Game of the Day: CFL double header

Winnipeg Blue Bombers at Montreal Alouettes (-2.5, 49.5)

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers take their red-hot offence to Montreal on Friday to face the Alouettes. Winnipeg won its first two games at home, scoring a league-leading 81 points. The Alouettes' defence looked strong in their Week 2 home opener, but will have its hands full against Drew Willy and the Blue Bombers’ passing game.

Alouettes quarterback Troy Smith will need his team’s defence to be strong again unless he can begin throwing touchdowns. Willy is off to a flying start under centre for Winnipeg, completing 40-of-60 passes and throwing four touchdowns, but Montreal’s defensive line promises to be the toughest he has faced. Alouettes defensive end John Bowman recorded four sacks in Week 2, while defensive tackle Scott Paxson caught an interception and forced a fumble.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, TSN

LINE HISTORY: Books opened the Als as 2.5-point home faves. The total opened 50.5 at most shops, but has dropped one point to 49.5.

ABOUT THE BLUE BOMBERS (2-0): Running back Nic Grigsby is quickly becoming a star in Winnipeg, recording 251 combined yards (184 rushing) and three touchdowns. Willy is also working well with slotbacks Aaron Kelly and Nick Moore, who have received 283 of Willy’s 615 passing yards. Kick returner Aaron Woods leads the league in return yards with 287.

ABOUT THE ALOUETTES (1-1): Smith completed nine touchdown passes as a rookie in 2013, but has zero touchdowns, one interception and a 50 percent pass-completion rate through two starts in 2014. Linebacker Marc-Olivier Brouillette caught the second interception of his career in Week 2 - something he will expected to do more of in his expanded role within the defence. Running back Brandon Whitaker has 135 rushing yards and is on pace to have his best season since 2011.

TRENDS:

* Under is 6-0 in Alouettes last six games overall.
* Blue Bombers are 5-1 ATS in their last six meetings in Montreal.
* Under is 9-4-1 in the last 14 meetings in Montreal.

COVERS CONSENSUS: Sixty-three percent of wagers on Covers Consensus are coming in on the Alouettes.

Ottawa Redblacks at Edmonton Eskimos (-6.5, 54.5)

The Ottawa Redblacks visit the Edmonton Eskimos on Friday looking for their first victory after letting their CFL debut slip away. Edmonton looks strong on offence and defence through two games but has yet to establish a running game. Ottawa stormed out of the gate in its first game before being outscored 19-7 in the second half and will need to play a full game against the Eskimos.

Veteran quarterback Henry Burris looks like he hasn’t lost a step with his new team, throwing for 241 yards and two touchdowns in his Redblacks debut. Burris will face an Edmonton defence that has recorded a league-high seven interceptions. Eskimos quarterback Mike Reilly has better protection in front of him to start 2014 and it shows in his 68 percent completion rate and four touchdowns.

TV: 10 p.m. ET, TSN

LINE HISTORY: The Eskimos opened -6.5 and the total has also held at the opening number of 54.5.

ABOUT THE REDBLACKS (0-1): Running back Chevon Walker made the move to Ottawa from the Hamilton Tiger-Cats along with Burris and recorded 99 combined yards and two touchdowns in his debut. Defensive back Jerrell Gavins caught an interception in his CFL debut but was fined for a late and low hit on Winnipeg Blue Bombers quarterback Drew Willy. Defensive lineman Jonathan Williams matched a career-high with two sacks in his first Redblacks game.

ABOUT THE ESKIMOS (2-0): Defensive lineman Odell Willis was fined for a hit on Hamilton Tiger-Cats quarterback Zach Collaros after replays revealed contact with Collaros’ neck. Edmonton signed former Alouettes running back Noel Devine in an effort to bolster its running game. Kicker Grant Shaw leads the league in kicking points with 25.

TRENDS:

* Eskimos are 0-4 ATS in their last four home games.
* Eskimos are 0-4 ATS in their last four games in July.
* Over is 18-8-1 in Eskimos last 27 games overall.

COVERS CONSENSUS: Fifty-nine percent of wagers on Covers Consensus are backing Edmonton.

Kuroda lights out on the Under vs. Orioles
Stephen Campbell

If you've been backing the Under when in New York Yankees pitcher Hiroki Kuroda's starts against the Baltimore Orioles as of late, you've been collecting some fantastic profits. In the veteran's last nine outings against the O's, the Under is 8-0-1. Kuroda takes the mound when the Yanks visit Baltimore at Oriole Park at Camden Yards Friday.

BetOnline.com presently lists the Birds as slight -116 faves with a total of nine.

