I HarrytheHat started working at Binions Horseshoe Club 1967 as break-in dealer, of which Benny Binion only hired very few break-ins because of big money action for a downtown casino compared with strip . I started as chip runner and a shill in those days just to learn from some best dealers in town. I started with the quarter crap game called in business {The Bird Game}dealing in almost 6 color chips, as we say in business {checks]. Also broke in single deck blackjack [ in those days there were very little 4 deck shoe blackjack games] Well After about 3 years breaking in high action I got job on highway[ called Las Vegas Strip I landed a job as crap dealer at Desert Inn owned by Hughes tool company later called Suma Corp. Owned And Operated by Howard Hugues Worked to a box man, floor-man, pit boss and then shift manager with in 6 years, So Be It. This a brief History Of One Greatest Gambler Casino Owner , where the Midnight Special $1.99 Steak and Eggs View attachment 17122& Highest Las Vegas Limits In A Gambling Hall Was A Legend Like Benny Binion...Benny Binion came to Las Vegas from Texas in the late '40s, when his illegal activities outstripped his ability to get local law enforcement to look the other way. Vegas, which allowed legal gambling, was a perfect fit for Benny, who came from a background of bootlegging and numbers running.
In 1951, after a couple of failed casino ventures, Benny bought the El Dorado club in 1951. He renovated and redesigned the club and gave it a Western theme, naming in the Binion's Horseshoe Casino. Benny made the casino famous by putting a million dollars on display in a glass case in the main room, by carpeting the floors, and by offering the highest limits in town.
The Famous Nick the Greek-Johnny Moss Match

In 1951, Binion's Horseshoe hosted a legendary heads-up poker match between poker legend Johnny Moss and wealthy gambler Nick "the Greek" Dandalos. The match went on for months and millions of dollars passed back and forth. Spectators came from all corners to watch, generating serious business for the casino.
The World Series of Poker Comes to Binion's

In 1970, the World Series of Poker began. Originally conceptualized as a get together for poker greats who would determine among themselves who was the best, the main event Texas hold'em freeze-out, begun in 1971, became the standard way to determine poker's world champion.
The event, which started with just a handful of players, has grown and evolved incredibly over the years to become a massive televised event in the modern era.
The End of Binion's Horseshoe Casino

Benny passed away in 1989, and almost a decade later, his daughter Becky Behnen wrested control of the casino from her brother Jack. This move was unfortunate, as she ran the casino into the ground financially just as it should have been experiencing its highest peak. In 2003, when amateur Chris Moneymaker won millions in the WSOP main event after winning his seat for $40 online, poker and the World Series became huge.
However, the popularity came too late for the Binions to take advantage, as Becky Behnen had already sunk the casino into insoluble debt. Harrah's entertainment charged in and bought the Horseshoe and World Series of Poker brands, bailing out Behnen and making millions for Harrah's in the process. MTR Gaming Group took over the Binions brand and reopened the hotel as Binion's Gambling Hall and Hotel in 2005. Jack Binion sold all Other 2 property's & Gaming River Boat and rights to world series of poker In Tunca Ms. Which He Owned By Himself for 300 Million and Becky sold her downtown Hotel Casino For Next To Nothing. Jack Lives in Horn Lake Mississippi where i go fishing with Him&Friends once year for Croppy and Bass, And We Pan Fry-It Baby!!!!!

I love your old stories,,, but I know for a fact there is some grit in there,,, Tatehill2000 >>>Sheriff Ralph Lamb was a cowboy sheriff in Vegas back then and any thing goes in the downtown clubs. Does that tell you anything. He use has breakfast at Papa Gars Restaurant on Industrial Rd every morning. You could actually wear a side arm weapon those days, no kidding!!! walking down Fremont St. The cowboys ran downtown joints like Sam Boyd[ Vegas Club], Bucky Blane [Golden Nugget Saloon and gaming hall,] Benny Binion,[ Horse shoe club] Wild Bill Jimson of Pioneer club and so on. Gaming commission was controlled by Mormon cowboys back then. Most Strip properties were owned my Mormon's of which Hotels & Casinos paid rent to the Mormons. Most strip hotels and casinos were built on teamster money because banks would not loan money. However, Valley Bank owned my the Mormons in later years did give loans, just ask Steve Wynn when he borrowed money to buy Golden Nugget from Bucky Blane. His 1st Hotel and casino he redesigned in early 70s

Harry,
Your story brings back some memories for me too. I worked @ Binions in the 80's. Hung out @ the back bar after work slugging down the 50 cent Heinekens @ shots of crown royal. I call it my lost decade. Good luck.

The best thing that happened to Jack was when Becky forced him out of the vegas property and her and her husband (who was not allowed in the casino but showed up ) destroyed what was a great casino. she had no clue and her son walked around in a suit looking for cocktail waitresses and lost a lot in poker - I was there when Stupak came in with a ton of $5000 chips and they didn't want to pay him and there was arguing right in the casino - she claimed Jack had them hidden or made more chips and they were trying to scam her - under her ownership Binions became a joke and became a dive - that was one of the downtown places where we played poker and hung out and once a week my friends and I would take over a crap table for about 1 or 2 hours and drink and play 25 and 50 cent craps - what a blast - great fun and we had a great cast of characters - and the coffee shop with delicious prime rib a piece of corn and horseradish sauce was great and comps were easy for us to get but the prime rib was only $3.95 or 4.95 - great memories

I remember the first time I was there 'round about 1996. I stayed in a romm in their old wing, was like $15 bucks
It was the tiniest hotel room I have ever been in. You could tell that this room had been rented to many a solo gambler
in the day, guys who just needed to shit, shave, shower and sleep.

It was connect by door to the next room and the gap at the base was easily enough to fit almost my whole hand under, you could
hear every word. As I was getting ready to hit the town I heard the couple in the next room getting down to business.
OH-Oh -Aw-AW-OOOOOH, well they went at it for a solid 5 minutes and after the dude came, I could tell that they knew someone
was listening to them, hell maybe they saw my shadow as I was on the ground just to get an even better listen:devilex::hidding:

as they became very very quiet as if communicating by gestures and reading lips and they left almost immediately afterwards.

I remember the poker room had the liveliest(only?) 4-8 limit omaha high game that I had ever played.
