INFORMATION WORTH BETTING ON EACH DAY
_______________________________________

#911 TEXAS @ #912 NY YANKEES - 7:05 PM
•Rangers RH Miles Mikolas (0-2, 10.05 ERA, WHIP: 1.884) - After getting blitzed for nine runs on 12 hits in a loss to Houston on July 7, Mikolas didn't fare much better in his last outing. The 25-year-old allowed five runs (four earned) on nine hits in 5 2/3 innings en route to a 5-2 setback to the Los Angeles Angels on July 12. Mikolas recorded better statistics during his 27 career relief outings with San Diego over the previous two seasons, posting a 2-1 mark while working 34 frames.

•Yankees RH Shane Greene (2-0, 1.32 ERA, WHIP: 0.949) - Greene recorded his best outing to date after scattering four hits and striking out nine in 7 1/3 innings en route to a 3-0 victory over Baltimore on July 12. The 25-year-old rookie will be making his Yankee Stadium debut and is under the spotlight as New York addresses a plethora of injuries to its starting rotation. Greene has made only three appearances - and two starts - but has yielded just one homer in 13 2/3 innings.

#913 BOSTON @ #914 TORONTO - 7:05 PM
•Red Sox RH John Lackey (10-6, 3.79 ERA, WHIP: 1.257) - Lackey was in a rut prior to the All-Star break, going 2-2 with an 8.10 ERA in his last four starts. The veteran surrendered six home runs in that span and issued five walks at Houston in his final outing before the break. Lackey lost his lone outing against Toronto last season and is 5-8 with a 5.43 ERA in 20 career starts against the Blue Jays.

--KEY STAT: LACKEY is 25-8 UNDER (+15.5 Units) when the total is 8.5 to 10 over the last 2 seasons. (Team's Record)
The average score was LACKEY 4.1, OPPONENT 3.5.

•Blue Jays RH Drew Hutchison (6-8, 4.16 ERA, WHIP: 1.296) - Hutchison suffered the loss in four of his last five starts and was lit up for six runs on as many hits and five walks in 5 1/3 innings at Tampa Bay on July 12. Walks have been a problem of late for the 23-year-old, who has completed seven innings once in those last five turns. Hutchison has never lost to Boston, going 2-0 while surrendering just two runs in 12 2/3 total innings.

#915 CLEVELAND @ #916 MINNESOTA - 8:10 PM
•Indians LH T.J. House (1-2, 4.40 ERA, WHIP: 1.533) - House is expected to be recalled from Triple-A Columbus in order to make his ninth start and 10th appearance for Cleveland. The 24-year-old is likely pitching on a limited basis as starter Justin Masterson works his way back from a knee injury. House answered his first major-league win on July 5 by laboring through 4 2/3 innings of a no-decision five days later against the New York Yankees.

•Twins LH Kris Johnson (0-1, 5.40 ERA, WHIP: 2.161) - Johnson struggled mightily in his last outing, permitting a pair of two-run homers and five runs total in four innings en route to a 6-2 setback to Colorado on July 11. The 29-year-old needs to make the most of his time as Ricky Nolasco isn't expected back from flexor pronator stiffness in his right elbow until next month. Johnson held the fort in his lone home start this season on May 1, scattering four hits over 4 1/3 innings before exiting after his pitch count was elevated by six walks.

#917 KANSAS CITY @ #918 CHI WHITE SOX - 8:10 PM
•Royals RH Jeremy Guthrie (5-8, 4.56 ERA, WHIP: 1.347) - Guthrie was lit up for eight runs in four innings against Detroit on July 10 and allowed a total of 14 runs and 19 hits in eight innings over his last two turns. The Oregon native has surrendered 130 hits and 18 home runs in 120 1/3 total innings this season. Guthrie picked up a win at Chicago on June 13, yielding two runs and six hits while walking four and striking out nine in 5 2/3 innings.

--KEY STAT: GUTHRIE is 37-17 UNDER (+17.4 Units) in road games versus an American League team with an on base percentage .330 or worse since 1997. (Team's Record)
The average score was GUTHRIE 3.5, OPPONENT 4.3.

•White Sox LH Chris Sale (8-1, 2.08 ERA, WHIP: 0.842) - Sale got a nice long rest and will make his first start in 11 days while attempting to post his seventh straight quality start. The 25-year-old, who worked an inning for the American League in the All-Star Game on Tuesday, surrendered a total of two runs while striking out 18 and did not issue a walk over 16 2/3 innings in his final two starts before the break. Sale pitched eight scoreless innings to earn a win at Kansas City on April 6, scattering four hits and striking out six.

--KEY STAT: SALE is 8-0 UNDER (+8.0 Units) after giving up <=1 earned runs in his last 2 outings over the last 3 seasons. (Team's Record)
The average score was SALE 1.9, OPPONENT 2.5.

