The Cleveland Browns named Brian Hoyer ahead of Johnny Manziel on Wednesday as starting quarterback for Week 1 against Steelers on Sept. 7.

"He was the clear leader from the beginning," head coach Mike Pettine said about the decision. "We've maintained all along that if it was close, I would prefer to go with the more experienced player. Brian has done a great job in the meeting rooms and with his teammates on the practice field and in the locker room."

Neither QB played all that well Monday night against the Redskins. Hoyer started his second straight preseason game but never found a rhythm against Washington, finishing just 2 of 6 for 16 yards and no touchdowns.

Manziel wasn't much better, completing 7 of 16 attempts for 65 yards and a touchdown. Manziel was also caught on camera flashing an obscene gesture toward the Redskins bench during the Browns' 24-23 loss.

"It does not sit well," Pettine said of the gesture Monday night. "It's disappointing, because what we talk about is being poised and being focused. ... That's a big part of all football players, especially the quarterback."

Manziel called the moment a "lapse of judgment."

Manziel's judgment has been called into question many times during his illustrious career at Tech A&M and this offseason after he was selected with the 22nd-overall pick. He has been heavily criticized for posting numerous photos of him partying with fans and celebrities.

The Browns play the Steelers in Week 1 and then the New Orleans Saints and Baltimore Ravens in the second and third game of the season before their bye week. If Cleveland gets off to a slow start, the team could make a change at quarterback during the bye week.

Damn, was really hoping to see him against the Steelers. Well, I'm going to the game in Cleveland also, so, maybe then.

I disagree with the decision.

I believe in throwing your rookie QB of the future into the fire and letting him learn & take his lumps...

Both QBs played awful so far, they probably should have kept the competition open for longer. Ownership/Gm have done a shitty job putting playmakers around the qbs

Connor Shaw is the best QB they have. When finally given the chance, maybe not even by the Browns, it will show...
