MLB Betting News and Notes - Week #25
•Hamilton Likely Ready To Return To Angels Wednesday: Josh Hamilton took batting practice and ran the bases in 100-degree heat at Angel Stadium Monday afternoon, and looked so good manager Mike Scioscia said Hamilton could return to the lineup as soon as Wednesday. Hamilton has been out since Sept. 4 with a sore AC joint in his right shoulder, an injury that had been so slow to heal that Scioscia acknowledged that Hamilton might miss the rest of the season. But that all changed Monday. "Hopefully it was a breakthrough day as far as his health," Scioscia said. "His workout was incredible. He has a couple things he wants to make sure he rebounds from. Hopefully we're in a day-to-day status with him and we'll see how he feels tomorrow." Whenever Hamilton does return, it likely will be as the DH and he won't be in his normal cleanup spot. Second baseman Howie Kendrick has hit cleanup in Hamilton's absence and hit well -- he's hitting .488 (20-for-41) in his last 10 games. Hamilton didn't have a problem with that: "Leave Howie where he's at," Hamilton said.
•Dodgers Uncertain When Ryu Will Return: The Los Angeles Dodgers received good news Monday about left-hander Hyun-Jin Ryu, who underwent an MRI exam that showed no structural damage in his sore left shoulder. However, the team isn't sure when or if he will pitch again before the season ends. Ryu was scheduled to start Wednesday against the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field, but he won't pitch that game. Manager Don Mattingly did not officially name a replacement, but on Sunday in San Francisco, Mattingly said rookie Carlos Frias after a Sunday bullpen session is "working toward" that Wednesday start. Ryu lasted one inning Friday night at San Francisco and allowed four runs.
He won't throw for at least four days after receiving a cortisone injection in his shoulder during an exam Monday in Los Angeles with Dr. Neal ElAttrache. Ryu will rejoin the Dodgers in Chicago, where they start a four-game series Thursday with the Cubs. Mattingly, while not ruling Ryu out for the remainder of the regular season, was happy to hear the results of the pitcher's MRI. "It's good news as far as we're concerned," Mattingly said before the Dodgers beat the Colorado Rockies 11-3. "There's nothing new from any of his original MRIs.... He'll be off for the next couple days and then meet up in Chicago with us and start throwing. Then we'll see where we're at." Ryu went on the disabled list April 28 with left shoulder inflammation and missed three weeks. An MRI on his shoulder then confirmed the initial diagnosis of inflammation.
Ryu did not require a rehab assignment -- something unavailable now with the minor league seasons concluded -- and instead threw a 75-pitch session in extended spring training before returning to the Dodgers. After Wednesday, Ryu's next scheduled start is Sept. 22 against the Giants. Mattingly was non-committal on whether Ryu would pitch that day, neither saying he would be available nor ruling him out. "I don't want to speculate," Mattingly said. "I just want to see where this goes." Time does not appear to be on Ryu's side, since there are just under two weeks left in the regular season. Mattingly sees no point in trying to rush Ryu back into a race he expects will be tight. "I really expect it to come down to the last series of the year, honestly, so I think we'll plan accordingly," Mattingly said. "If we can, we'll get him back."
•Maddon: Technology Key To Young Fans: Tampa Bay Rays manager Joe Maddon maintains technology and not shorter games is key to attracting young fans to baseball. Maddon's comments followed Monday night's 1-0 win over the New York Yankees, a game that lasted 3 hours, 28 minutes - the longest nine-inning, 1-0 game by time in major league history. "I really think that if all we're worried about is length of the game regarding attracting young fans, I think that's probably not the actual specific or most important reason," Maddon said. "It's a media-driven problem, I really believe that. I think to involve youngsters technologically speaking is much more important." Nine-inning games this season are averaging 3:03, according to STATS, up from 2:33 in 1981. "I believe you need to really focus on getting the kids more involved based on what kids are digging these days, and that's technology, their devices," Maddon said.
Maddon thinks Twitter and Skype would be good tools. "I think Skyping and getting kids to connect with players in an organization during the course of a school year primarily could really draw young people to an organization or a bunch of players," Maddon said. "Even one guy per week Skyped a classroom from each team, just think of the impact that would make. I think once a kid has been touched by an athlete, I don't care what sport it's in, he's going to become a fan of that player and that team." Maddon thinks discussions on the matter are needed. "Somebody needs to sit down and really come up with an interactive kind of a situation in the ballpark or at home that engages youngsters, that's what I'm looking at," he said. "Be more creative. Get us in touch with them, get players touching kids more technologically and you're going to get more fans."

