A cruise ship is refusing to let a New York couple re-book a dream summer vacation after their 5-year-old boy was unable to go on the trip because he was diagnosed with cancer.

The parents of Nicolas Colucci say Norwegian Cruise Line is refusing to accommodate them, citing its cancellation policy.

The family-friendly cruise, in partnership with the Nickelodeon channel, was scheduled to start on June 1, but Nicolas got sick on May 19. He was diagnosed with a cancerous tumor in his liver, and had surgery a few days later. He is still undergoing chemotherapy.

The cruise line says any cancellation within 14 days or less of the sail date is subject to a 100 percent cancellation fee. Now, the boy’s family is out $4,000.

“I just never imagined. . . that they would be so heartless, basically.”- Tara Colucci
“They said we should have gotten insurance, traveler’s insurance,” Tara Colucci told “Fox & Friends“ Sunday.

Philip Colucci told the show he couldn’t believe the cruise line’s stance. “I felt that a cruise line that is family-oriented, who caters to families . . . it was a Nickelodeon cruise; I was just astounded,” he said. “I couldn’t believe that they wouldn’t have helped us out.”

Norwegian issued a statement to “Fox & Friends” saying, “Our hearts, thoughts and prayers are with the Colucci family and we wish Nicolas a speedy recover. . . After reviewing the request of the Colucci family, we spoke with the family and explained that while we couldn’t make an exception to our policy, we would assist them when they were ready to re-book their cruise.”

But Tara Colucci said the cruise line did not offer them any guarantees that they would have a spot on a future cruise.

Doctors removed 60 percent of Nicolas’ liver, his gall bladder, part of his diaphragm and lymph nodes. The cancellation was a big disappointment for the boy. He had made a calendar counting down the days until the trip.

“It’s not like our son got the flu or a cold and we couldn’t go,” Tara Colucci told MyFoxNY Thursday. “I just never imagined, especially a company as big as Norwegian, that they would be so heartless, basically.”

After the MyFoxNY story, the CEO of another cruise line called the Coluccis, who live in North Babylon, Long Island. He offered them a free cruise with Nicolas and Nicolas’ younger brother when they are ready.

Tara Colucci told “Fox & Friends” the CEO's offer was amazing. She also said she would advise other parents planning a family cruise to take out traveler’s insurance or maybe choose a different company.

Being diagnosed with a life threatening diseaseis out of aanyone's control & these people should be refunded or rescheduled.......the thing is, they didn't ask for a refund, just a rescheduling of their trip.

I know rules are rules but there has to be some human compassion in situations like this.

The fact the company to this stance will negatively affect their company with bad publicity.

Another company offered this family a free trip & it looks the company will get lots of positive feedback........

In today's society with all the social media, you can act like Norwegian has.......saying, if they don't like it, they can go to another company.

Meant to type, Norwegian "can't " act like they have with today's social media....

The told them they should have bought travel insurance. While the cruise line is probably right, they are getting slammed over this. They are afraid to make an exception because they don't want to have to keep making exceptions but this is a horrible case and they probably should make an exception.

Loved my Norwegian cruise earlier this year. But I won't take them now, there should be exceptions to the rules, and this would be one of them.

I agree the family should get something but NCL is kinda fucked now.

Now imagine another 200 cancellations coming back saying someone has cancer. what do they do?

Now imagine the next headline...."Norwegian cruise wouldn't accommodate us unless they looked at my cancer-stricken son's medical charts and invaded our privacy"

what they should have done was say no but offer some discount on a future cruise....and put a note in the file (not known to the family) so that when they book next time they will have a complimentary cruise while not expecting it. but i imagine the family still make a stink and grab headlines.

Easy free positive press by doing the right thing. They missed a huge opportunity

isnt that exactly what trip insurance is for?

but no, the family thinks their situation (while tragic) is special and they should get free cancellation without buying the insurance, everyone thinks their fucking special

I don't know about you but I don't buy trip insurance ever. This family didn't plan on their kid getting cancer. Now, what you have is a company looking like a bunch of assholes in the press because of their insensitivity to a situation. Which is worse? Just rescheduling a trip for a family or looking like total d-bags in the press?

disagree, doubt it makes the press if they do the right thing. best case would be family spreading their story through WOM and maybe posting it on twitter but that kind of goodwill is going to be a non-story for most publications.

Yep.

I agree it would not have made mainstream news, but these days twitter, facebook and other viral stories maybe more effective (different demographic)