Under the hot bet with Wood on the road
Stephen Campbell

When Atlanta Braves pitcher Alex Wood pitches away from home, low-scoring games are the norm. In Wood's last six road starts, the Under is 5-1. He'll take the mound for the Braves when they visit the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field Friday.

BetOnline.com currently has the game as a pick 'em.

MLB Betting News and Notes - Week #15
•Yanks Put Beltran On DL, Recall Solarte: The New York Yankees placed outfielder Carlos Beltran on the seven-day concussion disabled list Thursday after a batting practice mishap. The Yankees also recalled infielder Yangervis Solarte from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre after sending him down last week. Beltran has two fractured bones in his face after being struck by a batted ball during batting practice Wednesday. A ball that Beltran hit bounced off the screen protecting the pitcher and struck his eye.

The 37-year-old has hit just .216 with nine home runs and 28 RBIs in 61 games. Solarte was immediately placed in the starting lineup at third base for Thursday night's game at Cleveland. Solarte, who opened the season hitting .336 in his first 34 games but only .187 in his last 37 games, was sent down to Triple-A on July 3. Solarte, a non-roster invitee, came out of nowhere during spring training to beat out Eduardo Nunez for the 25th spot on the team. He then won the third base job over Kelly Johnson, with six home runs and 29 RBIs over the first two months of the season.

•Astros Trade RHP Doran To White Sox: The Houston Astros traded right-handed pitcher Bobby Doran to the Chicago White Sox for a player to be named later, the teams announced Thursday. The White Sox assigned Doran to Triple-A Charlotte. He had a 5.36 ERA in 80 2/3 innings for Triple-A Oklahoma prior to the trade.

•Yadier Molina To Miss 8-12 Weeks With Torn Thumb Ligament: Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina has a torn ligament in his right thumb and will miss 8-12 weeks following surgery, the team announced. Molina exited Wednesday's game with the injury after sliding into third base, though it was a foot-first slide. Molina, 31, is one of the most durable catchers in baseball. He has started at least 128 games behind the plate every year from 2009-13, and his 1,083 games at catcher since 2006 are the most in baseball. A knee problem sent him to the disabled list last season for the first time since 2007.

In 83 games and 335 plate appearances this season, Molina is hitting .287/.341/.409 (109 OPS+) with 16 doubles and seven home runs. He hit .313/.361/.481 (130 OPS+) from 2011-13. The injury is a huge blow to the Cardinals, both offensively and defensively. With Molina out, St. Louis figures to rely on the catching tandem of Tony Cruz and Audry Perez. Cruz has hit .233/.270/.323 (63 OPS+) as Molina's backup since 2012. St. Louis has won three straight games and come into Thursday with a 50-42 record. They are two games back of the top spot in the NL Central and tied for the second wild-card spot.

•Reds' Phillips To Miss 8-12 Weeks: Cincinnati Reds second baseman Brandon Phillips will miss eight to 12 weeks following surgery for a torn thumb ligament, the team announced Thursday. Phillips suffered his injury while making a sliding catch in the eighth inning of Wednesday's game against the Chicago Cubs. He wore a splint as he left the clubhouse. Phillips, 33, has hit .272 with 19 doubles and seven home runs in 86 games this year. The Reds promoted infielder Kris Negron from Triple-A Louisville after injuries to center fielder Billy Hamilton (hamstring) and Phillips.

In Thursday's game, Reds right-hander Homer Bailey left his start against the Cubs in the sixth inning with pain in the patellar tendon of his right knee. Bailey was delivering a 1-2 pitch to Starlin Castro, but he didn't throw the ball while gingerly completing his motion. After a visit from trainer Paul Lessard and manager Bryan Price, he walked off the field and was replaced by the right-hander Sam LeCure. After the game, it was announced that Bailey has a slight knee strain and is expected to make his next start.

Negron, 28, has hit .269 with three home runs with Louisville. He appeared in four games with the Reds in 2012, but that is his only major league experience. The Reds optioned right-hander Carlos Contreras to Louisville to make room on the 25-man roster for Negron. Louisville right-hander Brett Marshall was designated for assignment to make room for Negron on the 40-man roster. Contreras appeared in three games out of the bullpen for the Reds, allowing one run in 4 1/3 innings.

•Angels Placed Struggling C.J. Wilson On 15-Day DL: The Angels have placed left-hander C.J. Wilson on the 15-day disabled list with an ankle injury, the team announced. It is his first visit to the disabled list since becoming a starter during the 2010 season. Wilson, 33, allowed six runs on eight hits in 3 2/3 innings against the Blue Jays on Wednesday. He told reporters his struggles "are not a physical issue" following the game. Wilson has pitched to a 10.26 ERA with a 2.34 WHIP in his last four starts.