•Diamondbacks LH Vidal Nuno (2-6, 5.10 ERA, WHIP: 1.296) - Nuno was acquired in a trade from the New York Yankees earlier this month and pitched seven scoreless innings in his debut with Arizona before struggling in his second start. The California native surrendered a grand slam to Buster Posey at San Francisco on July 13 and was saddled with the loss. Nuno never got an opportunity to face Detroit while pitching for the Yankees.

#923 NY METS @ #924 SEATTLE - 10:10 PM
•Mets LH Jon Niese (5-4, 2.96 ERA, WHIP: 1.200) - Niese is expected to be activated from the disabled list, where he's resided since July 5 due to a strained left shoulder. The 27-year-old posted back-to-back victories before exiting his start against Texas on July 4 with what was described as a lower back contusion after being hit with a line drive by the third batter of the game. Niese, who has yet to allow more than three earned runs this season, has never faced Seattle.

The 25-year-old Cuban rookie lasted only 3 1/3 frames against Minnesota on July 9 as he was tagged for seven runs - six earned - and seven hits. Elias has not fared well at home during his first season with Seattle, going 2-5 with a 5.14 ERA in 10 outings.

Danny Salazar will return to the major leagues on Tuesday
Drew Silva

MLB.com beat writer Jordan Bastian confirms that the Indians will recall right-hander Danny Salazar from Triple-A Columbus to start Tuesday night against the Twins at Minneapolis’ Target Field.

Salazar opened the 2014 regular season as a member of Cleveland’s starting rotation but was optioned to the minors after posting a rough 5.53 ERA and 1.62 WHIP over his first eight starts. Those struggles continued at Triple-A but he’s been much better lately, boasting a 2.32 ERA and 39 strikeouts over his last 31 innings (five starts) for the Clippers.

Salazar has excellent raw stuff and could provide a nice boost for the big league rotation down the stretch if he’s able to reign in some of his control issues. The 24-year-old posted a promising 3.12 ERA, 1.14 WHIP, and 65/15 K/BB ratio across his first 52 major league frames last season for the Tribe.

Blue Jays, Giants “taking their best shot” at Chase Utley
Drew Silva

Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe drops the following blurb in his weekly Sunday notes column

Chase Utley, 2B, Phillies — Right now it doesn’t appear that Utley is going anywhere because he can invoke his 10-5 rights and it looks as if he wants to remain in Philadelphia. But there’s time. And it hasn’t stopped teams such as the Blue Jays and Giants from taking their best shot, and they likely will through the end of the month.

Toronto second basemen — a mix of Steve Tolleson, Brett Lawrie, Munenori Kawasaki, Ryan Goins, and a couple others — have posted a combined .254/.312/.365 batting line this season. And the Giants just got Marco Scutaro back from the disabled list but can’t count on him to play every day and stay healthy.

Utley is hitting .289/.347/.441 with eight home runs and 46 RBI in 93 games this season at age 35. “I guess we’d have to see at that point,” he told MLB.com’s Todd Zolecki in late June when asked about the possibility of being shopped at the July 31 trade deadline. “But I don’t plan on going anywhere.”

Utley is making $15 million this season, owed $15 million next season, and holds $15 million vesting options for the 2016-2018 campaigns. They vest if he reaches 500 plate appearances in the year previous.

Monday's Tip Sheet
By Kevin Rogers

Giants at Phillies – 7:05 PM EST

Probable Pitchers:
SF: Vogelsong (5-7, 3.86 ERA)
PHI: Lee (4-4, 3.18 ERA)

Previous series recap: The Giants failed to pull off the sweep of the Marlins, falling on Sunday, 3-2 as -130 road favorites. In the first two victories of the series, San Francisco outscored Miami, 14-4, as the Giants have won three of their past four series. The Phillies dropped two of three at Atlanta, including Sunday’s 8-2 setback as +170 underdogs. Philadelphia has lost six of its past seven meetings with Atlanta, while falling to 5-2 in the last seven road contests.

What to watch for: Lee is making his first start since May 18 after spending the last two months on the disabled list with a left elbow injury. The Phillies own a 1-4 record in Lee’s five home outings, in spite of a 1.77 ERA at Citizens Bank Park. The Giants are just 2-6 in their last eight road series openers, while San Francisco has been shut out in each of Vogelsong’s past three starts.

Dodgers at Pirates – 7:05 PM EST

Probable Pitchers:
LAD: Ryu (10-5, 3.44 ERA)
PIT: Volquez (8-6, 3.65 ERA)

Previous series recap: Pittsburgh swept a reeling Colorado squad at home, as the Bucs rallied from a 3-0 deficit for a 5-3 victory on Sunday. The Dodgers were tripped up at St. Louis this past weekend, losing the first two games before holding off the Cardinals on Sunday night as a heavy favorite. Los Angeles has stumbled on the road of late, putting together a 2-5 ledger the last seven away from Chavez Ravine.

