What's wrong with this country when Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is tearing up the box office?

Yeah, unless you like a couple of specific genres, it's tough to find a good movie nowadays.

Seems like almost all movies nowadays fall into category of super hero or fictional/fantasy.

2014 movies (note, this is JUST 2014):

X-men
Captain america
Lego movie
Transformers
Dawn of the planet of the apes
Guardians of the galaxy
Amazing Spiderman
Hunger games
How to train your dragon (although I assume that's a kids movie)
Ninja Turtles
The Hobbit

Evidently, that's what sells. Sucks for me because I don't find these genres remotely interesting. But they must clean up at the box office.

as opposed to what, Into the Storm? haha. there were what, 3 movies that were nationally released, and you're complaining that the one that had the most appeal across the most demos blew the other movies out of the water? jesus.

Is it still in to go into a justincruise thread and get mad at him for no reason?

cmon pal this is the internet, its serious business right?

lets just hope you put that much passion and effort into whatever you do for a living.

A pathetic movie that gets a 19% on rotten tomatoes is making the idiot director millions who knew he was making a bad movie the whole time.

The following movies are all playing in theaters now that are better reviewed than turtles.

A most wanted man (great movie that will make no money)
Guardians of the Galaxy
The hundred foot journey
Lucy
Hercules
Get on Up
Dawn of the planet of the apes
Boyhood

It's kind of like how every new Adam Sandler movie is intentionally terrible yet makes millions. It's disappointing I guess that the general public prefers mindless entertainment to good films. Not saying that all of the above are great movies but you know what I mean.

And a grand total of one of those movies was released this weekend.

Lucy has grossed nearly 100M
Dawn of the apes has grossed near 200M

By your vehement defending of the movie i'm going to assume you are a Michael Bay fan. There is no shame it in, I just think the guy makes horrible movies with zero effort. Those movies make him millions which then fund more horrible mindless movies. It's a cycle that has clearly gotten worse and worse in recent years and it's disappointing to someone who appreciates a good film.

The bad thing is you can not blame Bay at all for this. It is 100% the publics fault.

not everyone cares to go see movies like The Artist in theaters. That movie grossed 144M internationally and won Best Picture. I wouldn't indict the public because it prefers action thrillers when they go to out to see movies vs. going to see the Grand Budapest Hotel.

Nothing about what I'm saying is 'vehement.' I just think you have no point.

You should read Spielberg and Lucas' comments on the future of the movie-going experience as they predict it. You're only going to see more of these types of movies be produced for the big screen according to them.

Did I say people should only see movies like the artist?

I just saw Guardians of the Galaxy and it was a great movie, 92% on tomatoes. A film doesn't have to be artsy to be good and I never said that it does. You are definitely putting words in my mouth with that one.

Bay does a great job at special effects, but more effort could be put in the rest of the film