Before becoming a starter a few years ago, Wilson battled numerous injury problems, including Tommy John surgery and a broken elbow. He has been incredibly durable since moving into the rotation though, throwing at least 200 innings every year from 2010-12. Wilson has gone 8-6 with a 4.33 ERA in 19 starts and 116 1/3 innings this year. He owns a 3.48 ERA in 958 1/3 innings as a starter since 2010. As a reliever from 2005-09, Wilson had a 4.30 ERA in 280 2/3 innings. In addition to placing Wilson on the DL, the Angels also optioned Cam Bedrosian to the minors and called up both Cory Rasmus and Drew Rucinski. Nick Maronde was designated for assignment as well.

CFL Betting Notes - Week 3
By David Schwab

The new CFL regular season is just two weeks old and Winnipeg and Edmonton’s four straight-up victories are already more than half of their combined win total for 2013. The Blue Bombers made it two straight with last Thursday’s 36-28 victory as 3½-point home favorites over Ottawa with the total going OVER the 53-point closing line.

Saturday’s action started out with Montreal shutting down British Columbia 24-9 as a three-point home underdog with the total staying UNDER 49½ points. The Eskimos remained perfect on the year with a 28-24 win against Hamilton, but they could not cover the closing 4½-point spread as favorites at home. The total in that contest stayed just UNDER the 54-point closing line.

Toronto roared back from an ugly opening week loss with a convincing 48-15 romp over Saskatchewan as a two-point home underdog on Sunday to close-out action in Week 2. The total in that game went OVER the 56-point line.

Friday, July 11

Winnipeg Blue Bombers (2-0 SU, 2-0 ATS) vs. Montreal Alouettes (1-1 SU, 1-1 ATS)

Point-spread: Montreal -2½
Total: 50½

Game Overview

Winnipeg’s new-found success after winning just three games last season has to be heavily attributed to the early play of quarterback Drew Willy. He has thrown for a CFL-high 615 yards in two games while completing 66.7 percent of his throws. The Blue Bombers also lead the league in scoring with 81 points.

It has been a tale of two weeks for the re-tooled Montreal offense. After coming up flat in Week 1 with just eight points, this unit behind quarterback Troy Smith looked much more efficient against BC last week. One of the biggest differences was a rushing attack that gained 203 yards against the Lions.

Betting Trends

The Blue Bombers have covered against the spread in five of their last six trips to Montreal and they are 4-1 ATS in the last five meetings overall. The total has stayed UNDER in nine of the last 14 games played at Percival Molson Stadium.

Ottawa RedBlacks (0-1 SU, 0-1 ATS) vs. Edmonton Eskimos (2-0 SU, 1-1 ATS)

Point-spread: Edmonton -6½
Total: 54½

Game Overview

The RedBlacks looked like a veteran ball club in the first quarter of their first ever CFL regular season game by jumping out to a 21-7 lead over Winnipeg, but their defense could not hold on to preserve a win. Henry Burris looked fairly sharp throwing the ball with 241 yards and two touchdowns while completing passes to seven different players.

Edmonton is halfway to last season’s win total on the strength of quarterback Mike Reilly’s arm. He completed 29-of-40 attempts for 253 yards against Hamilton last week after putting up similar numbers in an opening week victory against BC. Also give credit to a much-improved Eskimos’ defense that was ranked second-to-last in points allowed last year.

Betting Trends

The Eskimos come into this inter-division matchup with a 0-4 record ATS in their last four home games and they are 1-4 ATS in their last five games following a SU win. The total has gone OVER in six of Edmonton’s last nine games following a win SU.

Saturday, July 12

Calgary Stampeders (1-0 SU, 1-0 ATS) vs. Toronto Argonauts (1-1 SU, 1-1 ATS)

Point-spread: Toronto -1½
Total: 53

Game Overview

Calgary enjoyed the week off after posting an impressive 29-8 victory over Montreal in Week 1 as a 7½-point favorite at home. Bo Levi Mitchell established himself as the new starting quarterback for the Stampeders with 313 yards passing and two touchdowns while completing 64 percent of his throws.

The Argonauts are another team from the East that quickly returned to form after getting crushed in a 45-21 loss to Winnipeg in Week 1 as seven-point road favorites. Ricky Ray was at his best this past Sunday with 407 yards passing and three touchdown throws. Toronto rolled-up 23 fourth quarter points to blow a tight game wide open.

