto for a few years.

2. I would prefer maybe investing in just 2-3 stocks and keep it simple

3. I would prefer to invest in something I can understand and take my own personal knowledge and apply it to decesion making. For example I spend quite a bit of time within the world of physics and space. I would feel more comfortable looking into companies who may focus technology in this area. I know our space program and Russia are at ends as of now and this is what drew me to looking into the world of stocks. Gut feeling and just as some sports bets you just go with a gut feeling. I know the space travel world has some new hype coming in with Spacex (Falcon 9 Rocket) and Blue Origin but I was more interested in something our government may put to use for satellites and more cost efficent rockets which we use for these adventures in the growing defence system information.

4. I'm familiar with the big boys such as lockheed martin and boeing. But they have their hands in a bit of everything it seems. So I was looking to look into smaller comapanies which may focus more on specific technology mainly geared towards new and cheaper fuel powered rockets.

5. Keepin with the theme I am familiar with articles over the years with Rocketdyne and Aerojet and their hands in this field. They seem to keep within the fences of new rocket development but I'm not sure how strong their resources and finacial backing are. One if not both of these companies have been bought out or teamed up with another company I believe.

6. Russia uses what I believe is the RD-180 and as I mentioned earlier, I wonder if we grant out and look to invest government wise into our own backyard for more cost efficient and better fuel/alternative rockets.

So this is a little of what led me to looking into investing in some stocks. But as I mentioned I'm new to anything investing wise in regards to the stock market. So I would really enjoy any feedback and advice from the fellow guy's on the board with any tid bits on how to get started and what to look for... Please even feel free to share your own stories of how you got into stocks and how well you adjusted to investing...

I got in the stock market in May of this year and it's not as hard as I thought. I ended up using Scottrade for my brokerage account since fees are $7 a trade (sell, buy, etc.) The hardest part for me was to deposit 10k in account since there is waiting period unless you wire the money which I did. I can give you a referral code so you can get 3 free trades if you want to sign up for Scottrade. As for stocks to buy, always buy stock you are familiar with the technology if you can and stay away from penny stocks. I admit I am in a stock I have no clue about but researched the technology and feel its going to succeed in the long run. Playing the stock market is much better than betting sports IMO and wish I started years ago. Good luck and let me know if you want the code for 3 free trades.

This is not a good moment to be "investing" into the worldwide legalized criminal behemoth casino. The entire financial system is a complete and utter joke and clearly on the brink of a reset. Know nothing about space and physics so not saying there isn't money to be made in this sector going forward but the macro is looking brutal.

Nothing truly insightful to say about investing other then make sure to contact the company and try to get to know the people. And of course check their history. At the end of the day most times management is the number one factor in determining where a company is heading.

Also finding a good entry point is always nice. ie. If a stock is riding high inevitably it will usually pull back after the excitement is over. Try to decipher what catalysts will propel it higher, markets get bored easily if nothing is happening.
