I think within the next 5 years, I'm going to open my own place and work for myself. Won't be easy and surely will be a lot of hard work but think it would be rewarding. I LOVE the idea of a saloon based on the 1920's. The big oak bar, the classic furniture, the piano player and the jazz. It wouldn't be a sports bar or a club. A more classy joint with the exposed brick, classic cocktails and great food. You just don't see these types of things anymore. The "speakeasy" look. Thoughts? Being totally serious.

Sounds like a great idea.

My vision would be one in which a table orders cocktails and instead of the barmaid bringing them out, I'd have a few floating bartenders that actually bring their supplies up to the table on a cart and mix the drinks at the table all the while telling you exactly why they do what they do with some history of the alcohol etc. It's an experience not just lunch.

Needs to be city Noonan or at least not the country. My vision is a staircase downstairs into a brick space like you used to see during prohibition. Haven't even thought about a city. Too far off. But, if you are different, do what you do and do it well and work hard, I think it can work. Consistency is so important in that business.

That scares me a bit MattyMatt. Haven't worked in the industry in roughly 17 years or so. I know business but it's been awhile in the food industry. This isn't something just to jump into though. You'd have to do a ton of research so you aren't just going in blind. And, of course, surround yourself with a staff of absolute studs to get you off and running. Why do you say rough business to be in? Curious.

9/10 restaurants/bars fail.

Profit margins are slim. It is not like many businesses where once you achieve a certain level you are on cruise control.

The bar business chewed me up and spit me out. Without a doubt the hardest 5 years of my life in terms of work. Cost me friends, money and surely took years off of my life.

I don't really know whether the concept will work but i do know from experience that it is very tough business in general.

i am no expert in this area (only put in a semester waiting tables when I was out of college with ruptured appendix)....but I would look for an upscale area in a theater district or something....my guess is you would be targeting an early 40s and older crowd and the tough part about that is those folks don't go out as consistently...i don't want to / mean to talk you out of your dream, but I think that there is a reason there are not that many of those types of places....by the time you pay a decent musician to get people in the door, the rent, the staff and buy all permits, equipment, insurance and supplies you need, you have to slang a lot of drinks and food to start making decent money.....good luck tho!

The line that I hate most in life. If business weren't personal, nobody would do it.

Why not something with less risk?

Just from my perspective, the most popular bars I've been to, that aren't clubs, have a niche. Either a nice location or they brew some of their own beer. People love local brews. If you don't have a location, bomb ass food, or unique beer, it's tough to get people to go with all the options.

I guess I look at that saying a little differently than you. I look at it to mean when making business decisions, nothing should be taken personal and no matter what happens, the personal relationship should not get in the way of business decisions.

I like the idea but I think u have to incorporate a sports bar....maybe the 1920s theme is downstairs and upstairs u have the modern sportsbar so you dont lose customers that want to go to the bar to watch the game or the fight.