Betting Trends

The Stampeders have had their share of problems at the Rogers Centre with a 1-5 record ATS in their last six trips there. They are just 1-7 ATS in the last eight meetings overall and the total has gone OVER in four of the last five meetings in Toronto.

British Columbia Lions (0-2 SU, 0-2 ATS) vs. Saskatchewan Roughriders (1-1 SU, 1-1 ATS)

Point-spread: Saskatchewan -6½
Total: 48½

Game Overview

BC came into the new season as 5Dimes’ favorite to win this year’s Grey Cup title and while a 0-2 start is not the end of the world, this week’s game suddenly looks like a must win. The offense sputtered under quarterback Kevin Glenn so the Lions turned to John Beck in later part of Saturday’s loss in hopes of finding a suitable replacement for the injured Travis Lulay, who remains out with a shoulder injury.

The defending champs played the part in a 31-10 season-opening victory against Hamilton as 3 ½-point home favorites, but they had no answer for Toronto in Week 2. Darian Durant threw for 295 yards and two scores against the Argonauts, but two costly interceptions including one that was returned 108 yards for a touchdown certainly did not help Saskatchewan’s cause.

Betting Trends

The Lions have gone just 1-3-1 ATS in their last five road games against their West Division rivals and the total in this matchup has stayed UNDER in five of the last six meetings at Mosaic Stadium. The home team has won six of the last eight meetings SU.

Brewers replace Estrada with Nelson in rotation
By THE SPORTS XCHANGE

MILWAUKEE -- Before his team took the field to face Philadelphia on Thursday afternoon, Milwaukee Brewers manager Ron Roenicke was asked whether or not right-hander Marco Estrada would still make his scheduled start Saturday against the Cardinals.

Considering Estrada struggled lately, posting a 2-4 record and a 6.53 ERA in his last seven starts while giving up 10 of his MLB-leading 27 home runs, it was a logical question but one Roenicke wasn't going to answer.

"I won't comment on that," he said.

Hours after the Brewers melted down late for a 9-1 loss, their fifth in a row and ninth in their last 10 games, the question was answered as Milwaukee summoned right-hander Jimmy Nelson from Triple-A Nashville.

Nelson has been lights-out while waiting for his moment. In 17 games (16 starts), he is 10-2 with a 1.46 ERA and has struck out 114 in 111 innings of work.

In one spot start for the Brewers this season, Nelson threw five scoreless innings against the Miami Marlins, allowing five hits and three walks with six strikeouts.

With Nelson in the fold and slated to start Saturday against St. Louis' Adam Wainwright, the MLB ERA leader, Estrada, will move to the bullpen.

The Brewers' front office and coaching staff had been debating the move for a while, Roenicke said.

"We're in discussions all the time about this and what to do, and how do we improve," Roenicke said. "Not just with other people, but how do we improve internally with what we have?

"Sometimes you wait until the all-star break to do things. But when the timing calls for something to be done, you try to do it. If it makes sense right then, why wait on something? That's what we talk about all the time. We talk about what goes on in here, how guys are feeling right now, and do we need a change?"

To make room for Nelson on the roster, Milwaukee placed left-hander Wei-Chung Wang to the 15-day disabled list with tightness in his shoulder.

Wang, a 22-year-old Rule 5 pick out of the Pirates' organization last winter, has been used sparingly this season -- with little to show for it.

In 13 appearances, Wang allowed 21 earned runs in 17 innings of work, including six home runs.

As a Rule 5 pick, the Brewers are required to keep him on the 25-man roster all season or return him to Pittsburgh for $25K.

However, once players have been on the active roster for at least 90 days -- a threshold Wang crossed on June 27 -- the player can be placed on the disabled list without the team losing contractual control.

Milwaukee, though, will have to keep Wang on its active roster next season for as many days as he spends on the DL.

'NL West rivals clash'

When Giants Tim Lincecum takes the mound against Michael Bolsinger and the Diamondbacks Friday evening the hurlers are coming at this game from opposite ends of the spectrum. Sports bettors will be quick to note that Lincecum, has been on fire riding a three game winning streak that began with his June 25 no-hitter followed by two outings of 1 run ball over 14 1/3 innings giving the hurler a sparkling 0.39 ERA over the span. On the other mound, his opponent heads to the hill winless in six attempts and has just one victory in eight starts (1-7 TSR). Playing San Francisco has been a risky proposition of late (8-21), though in this case the amount of supporting data in favor of Giants with Lincecum makes it much less risky. The Giants have won 12 of Lincecum's last 16 home starts, Giants have won 6-of-9 as a favorite opening a home series with the right-hander and have a 20-8 stretch vs divisional opponents with the hurler. The numbers add up well enough to conclude Giants are the right play.
