KEY STAT: Arsenal have won all 12 of their Champions League qualifying/playoff matches in the last decade

EXPERT VERDICT: The draw looks the value in Istanbul. Arsenal are better than the Feyenoord outfit beaten by Besiktas in both legs of the last round and have a great record in the early stages of this competition. However, the Olympic Stadium is always an intimidating venue and the Gunners struggled for fluency against Crystal Palace on Saturday.

RECOMMENDATION: Draw

KEY STAT: Napoli have won their last four home matches

EXPERT VERDICT: Ander Herrera may not have made the difference for Manchester United on Saturday but could be missed by Athletic Bilbao, who face a tough Champions League playoff round, first leg clash away to Napoli. Athletic are the weakest of the four Spanish qualifiers and may struggle against free-scoring Napoli who were third in Serie A last term.

RECOMMENDATION: Napoli

KEY STAT: Atletico Madrid have lost four Super Cups since they last won it in 1985

EXPERT VERDICT: Atletico Madrid’s squad has a different look to it this season, and it may be worth siding with the more settled Real Madrid for the Super Cup. Carlo Ancelotti’s men were impressive against Seville last week, and could carry a psychological edge over their rivals with the Champions League final fresh in the memory.

RECOMMENDATION: Real Madrid

KEY STAT: Maribor have only lost twice at home in their last ten Champions League qualifiers

EXPERT VERDICT: Maribor have seen off Zrinjski and Maccabi Tel Aviv to progress to this stage, and Celtic look too short to beat them in Slovenia. The Bhoys were hammered by the disqualified Legia Warsaw and have a poor record away from home in Europe, but a draw should be within their reach.

(959) SAN DIEGO PADRES at (960) LOS ANGELES DODGERS

Take: (959) SAN DIEGO PADRES +115

No, I don’t think the San Diego Padres are a legitimate playoff contender. But what I think doesn’t matter. The Padres are seven games out of the wild card with 39 games remaining. That means they’re in the race, and more importantly, the players on the team absolutely believe that have a chance to get to October.

It really doesn’t make much sense, but that’s the beauty of sports. What we “experts” think is supposed to take place simply doesn’t. The Friars are a perfect example. This team just grinds like crazy. If you watch their games, and I catch almost all of them, the team has some real chemistry, and I don’t think there’s any question this is what’s enabling the Padres to play above their collective talents. Make no mistake, on paper this is a team that should already be making vacation plans. But they don’t play the games on paper.

The Dodgers have loads of talent, but they can’t get away from what has been an unending run of injuries and consequently, they’re really not playing particularly good baseball. As a result, a team that was supposed to be a playoff cinch has had to turn to making minor deals just to round out their starting rotation. The Dodgers are still atop the NL West, but I don’t think there’s anyone who is viewing them as a powerhouse based on how they’ve played for the last few weeks.

The Padres have the edge on the hill tonight with Adam Kennedy opposing Kevin Correia. The Dodgers are supposed to have the better offense, but strange as it is, that’s not the way it is right at the moment. The current form chart also gives the bullpen advantage to San Diego, in spite of the fact they moved their closer and should have gotten considerably weaker.

I wouldn’t say there’s any particular value here based on the price. The number on the game is a reflection of how the teams are playing right now and the fact the better pitcher tonight toils for the Padres. Perhaps getting just small plus money with the Friars will turn bettors off, and make the Dodgers as cheap chalk seem enticing. I’d rather side with the little engine that could and I’ll go the Padres way tonight.

Comp MLB Pick for Tuesday, August 19, 2014: 7:05 PM EST

(971) SEATTLE MARINERS VS (972) PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES

Take: (972) Your free pick for Tuesday, August 19th, 2014, comes in baseball as Seattle and the Phillies meet in Philadelphia. A tough situational spot for Seattle, 3,000 miles from home while playing their 4th straight road game. They also lost the DH for this series, and they can't afford to with an offense ranked 19th in runs, 28th in on base percentage and 24th in slugging. The Mariners are 1-6 in Hisashi Iwakumas last 7 starts as a favorite of -110 to -150. The Mariners are also 2-6 in their last 8 interleague road games, 1-6 in their last 7 interleague road games vs. a right-handed starter. They face righty A.J. Burnett, who has thrown well all year and has a 3.36 ERA at home. The last three years Seattle has hit just .161 off him. The Phillies are 6-2 in their last 8 games vs. a starter with a WHIP less than 1.15, so grab the home dog. Play Philadelphia!

