Derek Jeter is an All-Star one last time.
For the ninth time in his career, Jeter was announced tonight as the American League’s starting shortstop. He is the seventh player in A.L. history to be elected by the fans at least nine times. It is his 14th All-Star selection overall.
"It feels good," Jeter said. "I’ve told you guys all along, All Star Games are fun. I’m happy I get the opportunity to come back here. It’ll be special for me. It’ll be the last one for me, so I’m glad I have the opportunity to go."
Jeter dismissed the idea that he might be the focus of attention at this year's All-Star Game. That's certainly what happened with Mariano Rivera last year, but Jeter said he thinks this is a different situation.
"The All Star game was in New York last year, know what I mean?" Jeter said. "So it’s a little bit different. I don’t go into it with any expectations. I’m just going to try to enjoy myself and have fun with whoever’s here."
For whatever it's worth, I'm guessing Jeter's wrong. I would bet that this year's All-Star Game absolutely will be a celebration of Jeter's career.
