Braves @ Cubs
Recommendation: Braves -132
Here wehave a matchup of two squads not playing their best baseball right now. TheBraves came out of an offensive slump yesterday putting up 11 runs in theirwin. Even Mike Minor got in on the action with a home run of his own. Thatshould at least give Atlanta some confidence heading into today’s game withChicago. The Braves are battling for 1[SUP]st[/SUP] in the NL East and wouldsurely like to string together some wins before the All-Star break.
Speakingof All-Stars, Julio Teheran has pitched magnificently this year. He hit a bumpin the road giving up 5 earned in his last start to the Mets, but he willsurely bounce back today, as he has had great success against the Cubs. Teheranhad a 1.86 ERA in his previous 4 starts. Travis Wood will be on the other side.He has been more of the opposite, putting up a 5.31 ERA in his last 4. Hisstuff just isn’t there right now, and that’s not likely to change while facinga power laden Atlanta lineup.
TheCubs have lost 7 of 9 and will be playing for exercise the rest of the season. This game mainly comes down to the pitching matchup, as neither lineup canreally be relied upon. Significant advantage to ATL in that category and it’sworth laying a little juice to pick up a win. Take the Braves.
Dodgers vs. Padres
Recommendation: UNDER 7
ThePadres offensive woes continue pretty much every night. They came up with agoose egg again yesterday, losing 1-0 to LA. That’s no surprise as the Friarshave been shut out more than any team in baseball this year. They’re hitting awoeful .214 and averaging less than 3 RPG. With how bad they’ve been at theplate, the pitching has been great for San Diego. That figures to continuetonight with Tyson Ross on the hill.
Ross isone of the more underrated pitchers in the game due to the fact that he playsfor a horrible ball club that’s located in a small market, but this guy canflat out pitch. He’s got a 1.86 ERA in his last 4 and overpowers hitters nearlyevery time out. The Dodgers are not playing good offensive ball either so thisis the last person they want to see on the mound today. Only 7 runs have beenput up in LA’s last 4 ballgames. They’ll put Hyun-jin Ryu on the bump.
Ryu hasstruggled lately, but this start figures to be the perfect opportunity to getback on track. It’s been a struggle with command for Ryu, something he says he’sworked out in between starts. Even an average outing from him will be enough toshut down the Padres lineup. Both pitchers have solid FIP’s against each other,so this game figures to be low scoring. The final total may not be 1 like itwas last night, but it will surely be less than 7. Take the UNDER.
