Lance Stephenson will play for the Charlotte Hornets for the next three seasons. His contract is worth $27 million, according to league sources.
The deal was signed early Wednesday morning after Hornets owner Michael Jordan, general manager Rich Cho, head coach Steve Clifford and associate head coach Patrick Ewing met with Stephenson and his representatives Tuesday night in Las Vegas.

The contract, which includes a team option for the final season, ends Stephenson's productive yet volatile stay with the Indiana Pacers.
The Pacers offered Stephenson a five-year, $44 million contract on July 1. But Stephenson, who led the league in triple-doubles, felt the offer undervalued him.

"Lance is forever grateful for all the love he's received from Pacers fans. He is especially grateful to his teammates, [Pacers coach] Frank Vogel, [owner] Herb Simon, the Pacers management and most of all, Larry Bird," Stephenson's agent, Alberto Ebanks, said in a statement. "While we tried our best to come to the best possible terms for both sides, there was not sufficient flexibility in the terms of the contract, particularly the length of the contract.

"Reports throughout the negotiation process with Indiana have often strayed from the truth but suffice it to say that it was less about the money. Lance will miss the city, the team and the mentor who helped transform him into the dynamic player he has become. He looks forward to making a strong contribution and beginning a new chapter with the Charlotte Hornets."

The Pacers were unwilling to offer Stephenson a shorter deal, spanning two or three years, sources said. Indiana was also unwilling to increase its offer.

The Dallas Mavericks had a two-year, $20 million offer on the table to Stephenson, contingent on the Houston Rockets matching their offer for forward Chandler Parsons. If Houston had matched, Stephenson would have signed with Dallas, sources said.

Like many teams, the Hornets, while fans of Stephenson's play, had concerns about his antics and attitude. But sources say those concerns were alleviated in Tuesday's face-to-face meeting.

Pacers teammates were upset when Stephenson was goaded into his second technical foul in a March win over Miami and again when he publicly challenged LeBron James & Co. during the playoffs. Stephenson also got into a practice scuffle with teammate Evan Turner during the playoffs and was even criticized by Bird, one of Stephenson's biggest fans, after he blew into the ear of James during Game 5 of the Eastern Conference finals.

Has some skills, but more than anything, he is a clown and a distraction!

yeah he must be even more insane behind the scenes if the Pacers didn't try harder to bring him back. Good gamble for a team like the Bobcats though, he is only 23 so he could shapeup and it weakens a conference opponent.

I agree the guy is solid but his outside of basketball smarts seem to be minimal.

I think he lost out quite a bit by not signing with Pacers and doing the free agent thing... he will be missing those lost millions

huh?

he did do the free agent thing....thats why he isn't with the Pacers.

what I don't understand is how the pacer's are undervaluing him at 8.8 mil/season but he is happy going to the hornets for 9 mil/season.

I thought the same thing, but from reading it, it seems like he didn't want to sign a long term deal. Probably thinks he can get more after 2-3 years I bet.

The reason is because all Indy would offer him is 5yrs (likely because they didn't want him back and knew it would piss him off)

In 3 years the cap will be like 25-30% higher than it is now and he can hit FA again at the age of 26 and cash in provided he keeps his head on straight.

8.8 million won't be much higher than the league avg for a starter then.

I forgot about the new bargaining/tv contract.....short term deal is what they all want kind of like lebron.

still...8.8 vs 9 isn't that much. the 2 years might be the issue.....but he is no superstar yet....he might've been better with a longer contract.

Unless he just goes off the rails I doubt it. He is a pretty good player...7 boards, 5 assists from SG, led the league in triple-doubles, shot close to 50%, very good defender. He just kinda lost the game of musical chairs after the Mavs got Parsons.

I'd probably make it like -300 that he makes more than 44 over the next 5 years playing basketball. Unless there is another lockout or something.

For comparisons sake, Avery Bradley and Channing Frye got 8mill a year this offseason. This guy will get more if he straightens up, he cost himself like 20 mill this offseason because the whole league thinks hes insane right now. I hope that blowing into LeBrons ear sexually stimulated him, because it was about 100x more expensive than a hooker would've been.

I realize everyone is playing into this 2 yrs from now higher cap thing.. for people like lebron or max players it makes sense.. for stephenson it does not as he is a midlevel salary and even his own team basically insulted him (but made him guaranteed more)... that is why I kind of laugh at his contract with a much weaker team than pacers were and would have been.. its like signing for same or less money with a squad that has no shot. Anyone who thinks Charlotte will be in the East Conference Finals out there over Pacers (if they even make it either) is crazy if you ask me. puff_>>

Even Indiana didnt change much at 16 to 1 to win title.. Charlotte meanwhile is 120 to 1 :ohno:

My entire point was Stephenson chose the wrong path IMO.

It was a smart choice by him to sign a short term deal. For starters understand his mindset. He feels he was the best player on the Pacers & felt insulted by their long term offer. When he approached them for lesser years instead, the Pacers offered even less. They were not offering the per year money in the short term like the Hornets are.

So he decided to bet on himself that he will be an all star in the league. By signing a short term deal, he gets a decent payday now, goes to a place & tries to show he is an all star who matures & on the next contract, he gets the real big dollars. It is a win-win for both sides as if by some reason he is trouble, the Hornets have a team option for the 3rd year.
