Mariners @ Phillies
Recommendation: Mariners -150
Despite losing yesterday, the Mariners are a hot ball clubright now, winning 10 of 13. The M’s are often overlooked in what is the bestdivision in baseball, but this team is for real. They currently sit just belowthe Tigers for the 2[SUP]nd[/SUP] Wild Card spot, so it’s extremely importantthat they beat the teams that they are supposed to, such as the Phillies.
Not many pitchers that aren’t “Ace’s” have been moredominant than Hisashi Iwakuma this season. He’s 3-1 with a 1.27 ERA in his last4 starts and owns an even better 0.84 ERA in his last 3. Pitching on the roadisn’t a factor at all for this guy, as he’s just as effective on the highwaycompared to at Safeco. Iwakuma has good command and keeps the ball down in thezone, rarely making mistakes around the belt. He will have no trouble shuttingdown a slumping Phillies lineup.
The season can’t end quickly enough for the Phillies. They’rein the midst of a disastrous year, and will turn to A.J. Burnett to help themthrough this one. Burnett was one of the pitchers most likely to be dealtbefore the deadline. Philly missed out on that opportunity, as he’s 0-5 with a6.54 ERA since the All-Star break. He’s lost his control and his confidence isobviously down. Lay the chalk and take the Mariners.