Houston Astros vs. New York Yankees

1* Bonus Play on the New York Yankees

The visiting Houston Astros send Brett Olberholtzer (4-8, 3.87 ERA) to the hill, he’s coming off one of his best starts of the season. The southpaw gave up just one run over seven innings in a hard luck loss to the Twins. Still, we know that Oberholtzer is 0-2 with a 4.09 ERA in two career outings against the Yankees heading into his first ever start in the Bronx. Also keep in mind that Oberholtzer is just 1-4 on the road thus far. The Yankees will start Chris Capuano (1-3, 4.13 ERA) who hasn’t had a lot of luck with the Pinstripes this season, but who has had success in the past against Houston, going 7-4 with 3.34 ERA in 12 careers outings against the Astros. The Yankees are trying to hang in a wild-card race in which three teams ahead of them are all at least 10 games above .500. Therefore, this homestand represents a good chance to pile up victories against weaker competition. I think they get it done building off the two wins to end the Tampa series previous. The Astros have taken two of three from the Yankees this year but before that NY had won 13 of 15 in the series. I have no problem laying the extra money on the home team in this match-up.

Cincinnati Reds vs. St. Louis Cardinals

Bonus Play St. Louis Cardinals

It took an extra inning, but the Cardinals were able to pull out an important victory last night in a back and forth game over the Cincinnati Reds. While St. Louis scored a run 5 of the 10 times they came up to bat, Cincinnati did almost all of its scoring in one inning. I look for the Cardinals to have a far easier time Tuesday.

One thing is for sure and that's the Cardinals have owned this NL Central rivalry. They have won 10 of the past 11 series against the Reds, including all three this year. They're well on the way to four. At Busch Stadium is where they've truly had their number. Cincinnati has lost 12 of the last 13 series here and each of the last six.

Perhaps something happed to Reds starter Alfredo Simon over the All Star Break. He had a 15-3 team start record before it (2.70 ERA), but an 0-6 TSR after it (5.46 ERA). He has never started against St. Louis, though he's made 14 relief appearances.

Cincinnati is also 4-13 its last 17 games as an underdog.

St. Louis will send John Lackey out to the mound. This is his fourth start since being traded from Boston and he's done quite well against the two National League opponents he's faced. On August 3rd, he gave up just 2 runs in 7 innings vs. Milwaukee. In his last start, he was able to overcome three walks to again allow just 2 runs in 7 innings. Overall, Lackey has a 3-0 TSR vs. the NL this season. 1* Bonus Play.

Seattle Mariners vs. Philadelphia Phillies

Bonus Play Seattle Mariners

Despite losing yesterday, the Mariners are a hot ball club right now, winning 10 of 13. The M’s are often overlooked in what is the best division in baseball, but this team is for real. They currently sit just below the Tigers for the 2nd Wild Card spot, so it’s extremely important that they beat the teams that they are supposed to, such as the Phillies.

Not many pitchers that aren’t “Ace’s” have been more dominant than Hisashi Iwakuma this season. He’s 3-1 with a 1.27 ERA in his last 4 starts and owns an even better 0.84 ERA in his last 3. Pitching on the road isn’t a factor at all for this guy, as he’s just as effective on the highway compared to at Safeco. Iwakuma has good command and keeps the ball down in the zone, rarely making mistakes around the belt. He will have no trouble shutting down a slumping Phillies lineup.

The season can’t end quickly enough for the Phillies. They’re in the midst of a disastrous year, and will turn to A.J. Burnett to help them through this one. Burnett was one of the pitchers most likely to be dealt before the deadline. Philly missed out on that opportunity, as he’s 0-5 with a 6.54 ERA since the All-Star break. He’s lost his control and his confidence is obviously down. Lay the chalk and take the Mariners.
