The A's are putting a huge amount on the line for this year. Very little chance tor retain Lester.... and Cespedes has BIG TIME up-side!

It is pretty hard to like this trade on the surface but perhaps the A's know more about Cespedes than we do? It certainly makes sense for the Sox anyway. They get all of Cespedes' upside and did not give up really anything (in the sense that Lester was a free agent anyway).

A's weren't going to be able to keep Cespedes who has terrible plate discipline (Oakland loves OBP) and refused to play CF. He was gone after next season and the A's are going for it all this year. Beane is just tired of making the playoffs but never having the firepower to match the big boys. I think it's a great deal for the Red Sox since Lester might resign with them anyway, and an okay one for Oakland. No losers here.
