Milwaukee Brewers shortstop Jean Segura has left the team and returned to his native Dominican Republic following the death of his 9-month-old son.
Brewers manager Ron Roenicke announced the tragic news Saturday, saying that Segura had been placed on the bereavement list.
Brewers shortstop Jean Segura returned home to the Dominican Republic following the death of his 9-month old son.
Roenicke said that Segura did not learn about his son's death until after Friday's game against the St. Louis Cardinals.
"Obviously it's tough on him," Roenicke told reporters, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. "He didn't learn about it until after the game was over and one of the players came over and told him."
The Brewers released a statement on their official Twitter account Saturday afternoon, saying that the organization extends "our deepest condolences to Jean Segura and his family."
Roenicke did not disclose specific details about the boy's death and did not know when Segura would rejoin the team.
Following Friday night's game against the Cardinals, Roenicke made a brief statement that the Brewers would not address the media and would shut the clubhouse doors, citing a death in the family of an unnamed player.
"I didn't know what to say to him other than give him a hug, tell him we're here for him," Roenicke said Saturday, according to the Journal Sentinel. "He had a tough time. All the guys came by."
The Brewers recalled infielder Elian Herrera from Triple-A Nashville on Saturday to replace Segura on the active roster.