--New York Yankees pitcher Masahiro Tanaka is expected to be back on the mound Sunday in a major league game for the first time in more than two months. The Japanese right-hander is scheduled to start against the Toronto Blue Jays in Yankee Stadium as long as he makes it through a bullpen session in preparation. Tanaka has not pitched in a game since July 9 when a partial tear of the ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow surfaced. On Monday, he tested the elbow by throwing 65 pitches in five scoreless innings of an instructional league game, giving up six hits and striking out four.
"He's pitching if he's OK," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said before the Yankees played the Tampa Bay Rays on Tuesday night. "We'll see how he holds up." Girardi indicated that Tanaka will be limited to 70 to 75 pitches against the Blue Jays. Tanaka also could start one more game before the end of the season. The Yankees want to see how the elbow responds and determine whether he will need surgery. Tanaka signed a seven-year, $155 million contract with the Yankees last winter and has a 12-4 record with a 2.51 ERA in 18 starts this season. He got off to a fast start with an 11-1 record and 1.99 ERA in his first 14 outings.
--Miami Marlins slugger Giancarlo Stanton hopes to return before the end of the season after suffering facial injuries when he was hit by a pitch last week. Stanton posted pictures of himself Tuesday on Instagram showing his face after he was hit by the fastball from Milwaukee Brewers starter Mike Fiers and the progress he has made since he was struck on the left side of his mouth last Thursday. "The Aftermath…Making huge progress!! Want to thank everyone who has played a part in my recovery process. Your kind messages, thoughts & prayers have meant the world to me. Pushing forward," he said in a message on Instagram. Stanton was scheduled to meet with doctors on Tuesday to assess his recovery. He suffered facial fractures and dental damage from being hit.
--Houston Astros outfielder George Springer was shut down for the remainder of the season, bringing a premature close to his promising rookie season. Springer was placed on the 15-day disabled list on July 20 with a left quad strain and suffered a setback during a subsequent rehab assignment. Despite rest and rehab, the club opted to keep Springer out. Springer hit .231/.336/.468 with 20 home runs and 51 RBIs in 78 games.
--Cleveland Indians outfielder Ryan Raburn returned to Cleveland on Tuesday to undergo an MRI on his left knee. Raburn suffered a hyperextension at Detroit on September 13th. A decision on his return will be made pending the results of his MRI.
--Yankees infielder-outfielder Martin Prado will miss the remainder of the season after undergoing an appendectomy on Tuesday morning. The 30-year-old Prado, who was placed on the 60-day disabled list, was batting .316 with seven home runs and 16 RBIs in 37 games for the Yankees since he was acquired from the Arizona Diamondbacks at the trade deadline on July 31. To take his spot on the roster, the Yankees signed minor leaguer Jose Pirela to a major league contract. Pirela could become the 57th player to see action this year for the Yankees, which would be a club record.
--When the Atlanta Braves open their new stadium in Cobb County and leave Turner Field behind, the venue will also have a new name: Sun Trust Park. The 25-year naming rights agreement was announced Tuesday morning at a groundbreaking ceremony. The Braves will play at Turner Field in Atlanta until 2016, before the stadium built in 1996 for the Olympics -- the Braves' first season there was 1997 -- shuts its doors. Sun Trust is a bank holding company with more than $170 million in assets.
--Baltimore Orioles first baseman Chris Davis helped rescue accident victims in an overturned truck on a freeway Monday. Davis, who is serving a 25-game suspension for a positive test for amphetamines, came upon an overturned truck on I-295 and waived passers-by over to help him lift the truck off a man who was pinned underneath, according to MASNSports.com. One person was ejected from the vehicle and three others were injured. A 61-year-old man was transported to a hospital with serious injuries that were not life threatening, according to a report.

Bumgarner tossed seven shutout innings and reached 200 strikeouts for the first time in his career in Friday’s 9-0 victory over the Dodgers. “He’s been our lead horse all year, no doubt about it,” Giants pitcher Tim Lincecum told the Los Angeles Times. Jordan Pacheco is 9-for-26 with a home run against Bumgarner, who owns a 6-4 record and 2.68 ERA in 17 career games (16 starts) against Arizona.