What to watch for: The Pirates are on fire at home of late, winning 12 of their past 14 games at PNC Park, including four straight victories in home series openers. The last time these two teams met up at Chavez Ravine in late May, Pittsburgh captured three of four matchups, as the Pirates are 5-2 in the last seven games against the Dodgers. Los Angeles is 6-2 to the ‘under’ the last eight contests, including three of the past four on the highway.

Red Sox at Blue Jays – 7:05 PM EST

Probable Pitchers:
BOS: Lackey (10-6, 3.79 ERA)
TOR: Hutchison (6-8, 4.16 ERA)

Previous series recap: The Red Sox finished off a three-game home sweep of the slumping Royals, including Sunday’s 6-0 shutout of Kansas City as -155 favorites. Boston has won seven of its past eight contests, but still sit six games below the .500 mark. The Blue Jays bounced back from Friday’s loss to the Rangers, as Toronto won the final two games of the series as heavy favorites.

What to watch for: Toronto swept Boston at Fenway Park in late May, as the Jays scored 20 runs in the three victories, resulting in three ‘overs.’ The Red Sox have drilled the ‘over’ in each of Lackey’s last four starts, while Boston is 3-1 in his past four road outings. The Jays have struggled when Hutchison pitches at Rogers Center, as Toronto posted a 2-5 record in his seven home starts.

Reds at Brewers – 8:10 PM EST

Probable Pitchers:
CIN: Latos (2-1, 2.79 ERA)
MIL: Peralta (10-6, 3.72 ERA)

Previous series recap: The Reds were swept by the Yankees in the Bronx, capped off by a walk-off defeat on Sunday, 3-2. Cincinnati fell to 0-5 on the road against American League foes, while slipping to 0-6 in the last six away contests. The Brewers grabbed the series opener at Washington on Friday as a heavy underdog, but lost the final two games, including Sunday’s 5-4 walk-off setback as +115 underdogs.

What to watch for: Cincinnati has performed well against division foes on the road, owning a 9-3 mark in the past 12 games within the NL Central away from the Great American Ballpark. The Brewers have cashed the ‘over’ in each of Peralta’s last six outings, while Milwaukee has dropped seven of its past eight games at Miller Park.

Orioles at Angels – 10:10 PM EST

Probable Pitchers:
BAL: Norris (7-6, 3.96 ERA)
LAA: Shoemaker (7-2, 4.38 ERA)

Previous series recap: The Angels keep rolling at home, improving to 20-3 the last 23 contests at Angels Stadium after rallying past the Mariners on Sunday, 6-5 to cash as heavy -170 favorites. Since May, the Halos have captured 10 consecutive home series, including five straight series finales in Orange County. The Orioles began their West Coast swing by dropping two of three to the Athletics, as Baltimore was blown out on Sunday, 10-2. All three games finished ‘over’ the total at Oakland, extending Baltimore’s road ‘over’ streak to six games.

What to watch for: Monday marks the first meeting between these teams this season, as the Orioles took five of seven matchups in 2013. The Halos are 4-1 in Shoemaker’s five home starts, while L.A. has compiled eight consecutive victories in home series openers. The Orioles have won eight of their past 12 away contests, as Baltimore looks to improve on a 5-3 mark in the previous eight road games against AL West foes.

'Lackey struggles vs Jays'

When Toronto Blue Jays and Boston Red Sox open their series north of the border Monday night, the starters will be coming into the game from opposite ends of the spectrum. Jays' Drew Hutchison (6-8, 4.16 ERA) is off a 5 1/3 inning of 6 hit, 6 run ball in a loss against Tampa and John Lackey (10-6, 3.79 ERA) heads to the hill off a strong 6 innings of 4 hit, 2 run ball in a victory over Houston. Although, Boston has come to life winning 7-of-8 on the diamond betting Red Sox has risk. BoSox have struggled against Toronto of late with Lackey posting a 1-7 mark while Toronto enters 2-0 vs Boston with Hutchison. A few added betting nuggets to keep in mind. Toronto has won 4 straight vs Boston, have won 4 of Hutchison's last 5 starts against a team with a losing record and are 7-0 in Hutchison's last 7 starts during game one of a series.

Hondo

Hondo broke through with his first victory of the second half Sunday night, scoring with the Dodgers to largely offset his loss with the Giants and put the deficit at 1,390 mclains.

Monday night: Mr. Aitch likes the Rays, because there’s always the possibility Wainwright, bless his generous heart, will “pipe” a couple of pitches to Longoria — 10 units on Odorizzi.
